This stately residence on Chesconessex Creek on Virginia's Eastern Shore dates to 1835. Known as Clifton the property was patented in 1668 to Colonel John Wise and was a plantation of over 750 acres surveyed. It is tradition that Col. Wise had built the first Clifton, naming it after his English home (A75B, pg 948 in Whitelaws). A graveyard exists today located NE of the house and contains numerous tombstones of the Wise family descendants.
The Clifton House is like stepping into your own manor by the bay. The large 5-acre property ensures privacy and peace. Upon our arrival, the home was clean and the furniture in good condition. The house is LARGE with room for everyone in our party of 8 to spread out and relax. For 6 guests in our party, this was their second stay at the Clifton House, and they all said it was as wonderful as they all remembered. All the rooms boast gorgeous views and lots of light from the numerous windows. There is a nice set of outdoor furniture and a ceiling fan on the front screened in porch where many in our party took afternoon naps or read. The back deck has a large dining table with an umbrella which we enjoyed hanging out around when we weren’t in the enormous pool. I barely wore any of the clothes I packed as I was either in my bathing suit or pajamas? During our stay, every day was hot and humid, so the pool was very much appreciated. The air conditioning in the house worked great and the new appliances in the kitchen, including a gas stove, refrigerator, dishwasher, and washer dryer are all ample in size and made us feel very much at home. The house came with lots of pool floats, lounge chairs and a huge shade umbrella by the pool. The shed next to the home was filled with kayaks, paddles, and life jackets for everyone to use. The long dock was fantastic to fish off and the steps and kayak launch ramp made getting into the water a breeze. We tried to take advantage o
At the end of June 2023 I had the pleasure of marrying my high school sweetheart at The Clifton House(my childhood home). The property was beautifully maintained and the pool a huge bonus. The house is how I remembered it, lovely and charming. We look forward to making Clifton House an annual destination for our family!
Beautiful location. Amazing views. Peaceful and truly enjoyable. We plan on returning in the future.
We had a beautiful vacation at Clifton. The location was fantastic with a great view of the bay off the deck. The house was equipped with all the comforts of home and we really enjoyed the pool table. The outdoor pool was great. The grounds were very well kept everything was top notch. Any minor issues we had were addressed promptly by the property manager Peter. While kayaking on the bay we were able to see all kinds of wildlife including crabs, birds, and we managed to get up close and personal with a ray! Fantastic vacation! The Brady's and Johnsons
This home was so lovely to stay in. The view was amazing! the bedrooms were clean and the beds comfortable. The kitchen appliances were adequate and the pool was a great addition for a family. The Wifi wasn't great but worked as expected and the TVs always had service for those movie nights. It would have been great to have gardens on the property, historical/period pictures, and a small display of the old tools that were laying around in the shed. The geese were abundant when we initially arrived which created a hassle walking on part of the property and difficulty controlling the flies. But seemed to stay away once we settled in. This is a pet -friendly place which is also a plus-plus. Being able to vacation with our puppy was so perfect. It is gated so we didn't have a worry to let her outside to play. We would definitely stay here again. Perhaps in the fall/winter when we can use the beautiful fireplaces.
The pictures online do not do this property justice. There is so much space and privacy. The pool was an outdoor hit too! We will definitely be booking again for next year.
We had an amazing extended weekend at the Clifton house. The house is absolutely beautiful, and the pool was a dream. It was a great time escaping reality to spend time with loved ones. The view was beautiful, and such a peaceful time out on the water in the kayaks. We are definitely hoping to come back again soon.
Great historical home for larger families to spread out. Comfortable for our 8 person family that includes 6 kiddos of all ages. We loved having the yard to play in good weather and the pool table for after dark or during the extremely cold days! Family from close by were able to come and enjoy thanksgiving dinner with us without us feeling cramped! The wasps are still out in force even in the cold weather so if you have anyone allergic keep that in mind. Luckily the mosquitoes and other outdoor bugs from other reviews were already down for the season as we have one kiddo allergic to mosquitoes. The stairs leading to most of the bedrooms are very steep for little kiddos so we set up the air bed for the 3 little kids to stay in the sitting room. Peace of mind for myself but they thought it was an awesome sleep over! Beautiful place to stay.
Clifton House has so much to offer, but misses the mark with VERY limited wifi and spotty cell service(that's not mentioned), a lovely, large pool with no shade considerations(no umbrellas), fabulous kayaks and life vests, but no way to wash them down(no outside water), needing to cart your garbage(not mentioned) and spotty cleanliness.
We had a great time, the house was beautiful! Pros: Having the pool to cool off was great. The home was clean and very comfortable. All the bedrooms were spacious and comfortable. My grandson loved fishing from the dock and we enjoyed eating a few of the crabs caught in the traps. There is lots of wildlife with geese and frogs in the yard, and we saw many deer across the street! Cons: All trash must be taken to the Dump, which is closed on Wednesday, our checkout day. Thankfully my husband took most of it the night before we left, but we still had a bag of smelly garbage in our car, looking for a someplace to put it. We went to a local coffee shop and they agreed to allow us to put in their dumpster. The trash instructions should mention the hours and days the dump is open. And lastly, we were visited by a water snake in the pool twice, even when we were swimming! It was alarming to everyone to see how bold and quickly the get into the pool. They seem to live under the deck next to the pool, and surrounding grasses by the nearby pond.. Not sure what can be done!
