The Stewart House is a large, beautiful 18 th century home in located the heart of the historic
district of Cambridge on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. It is the perfect setting for a gathering of
family and friends. The Stewart House is named for the Honorable James Augustus Stewart
(1808-1879) who bought the house in 1848 and expanded it from the original home built in the
late 1700’s by the William Murray family. Stewart was an important lawyer, politician,
businessman, shipbuilder and judge. He served in the Maryland House of Delegates from 1843-
1845 and was elected as a Democrat to the U.S. Congress, serving from 1855-1861. He was
married to Rebecca Sophia Eccleston and had 10 children. The house is one of the most
important examples of Victorian architecture on the Eastern Shore of Maryland.
The home has been lovingly restored and furnished by the current owners. It boasts 8 beautifully
appointed bedrooms (2 king, 5 queen and 1 double twin rooms) and 5 1/2 baths, formal dining
