"The Stone House at Treetops" is situated on several acres 1/2 mile up a country road above Newfound Lake. This beautiful property is perfect for a family vacation or a romantic get-away or for those with a yen for history. Thomas A. Watson, the co-inventor of the telephone, made it a summer residence as did Milton C. Winternitz, a renowned dean of Yale Medical School. John Cheever, the gifted novelist and short story writer, was a frequent visitor.
Designed by a prominent architect in the early twentieth century, the house has a spacious living room graced a large granite fireplace. Off the living room is an outdoor patio for relaxing with tables and chairs. The house has three bedrooms, one on the first floor with a double bed. There is a first floor bathroom with a shower. Two bedrooms are on the second floor, one with a queen bed and one with twin beds. A bathroom with tub is between the bedrooms. A new washer and dryer are in the basement. (Please note, the railing on the staircase does have large spaces, so good to monitor if you have small children.) You also have access to a beach on the lake, with spectacular views, a quaint boathouse and a swim raft.
The house is still owned by the descendants of the inventor, the dean and the novelist. Mr. Watson and Dean Winternitz collaborated on the painstaking construction of the house. Great hand-drilled granite blocks can be seen in the basement and handcrafted wood paneling throughout. A very clunky telephone from Mr. Watson’s time can be seen on the wall of the downstairs bedroom. If you are looking for an historic spot to make a quiet retreat away from the busy world and a beach on the best part of Newfound Lake, THIS place is for you. Your children will love it also. It's a real gem!
We love going to the Stone house to get away from everything for awhile.....thanks for another great stay!
Both the house and. the area are lovely, and renewing. Wonderful walking trails nearby, pristine lake with loons and long sandy state beach. Very comfortable home, easily held two couples for part of the time. Jana was very helpful with all our questions.
This was our third time at the Stone house and we love it there. Our time is always enjoyable and relaxing, and we can't wait to go back again!
We had a great 2nd visit to Stone House. The house has so much character, and it comes with a nice boathouse and deck providing lake access.
Delightful, secluded family vacation spot with old time charm perched on the hill. Perfect for those seeking privacy and quiet. Lakefront boathouse with beach, deck & water toys complete the package. Very responsive hostess.
We had a wonderful time once again at this old stone house!
The Stone House is the nicest holiday rental we have stayed in in any country. The house is beautiful, with gorgeous panelling, lovely furniture and comfortable beds - a perfect, peaceful place to relax and read and cook. It is also very clean. Its bit of beach and boat house a short drive down the road are wonderful. We were very happy to be able to give our children tbe kind of vacation we had as children: lots of swimming, reading, playing board games and peace. The place feels as if it hasn't changed in decades in the very best way. A rare, charmed place. The owners are delightful, communicative and we are very grateful to them.
Staying at the Stone Cottage is like stepping back in time.....the history here is incredible. Also, Newfound Lake is incredible. Extremely clean and peaceful.
We had a wonderful time and enjoyed our stay at this beautiful, old stone house. It was the perfect family get away for us and we loved the area. Can't wait to go back!!
There were too many insects crawling around for my liking and the floors were not clean. When the children played on them, their legs were black with dirt. The distance between the rails on the steps made me nervous with children under 5.
