Placida, Florida
Summary:
Our Caribbean-inspired home sits directly on the beach for the perfect Little Gasparilla vacation! It features high ceilings, hardwood floors, two screened porches and an ideal beachfront location. From the restful handmade hammocks to our tropical tiki hut surrounded by sea grapes, coconut palms and beach plums, Coconut Hideaway has been created to offer the ultimate island experience. The home offers a variety of sleeping options with two king beds, a queen, a twin and two small daybeds suitable for toddlers.
The Space:
Please note that Little Gasparilla Island is a barrier island accessible only by boat; we provide water taxi information when you book. You cannot drive your vehicle to the island; you park at the marina on the mainland where you catch the water taxi. There are no stores, bars or restaurants on Little Gasparilla which means it has retained much of its "old Florida" ambiance and pristine beauty. For years Little Gasparilla was visited only by locals who would come on weekends to fish, go to the beach and enjoy the privacy, peace and quiet. Now, even though it has been discovered, the lack of a bridge and commercial establishments means that the island appeals to those who want to get away from crowds, tourists, traffic and technology.
Coconut Hideaway is full of souvenirs from travels abroad and antiques that the owners have collected over the years. It was designed in the Caribbean style to best capture the cooling breezes from the Gulf of Mexico, with soaring 17-ft. ceilings and broad overhangs to keep the house cooler. There are comfortable handmade hammocks to relax in, a piano, and the house is fully stocked with everything you need for a fabulous beach vacation....games and puzzles, beach towels and sunscreen, crock pot and ice cream maker. The owners offer a variety of kayaks and a paddle board for your use; a waiver is required for their use. Just bring your groceries, your flip flops and a tropical attitude!
The kitchen is a galley-style kitchen with microwave, toaster oven, dishwasher, large well-stocked pantry, toaster, coffee grinder, Keurig coffee maker (plus a regular drip coffee maker), blender, electric fry pan, crock pot and a full complement of cookware. The refrigerator offers an ice maker and there is also a second refrigerator on the back porch for extra drinks.
The front porch offers dramatic views of Little Gasparilla's beautiful beach and offers the perfect spot for outdoor dining...it also has a comfortable hammock, chaise lounges and is everyone's favorite spot for relaxing and enjoying gulf breezes. The back porch has a comfortable seating area overlooking the tropical garden below.
The master bedroom is on the main floor, adjacent to the main bathroom. It features a king bed plus a small daybed suitable for a toddler. The washer/dryer is in the master bedroom walk-in closet plus an iron and small ironing board. The upstairs "loft" bedroom also has a king bed and another daybed. A small enclosed room on the back porch has an additional twin and a window AC unit. This is a very small room, best suited for one person. Downstairs, on the ground level is an additional guest room called "The Cabana". It offers a queen bed, small sink and mini-fridge, its own TV and sliding doors that open to the tiki hut. It has a window AC unit and a separate downstairs entrance.
The house features a tropical garden with frangipani, hibiscus, and papaya. If the papayas are ripe, you are welcome to help yourself! The garden was badly damaged by Hurricane Ian and the yard is now more open. On the plus side, it is now a sunnier garden and the hibiscus already appreciate the added sun!)
NOTE: The island is accessible by water taxi or private boat only. We have a dock slip if you choose to rent a boat. Boat size is limited at this dock to boats under 24 ft. We also offer beach chairs and an umbrella, a selection of sand toys and we have an island concierge who can meet you at the dock and help transport luggage and groceries to the house for you.
If you are looking for sleek, modern or updated, this home is probably not for you. The kitchen cabinets come from a c.1900’s pharmacy, the TV stand is a 19th century wrapping table, most of the cupboards date to the 1800s, and much of the furniture in the home is over 100 years old. If you are comfortable with the warmth and patina of much-loved antiques, you will feel at home here.
Wifi- complimentary with no data limitations; keep in mind this is not the wi-fi you may be used to on the mainland but it is just about the best available on the island.
Pet Policy - pet-friendly with $100 non-refundable fee per pet; some breeds may be excluded due to insurance restrictions.
Cleaning Fee - minimum $350 cleaning fee
Minimum Renter Age - 25
Boat Slip - included on dock number 51 with maximum boat length 24 feet (this is also where the water taxi drops you off). If you bring or rent a boat, a placard is provided in the house that must be displayed in your boat. Please make sure you have sufficient ropes.
Damage Protection - The $59 charge listed on your quote covers your purchase of $2500 of “all risk” damage protection coverage on your rental property. This protection is purchased in lieu of a cash damage deposit. Coverage details are spelled out in your contract.
Complimentary concierge- will meet you at the dock with a golf cart to assist with transporting your luggage and groceries to the home
Satellite TV - yes
Grill Type - electric, gas
Coffee- drip (filters provided) and Keurig
Parking - $8/night ($10/night if you have a boat trailer) at Eldred's Marina where you meet the boat taxi
Guest Access:
The entire house is yours to enjoy. There is also space to dock a boat or jet ski if you wish to rent one during your stay. (Boats may not exceed 24 ft in length including motor.)
The Neighborhood:
The island is peaceful, tropical, tranquil and secluded. While it is just a short boat ride away from the mainland, it is miles apart in attitude. The island is old Florida at its best....before high rises and seawalls and tourists and theme parks became the norm. Fishing is superb off the beach or the dock and the water is usually calm and clear....you can swim with dolphins and manatees right in our front yard. Leave your car and your cares at the marina because Little Gasparilla is accessible only by water taxi! That means our beaches are uncrowded and tourists and traffic are just a mainland memory. If you are looking for a quiet tropical island to relax and unplug, Little Gasparilla is your dream vacation spot. Our "nightlife" consists of giant sea turtles laying their eggs -- our only bar is the sand bar where you can find sand dollars and shells!
Getting Around:
You park at Eldred's Marina on the mainland and catch the water taxi there. On island, you can rent a golf cart from LGI Carts for the duration of your stay. If LGI carts is sold out, the owner may offer their golf cart for a fee.
Other Things to Note:
Please evaluate your expectations before booking a stay on Little Gasparilla Island. If you are expecting a polished "resort" atmosphere, Little Gasparilla is decidedly more rustic. During periods of heavy rain or tropical storms, there may be standing water on the roadways, at the dock and around the house. This is a tropical environment with mosquitos, rust, power outages and other minor inconveniences. If you are expecting resort amenities and services, the island might not be for you.
HOLIDAY RATES: Please note that all there will be holiday rates applied to quotes for Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years.
There are no restaurants or grocery stores on the island so all groceries need to be brought over with you on the water taxi. Water taxi should be reserved about two weeks in advance.
PLEASE NOTE: We do require that two members of each group must be over 25 years of age. We apologize, but we can NOT rent to college groups as a courtesy to the homeowners and our island neighbors. Guests will be evicted if found not to meet age requirements upon check in. Additionally, we can not exceed capacity in island homes due to the fragile septic systems.
Interaction with Guests:
Our Guest Services Manager lives on island if you have immediately needs. Her contact information is provided when you book.
My family converged to the island from four states. We played, we walked, we shared, we ate, we laughed during our stay. The house had its own character and we felt at home. This was a much needed restful escape from out very stressful lives.
My husband and I enjoyed every part of this adventure! The quiet, beautiful, peacefulness was just what we hoped for. And the highlight was getting to meet Buddy!? Would defiantly come again!!!
Would do it again if I could get 6 consecutive weeks.
I am a professional interior designer in Atlanta for many years. So what others might feel is old, cluttered, and a little in disrepair, We found charming. The owners obviously were collectors for many years, two of the bedrooms were nice with comfortable beds. Loved the porches and listening to the crashing of waves . The house was beachfront so we could enjoy sunsets from our porch . Lovely and relaxing. That being said, the home could use some attention.
A little confusing directions on getting to the island and after that all we really enjoyed our very chill stay! The home was eclectically decorated which made for a relaxed and comfortable stay. The internet was hit or miss, thus it was very good that we had great cell phone coverage. My only complaint is that there wasn’t a good coffee maker to be found. It was the perfect spot to unwind from our way too hectic lives. Thank you!!
We had a fantastic time at the Coconut Hideaway! It was perfect for us to relax and unwind from reality. We felt very welcome and can't wait to visit again soon!
The ocean is just steps away, with an amazing outdoor shower. This place has thought of pretty much everything that you could want, the little touches are totally there. The pantry and amenities in the house are amazing! The ocean had a few waves and when there weren't waves it was so incredibly clear. So many shells and shark teeth to find as well! There is also a small tie-up right off the beach for a kayak which was super fun as a water base station for the little ones. The maintenance staff is amazing, I mentioned that one of the steps was a little loose and they fixed it right then. The only two things that I wish I had known is that all of the stairs in the house are slot style- just a little scary for little ones (but they do have a gate provided). The path that you have on the property to get to the beach is a communal path, and the maintenance staff headwaters is under the house - so there are people and off limits spaces under the house. It also means that sometimes you do not get a beach space right in front of the house you rented. I want to stress it wasn't bad- just something I would have preferred to know.
Our stay at Coconut Hideaway did not disappoint. Let me start by saying this house is older, but do NOT let this deter you. It has so much character, charm, so many many stories to tell; you can just feel the love that has filled this place. There are trinkets from all over the world, just an amazingly unique touch. If that wasn't enough it also emits a warm and cozy ambiance, you will seriously feel as if you are visiting friends or family, the house is so inviting. The hard wood floors are absolutely beautiful and the high vaulted wood ceiling and beams are gorgeous. It is situated steps away from the beach with plenty of outdoor lounging areas to pick from. The beach has community chairs and even coming at the end of May most days in the afternoon we had the beach pretty much to ourselves. Little Gasparilla Island is definitely a hidden gem. Thank you so much for allowing us to enjoy your little slice of Heaven.
Our family has stayed at this property many times. Each time we come back we can’t wait to hang out on the out door porch overlooking the Gulf of Mexico and enjoy the peace and quite and beauty of this island. This house is AMAZING and feels like home. I highly recommend this home. You will get hooked on the charm of Little Gasparilla and return. Special thanks to Laurie and Buddy for sharing their home with us!
The rental fulfilled our families desires; fishing, snorkeling, beach combing, swimming, we brought our paddle board! Loved the welcoming, homey space! And being able to cook and relax as a family!!! Precious moments shared there! Thank you!
