The Neighborhood:
The Petworth neighborhood is one with a strong sense of community. Petworth has what is known as a porch culture where residents stroll down streets and shout hello to their neighbors. It’s a community where residents support one another whether it’s borrowing sugar from your next-door neighbor or attending the free Petworth Jazz Project or the Celebrate Petworth Festival an event where it’s difficult to tell if the residents are neighbors or family.
Petworth Community Market is a popular social hub. Each Saturday from May to November, residents gather to support local farmers and artisans while stocking up on weekly groceries. Live music is played while neighbors visit, eat, and shop.
Just as recently as a decade ago it was uncommon to see a mother pushing a stroller. However, Petworth now is what can be considered a stroller city. The number of young professionals and families moving to Petworth has exceedingly increased over the past few years. Even more common now is the stroller-dog combination.
Another delightful feature of Petworth is what is referred to as “the block.” The block, located on Upshur Street between 8th Street SW and 9th Street NW, is a lively section of the neighborhood that includes eccentric furniture shops and vintage clothing boutiques along with Latin and Japanese inspired restaurants.
The large variety of ethnic restaurants in the neighborhood is unsurpassed. French, Ethiopian, Scandanavian, Korean, Italian, Indian, and numerous other cultures are represented in eateries throughout Petworth. Along with the diverse dining options, the diversity in residents comes in at the number three spot for the most diverse DC neighborhoods.
Getting Around:
The Georgia Ave- Petworth METRO subway station is a 6 minute walk from the house, on the GREEN/YELLOW lines.
There are two bikeshare locations in close proximity, one is located on the corner of Upshur St and Illinois Ave (2 min walk), and the second one is located on the corner of Upshur St. and 9th St (7 min walk).

This is a charming, well-appointed house in a decent location, BUT we had a few key problems, one of them being a non-responsive host once we brought up an important flaw with one of the beds… the support slats had been broken — and the poor attempt to fix it (which was obvious when we moved the mattress to see what was going on down there) didn’t resolve its instability (or the inability for someone to sleep on it.) Big strike. TBH, our concerns began well before then. We had indicated at booking that we were coming to DC to connect over the holidays with family members who live there. We weren’t planning a party or having overnight guests but would it be okay if our local people dropped by while we were staying there. No, we were told, it wouldn’t be comfortable for more than 7 people. (This house has a large living room w/a full finished basement… Fine ?.) Then, less than a week before our arrival date, we get notification that we need to sign a 3-page rental agreement. Are these the same ‘house rules’ that appear on the VRBO website? Nope. Lots more rules — and threats of immediate eviction if we break them. Oh, and notice that amenities (like wifi) are not guaranteed. Guess what… we had no wifi for the duration of our stay. The network we were supposed to have access to didn’t even appear as an option. Rebooted box 2x, even logged directly onto the router via username-pw on box. Wi-Fi connection worked then, but no internet. 1 response to reboot box. Then silence.
Very comfortable house for us to stay to be close to family for thanksgiving. The kitchen was large and lovely but was short on essential cooking items. It was great to have two off street parking spots in the back, but the keys we were given didn’t seem to include a key for the backdoor which meant we had to walk around to the front door after parking. We often parked on the street at night because it was easier and it did not feel unsafe.
My family of adults and older teenagers stayed here while sightseeing in DC. The house is beautifully remodeled and exceptionally clean. There was plenty of room for everyone to sleep and spend time together. Its located in a very quiet neighborhood with great parking for 2 vehicles. Any question I had was answered very quickly.
