Everything was great except for checkin. We were told that the key would be on the table when we arrived, but it wasn’t, so we were locked out. The office was closed for the day, and the after hours manager didn’t answer when we called. I left a message for him to call me ASAP because it was very chilly outside, the last ferry had already run for the night, and we were locked out. When he didn’t call back after twenty minutes, I called again, and this time he answered. When he realized we were locked out, he came out within fifteen minutes with the key, but it was honestly a little freaky not knowing what we would do if we couldn’t get a hold of someone. The place was fabulous, extremely clean, great location, but the coffee pot needs to be replaced. It took forty-five minutes to brew 6 cups every morning! Also, the TV instructions did not work, so we ended up using our laptop to watch something at night. We really loved our stay and overall the experience was awesome, other than the checkin issues. If you are looking for a wonderful getaway, you can’t go wrong with Evelyn’s Place. We will definitely go back!
We loved the location and the natural beauty. The beach was so close and it was lovely to enjoy the sunrise and hear the waves. It was our favorite thing to do. Wish we had more time. We even had some wildlife, red squirrels, birds, and a black bear right outside the cabin one morning which got startled when we returned from the beach. The decor was so nice and homey, just right for a cozy long weekend getaway. Books, games, binoculars. Everything worked as it was supposed to, though we had a little trouble regulating the baseboard heat to our comfort level which may be cooler than others. Those warmish fall days! Could have used a place to hang jackets by the door or on the porch. We didn't use the wood stove. It just wasn't cold enough, but it was there tempting us! We also didn't have a fire outside, though there was a nice fire spot with seating. We weren't sure if it was safe to burn with the wind and the lack of rain in the area. The kitchen was really well provisioned with plenty of cooking and utensils, cookware, and dishes. There were nice cupboards for our groceries. We knew there wasn't a dishwasher, but one item I couldn't find was a drying rack. Maybe a small foldable wooden one wouldn't take up much space but still be handy. Bedrooms were a really nice size. I liked that not too much was squeezed in a room for some ease of movement. The bedding was just right. There was a firm bed and a very firm bed. Really appreciated the ceiling fans and regular fans as well as the night lights and little lanterns in case of emergency. The bathroom was very clean and the towels were fresh and nice. The shower curtain was a little low and I caught myself stepping on the excess, but I'm sure that is easily fixed. Good water pressure and hot water. The enclosed porch was lovely. If it was summer we would have been out there so much. Overall, I would highly recommend Esther's place.
This place was truly amazing. We drank coffee and read in the reading room and played cards at the kitchen table. The views were amazing morning, day and night. We even braved running into the lake! It was close enough that my friend and I ran into town while the husbands drove. We ate all our meals in town though the kitchen was prepared to cook there. We bikes to the state park. Great location We would 100% go back.
If you are looking for a quiet place to be alone, unplugged from the busy world, then this is your place! Even though there is internet available, you find yourself enjoying the serene private beach and forgetting about the rest of the world. We did not take advantage of the island's hiking/biking trails, but did enjoy the other aspects of the island. The only thing I missed was a washer/dryer. There is a laundromat in town. Cable TV was available, but we did not take advantage of it because of a lack of signal. We also did not care enough to watch TV to bother calling the owners, who would have gladly helped us figure out the cable. We were able to watch a movie on our phone and tablet if we wanted. I would recommend you stock up on groceries at the IGA in Bayfield, or the WalMart in Ashland prior to arrival, as the island grocery does not have a large selection. My husband is ready to go back. Since we have been home, he has missed the lake lapping against the shore.
I hesitate to give this property a glowing review because I don’t want to have trouble booking it next time when everyone else is doing the same thing!!! This property was AMAZING!!! The only thing that could’ve made this stay outstanding would’ve been for the rain to have held off but I won’t knock the property for that. This cabin is the first place that I have ever said that I would like to do yearly.
