The Neighborhood:
Middelburgsestraat 44 is in Koudekerke on Walcheren, between Middelburg and Vlissingen. Dishoek beach is about 2.5 km away, with high dunes and a wide sandy beach. Walk by the waterline here or take the bike over the dune path towards Zoutelande and Westkapelle; the bunkers at Zoutelande and the lighthouse at Westkapelle are 6 and 10 km away. For city time, head to Middelburg at 4 km with the Abbey and shops, or to the boulevard in Vlissingen at 5 km where you can watch the ships pass by. Veere is 10 km away on the Veerse Meer for sailing and SUP. You’ll find nature a little further north: De Manteling with Kasteel Westhove and the Terra Maris museum near Oostkapelle is about 12 km, and the Oranjezon nature reserve about 13 km. After a day out, it’s nice to sit outside on the small terrace.
Other Things to Note:
For sea and dunes, head via Dishoek to Strandpaviljoen Kaapduin. Go early for peace and quiet or choose a drink around sunset, then take the path over the dunes towards Zoutelande.
Plan an afternoon in Middelburg: see the tapestries in the Zeeuws Museum in the Abbey, then settle in at De Drvkkery for coffee with a Zeeuwse bolus. On Thursdays there’s a market on the Markt and at the end of August the Zeeland Nazomerfestival brings the Abbey to life.
In Vlissingen, visit the Zeeuws Maritiem muZEEum, then walk along Boulevard Evertsen to beach pavilion Pier 7 for views of the passing ships.
