History of the Powledge House-
In 1844, Gideon Powledge moved to East Alabama from Georgia to receive title to his land on the west side of Chewacla Creek in what is now Lee County, Alabama. A Methodist Preacher, Powledge cleared the lands, set up a blacksmith shop and preached in the Methodist churches in the area. He is also credited with constructing a grist mill on the creek south of his home and later a cotton gin. In 1851 he built this federal-style historic home.
The design of the Powledge House is unique since it did not have a wide central hall as did many southern homes of the period. The style of this house could have been found in the Tidewater Virginia or the Carolinas as early as the time of the Revolutionary War or before. There are few such examples remaining today.
The story and half house originally had six rooms - four downstairs and two upstairs. The house has two unusual front windows, each section with nine panes and each window with glass sidelights. The two front doors are framed by sidelights and an overhead glass transom. The two front doors open into two large rooms which were originally multi-purposed rooms (parlors, bedrooms and eating areas). The two smaller rooms behind them were connected by a covered porch area. These smaller rooms have been restored as a kitchen and master bath. The porch area has been enclosed to provide a dining area. The original kitchen was away from the house, connected by a breezeway.
The back stairs lead to the upstairs sleeping area which was used by the children. One of the upstairs rooms has been converted to a bathroom and dressing room.
The fireplace mantel in the parlor on the right side of the house is of significant note because of its elaborate design. Perhaps Rev. Powledge felt that a man of his importance in the community needed to have a parlor that reflected his position.
The Powledge House is recognized by the Alabama Historical Commission as a Historic Landmark.

We had 10 family members from NY spend Thanksgiving weekend including the Iron Bowl game. Not one single complaint about this home and our terrific hosts. The house had everything provided as advertised and then some. We all would stay here again if the need arises. Thank you so much for this wonderful experience. WAR EAGLE- Nick
We absolutely loved staying at your property this past weekend. It is such a lovely home with so much character. And you go over and beyond to provide the guests with a fully stocked home and comfortable beds and furniture. We will absolutely keep you in mind if we need to rent a place in Auburn in the future.
Such a peaceful place to relax. Our family enjoyed our stay and look forward to coming back. We were able to have our cornhole tournament, enjoy eachother and relax in this beautiful historic home. Thank you for a wonderful stay!
Quiet area close to Auburn University. Nice inside and outside. We will definitely rent again. Good for families! We have six kids ranging from newborn to 10. Property manager was very responsive. Comfortable beds!
We spent the weekend at this amazing property with my mom and my young kids while in town visiting my sister at Auburn. It was also 15-20 min away from campus making it a wonderful getaway location!
This was the perfect place to land on a busy graduation weekend. It is close to town, yet quiet and secluded. We enjoyed morning coffee on the deck and cool evenings on the screened porch. The house was nicely sized for 3 couples. Thank you for hosting us!
My husband and I hosted our wedding reception here at the Powledge house. We had 50 guests, and it was PERFECT! The house was so warm and welcoming, and all of our guests were commenting on how great it looked. The yard was the perfect size for tents/tables to be set up and enjoyed. The details all around the house are so cute, from the flowers, to the interior decor. I enjoyed every single moment! It was a great memory that we will cherish forever. I would HIGHLY recommend the Powledge house and we hope to stay here again for many more years to come.
Our family stayed her for our daughters graduation. It was perfect...close enough to campus but still far enough away to get some peace and quite, which was so nice during such a busy weekend. We hosted brunch for our daughter and a few of her friends before graduation and there is plenty of room. Loved the at home feeling of the home. Lots of room to spread out. Owner was always helpful and quick with answers for any questions. Just wished we had discovered before graduation. When we come back we will definitely stay again. Our daughters and her friends loved it so much I see them renting in the future for many happy years of returns to their alma mater.
Enjoyed our stay in this house. Plenty of space for our family, with an updated kitchen and bathrooms. Only 10 minute drive to downtown Auburn or the university. Quiet location and a beautiful screened porch to sit and watch the hummingbirds at the feeder.
We met our kids and grandkids here for a week, we had a fabulous time! Powledge House is quiet, beautifully decorated, cozy and comfortable! We had a “goodie” sack awaiting us, stocked coffee bar, and new coloring/sticker books with new crayons and colored pencils for the kids! Accommodations were perfect for our family. Beautiful gardens, pond, and new deck. House is professionally decorated. Amy is great to work with and responded to all my questions. Wish we could’ve stayed longer, but we will be back! Thank you Amy!
