A spacious Craftsman farm house, the historic Churchill Residence is located in the east end of the Ojai Valley, a half block from Thacher School and the Krishnamurti Foundation. Originally part of the historic Pierpont property, the 3,600 sq. ft. house was designed and built in 1905 for Civil War veteran General Charles G. Penney. The second owner of the house was Dr. Guido Ferrando who along with Aldous Huxley, and J. Krishnamurti founded the Besant Hill School (formerly Happy Valley School). The residence has been owned by the Churchill family since 1957.
A short drive from Ojai Town Center, the residence is set back one-tenth of a mile from Thacher Road. Amid orange and avocado orchards, the location is private and serene. Landscaped grounds compliment mountain and valley views from verandas on the front and back of the house.
A peaceful, rural retreat: The Churchill Residence is popular for groups of friends, writers, artists and Thacher School families. It's secluded and peaceful, a great place to have a family reunion, catch up with friends, read, think, create. There are many cultural events in Ojai throughout the year. Don't miss the Sunday Farmer's market and Bart's Books.
We escaped the midwestern winter and stayed here for 2 months. Our hosts, Alan and Joan, are welcoming, helpful and attentive and I cannot say enough about how easy they made our stay. The house is a special place. The property and views are amazing, the house itself is warm and welcoming. Plenty of room inside and out. We very much look forward to returning!
I highly recommend this property. The house and grounds are five star and worth a trip to Ojai. There are plenty of choices for hiking, swimming, relaxing, and eating - you will never want to leave.
Everything about our stay was perfect! The house has an extraordinary sense of place with a rich history. It has exceptional views, spacious and comfortable rooms, and wonderful artifacts of history (books, photographs, maps) that reinforce the feeling that this has been a happy retreat for over 100 years. The two large porches are wonderful places to watch the sunset over the mountains. The house easily accommodates 10 people -- with plenty of room to be together or to find separate, quiet reading nooks. The beds are comfortable, the kitchen is well appointed, the pool is clean and refreshing, and the house has all modern requirements: internet, smart tv, washer/dryer, dishwasher, AC. The owner and property manager are respectful of your privacy but accessible if you need them. Everyone in our party -- from age 26 to 91--was delighted to be here, and we hope to return again.
This is one of the best VRBO houses I've had the pleasure of visiting. My 3 sisters, our husbands, and my parents celebrated my mom's birthday. We each had our own room with very comfortable beds and linens. The home has plenty of seating and gathering areas, and the pool was clean. We hope to make this an annual trip, and look forward to returning. Joan and Julie were a pleasure to work with. thank you so much from the Espinas, Dickinsons, Mortensens, and Danzigs!
Such a lovely property. Can't wait for an occasion to return. Quiet and peaceful. And house so comfortable. Great communication with property manager.
This house and property is truly a gem. Check-in and communicating with the host and house manager was seamless. The house is lovely with plenty of room for a larger group. The gardens and pool surrounding the house (and the incredible views) made for the most magical trip! We can't wait to come back!
We just finished a girls weekend here and absolutely loved this house. It was the perfect hideaway to spend relaxing time with friends. Thank you so much!
This is a spectacular property surrounded by beautiful gardens and flowers and gorgeous mountain views. Plus so many porches and places to view the gardens and mountains from. A perfect place for a family or friend reunion. Plenty of indoor space for chatting and playing games as well as lovely bedrooms and bathrooms. And finally, croquet!! And very near the town of Ojai with great coffee shops, restaurants and shopping. The whole family from age 14 to 85 was enchanted. We are already planning a return visit.
The house, the porch, the gardens, and the pool were perfect for our family, and the setting could not be more spectacular. Especially the orange blossoms.
Our family has rented several homes in California over the past 7 years and this house was the resounding favorite of everyone! Incredibly scenic with a great hot tub and pool. We cooked several meals at the house and ate on the porch with views of the mountains. The bedrooms were all spacious with comfortable beds and great linens. The gardens and orchards of oranges and avocados surrounding the house were a nice feature for New Englanders. Joan and Julie were very helpful planning hikes and meals in the surrounding area.
