Homer, Alaska
A beautiful, hand crafted log cabin, fully outfitted, next to an Alaskan historic site of rich significance & space. Can accomodate large groups (4 bedrooms and loft) or small. Each log in this cabin was carefully downed, limbed, crafted, notched, and fitted by a long time homesteader, Atz Kilcher. Sitting above stunning scenery, the cabin provides modern amenities in a rustic setting. A mix of antique furniture with modern and log style furniture in the kitchen, living room and downstairs bedrooms. Bamboo kitchen flooring is a treat and the cabin has been lovingly maintained (new downstairs shower, new laundry & high end machines, new tiling and carpeting throughout). We have provided a wood stove with a custom built rock hearth for ambience, but has upstairs and downstairs oil heat for convenience.
The large master bedroom overlooks a view you will never forget (think Kachemak Bay, glaciers, mountains, pink and purple sunsets and, admittedly more rarely, the aurora borealis), and there is a small bedroom right next door if you have a youngster you prefer to keep close, and two window nooks that even adults sleep in. The older kids or adult guests will enjoy the two bedrooms on the lowest level. Sited on a 50 acre parcel next to a homestead where eight children of an early State Senator and writer grew up in an austere 400 square foot homesteaders cabin.
Easy access to the Kilcher Family Homestead provides over 600 acres to hike in if you desire along with access to the beach via one of only two beach access sites outside of Homer on the near side of McNeil Canyon. During the summer the Kilcher Homestead Living Museum offers tours of the Homestead cabin built by Ruth and Yule as well as self guided tours/hike to the beach (donation/contribution varies). There is a meadow/pasture above the house that is fun to explore. There are also meadows, and other interesting land features surrounding the cabin. It is not unusual to see moose, black bear (shy ones), porcupines, sandhill cranes, eagles, hawks, song birds, marmots, seals and other wild life on the Kilcher Homestead.

The cabin was beautiful. It has $1 million dollar views of Kachemak Bay! We were there for a super moon and it was fabulous! Catkin and her husband Tom were super hosts - very responsive to text messages and phone calls. They stopped by a couple of times to check on us. The walk back up from the beach is no joke! Be prepared! But it's worth it.
We had a friend up from the lower 48 and wanted to give him the Alaskan experience, this property did not disappoint! We had a beautiful view of the mountains, glaciers and the ocean. The property was just what we were looking for
Beautiful house, and setting make you feel you are on top of the world. Stairs in the house take a little negotiating with Suitcases but just need to take it quietly. The farm and the history are outstanding and wildlife everywhere. Highly recommended. Thanks Catkin.
The property was in a great location and was large enough for our entire group. Catkin was a wonderful host and answered all of our questions and had great suggestions.
This property is just breathtaking, comfy beds, great kitchen for cooking, covered deck area was lovely for morning coffee. Catkin is an amazing host and is very accessible and accommodating! The history of this family and homestead is amazing! It’s close enough to town and The Spit but feels like you in in the middle of nowhere!
This property was fantastic. Beds were cozy and the house had everything we needed for our 4 day stay in Homer. The host Catkin checked in multiple times in person or by phone/text to make sure all was going well and even gave my 85 year old mother a ride on her 4 wheeler around the area. We had daily wildlife visits from porcupine, moose, and sandhill cranes. The walk down to the beach is longer than you might expect but worth it. The view across the bay to Kachemak Bay State Park is amazing.
Wonderful property and host. Great place for family get togethers with ample room for everyone.
We loved our time here and our tour of the Homestead. Would highly recommend.
Thank you for the great stay! It was wonderful!
Beautiful house and view! Had everything we needed and was so inviting and comfortable. Mama moose and baby were in yard every day, love this place!
Property was beautiful
Log cabin at its best. Can’t beat the view from this perfect location. So much to enjoy in Homer
A beautiful property with an amazing view. Kitchen was well stocked with everything we needed for our meals. Cabin was clean and comfortable. We enjoyed our stay while here.
This property includes a beautiful log cabin perfectly situated high on a hillside with a spectacular view of the wilderness area across Kachemak Bay. The scene is simply stunning. It’s hard to take your eyes off of it. The cabin is beautifully built, well furnished, clean, and very, very comfortable. Cabin highlights for us: (1) After each full day of outdoor activity in the greater Homer area, we gathered for dinner, relaxation, and conversation in the open-concept main floor, which boasts a large, well equipped, functional kitchen, large dinner table and chairs, super-comfy sofas, lounge seat and ottoman, and big windows to enjoy the spectacular view. We didn’t use the wood stove, which would be cozy on cool nights. (2) A great sleep in comfortable beds and linens. The spacious master bedroom with a king bed includes a massive, full-wall window facing Kachemak Bay. (3) Charging up with coffee and tea each morning before breakfast outside on the covered deck while gazing across Kachemak Bay. Catkin, our host, was wonderful. Communication with her was easy and prompt and she was sensitive to our needs for an enjoyable stay. Indeed - we had a great 4-day stay!
Wonderful stay and location. Property is something special. Great host.
Location, location, location! Homer is an incredible place to visit in Alaska and learning about the Kilcher family from the area was an added bonus!
Ideal spot overlooking Homer spit and surrounding waters, with a glacier that adds a nice compliment to the picture…nice accommodations with a note of family history that explains how this beautiful log home was built…very nice
We had a great stay! Cabin was clean and beautiful. The views from these properties are breathtaking! Only regret is that we couldn’t stay longer.
This is our 3rd time renting from this owner. We stayed in the bigger home (Eagle’s Rest) this time and as always you cannot beat the views and the coziness. The owner is friendly, communicative and we feel so fortunate that she shares her homes in this way for all to enjoy. Once again we did not want to leave. Can’t recommend enough!!
Great for our family of 6. There are 3 levels so the grandparents got to sleep up in the gorgeous master and kids downstairs in the bunk room. Plenty of space to gather. Our favorite part was the walk down to the beach.
The property and scenery are outstanding. Clean, comfortable, and convenient to Homer summarize this property.
Beautiful spacious log home w amazing view. We loved our stay and hated to leave. Everything was perfect!
What an amazing place! We were so happy with this house, the owner, the location, THE MATTRESSES!!! When I think of an Alaskan home, this is what I think of. We had relaxing down time and when we wanted, we were a quick car ride to Homer. The owner was so kind and welcoming. She had great suggestions - take her up on the hike to the beach (it’s a good one!)
