The home was originally built by beloved professor emeritus Dr. Steven Shrader, known for founding the Sewanee Orchestra.
We’ve named our home “Back on Tennessee Cottage,” bringing to mind Alumni returning to the Domain, our Tennessee roots, and capturing the location just off University Avenue. Given this is our family’s second home, we ask that guests help preserve the like new condition and we insist on no smoking or pets.

Stayed Nov 12, 2025All I can say is that as soon as we walked in it was like walking into my home. Everything was clean. It felt very welcoming. Making memories as my son got married in Sewanee and having friends staying with us and catching up was very pleasant. Thank you for hosting us and we will be back back for sure. Very accomidating to eveyrhing. Absolutely beautiful.

Stayed Jun 26, 2025We enjoyed our stay. There was some renovation outside (painting) taking place so out back we could not enjoy but over all great house. There is not a full bath downstairs with bedroom/ only a half bath which could be a problem for someone who can’t do steps. I missed that in the description even if it was clear.

Stayed Jul 2, 2025It’s a stunning house in a great central location on campus! Everything is new and updated bedroom and bathroom wise which makes for a very comfortable space. We were warned about the construction work outside the house the day before we arrived. It was slightly more intrusive than we imagined, as they had to paint the doors inside the house while we were getting ready for dinner. Otherwise, they were gone the day of the actual 4th - the house is beautiful and we loved the nice bedrooms and living space — thanks so much!

Stayed Jun 7, 2024..., Very convenient to campus (especially School of Theology). We had a very minor issue that was immediatly rectified by the host--very responsive. Thanks! It was perfect for our weekend stay for a reunion among friends.

Stayed May 23, 2024We had a great stay at this home. Very spacious & very well appointed. Right in the heart of campus so it was perfect for the wedding weekend we were attending. Unlike a lot of homes in Sewanee that are rough and outdated, this home is nice and very updated. Covered parking as well. Next trip to the Mountain we'll certainly try to rent this home again.
