Brewster, Massachusetts
Thank you for visiting our site. Whether you are looking for one week or a few months, we invite you to consider our home. Please note that we accept only full week rentals from mid-June to mid-September, but anything from weekend to long term stays is most welcome during the rest of the year.
We are ideally situated, with an approximately 45 minute drive to both Provincetown and to Plymouth. Provincetown is near the site of the first landing of the Mayflower, and Plymouth is the site of the Pilgrims' first settlement. If you are interested in early American history, want to learn more about our country's beginnings, or simply want to see the area, this is the place for you. We are conveniently located for walks at the beach, fishing, golfing, fine dining, or enjoying our beautiful sunsets. And if you decide to stay at home, our yard is peaceful and soothing.
Our home, the Elisha Howland Saltbox, provides your opportunity to experience the unmatched essence of a true 'Olde Cape Cod' home. We offer a restored 1824 Saltbox with 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. There is a separate rental opportunity on the property for two more guests in the detached cottage, though this is only available to guests in the main house, for an additional fee which is listed below. Our home is available for a minimum of two days to several months from October 1st to June 15th, and we welcome guests 52 weeks/year. During the summer season, we rent by the week. Please note that we do NOT supply bed linens and towels from June 15 to September 15, though we are happy to help you arrange them through a rental service. Please contact us regarding linens if you cannot bring them.
Our 1824 home is located in one of the most historic areas of Brewster. Small on size but big on charm, you will see many of the original features, such as the 'ladder' stairs, the old floorboards, the wavy glass windows carefully preserved, and a working replica of the original fireplace. Lovingly brought back to life, this restored antique home truly is a home away from home, complemented with all the modern comforts - fully equipped kitchen, dishwasher, basement washer and dryer, cable TV, DVD player, and wifi. We are open year round and welcome you for a visit, whether it's for a weekend, a week, a month or more. We welcome weekend guests during the winter, spring, and fall, and occasionally can accommodate stays of less than one week during the summer.
Located in a quiet residential area of the Sea Captain's town of Brewster, our home has a spacious yard featuring two flower gardens and a shade garden with a stone patio and sitting area. Adjacent to the patio is a water feature with a gurgling stream, making a lovely spot to sit and enjoy a cup of morning coffee or perhaps a glass of wine at the end of the day.
The detached cottage is a separate rental, which may be rented for additional charge by the week or for a shorter period, with a two night minimum stay. We are delighted to offer this space to our guests who rent the main house, to be used by families who would like to bring a grandparent or two, or by couples who enjoy vacationing together, but also want to respect each other's space. The cottage offers a queen bed, small sitting area with microwave, dorm-style refrigerator, TV, and a full bathroom with shower. There is a screened porch with a patio table for two. The cottage rate is $125/night for a minimum stay of 2 nights, or $750/week during the summer season. Please contact us for off-season per week rates. Daily rates remain the same. Please note that the cottage is not available as a separate and primary rental.
Very charming cottage. Excellent facilities. Full-size kitchen with all amenities. Everything we needed for a weeklong stay.
We had a wonderful experience in this historic, Cape Cod cottage. Thanks for everything!
We had an amazing time at the cape. The Sept weather was awesome. We used this as base camp to enjoy the beaches, hiking and Kayaking. The information book with restaurant recommendations was spot on. This little home was perfect for the two of us. We will definitely stay again!
The property was adorable and exactly as described. The stairs are steep just like she said, but I had no problem navigating them, and I’m mature and chunky! The beds were comfortable. Everything was clean and we loved reading the history of the little house. The owner was absolutely amazing, providing us recommendations for things to see and do, places to eat, and help during Hurricane/Tropical Storm Lee. I would 100% stay here again on a future trip to Cape Cod!
Lovely restored antique home with an interesting history. Quiet and comfortable space for our base camp as we explored the outer Cape and the National Seashore! Great communication with the owner.
Absolutely loved this place. It’s not for everyone as this home is very old and doesn’t provide all of the modern everyday conveniences. There is internet and it has everything you need but like all older homes it has some quirks. The upstairs bath has a very small tub and doesn’t have a hand held shower head but is perfect for children. The downstairs bath has a small shower. The stairs to the upper level are very steep so if you’re elderly this may not work for you. The home has a rich history and it was interesting to read up on it and then try to figure how things were originally. The owners did a great job keeping the authenticity during renovation. The gardens all around the house were absolutely gorgeous. Roses and Peony’s were in bloom while we were there but I’m sure something is blooming all season as there were many different types of plants. Hydrangeas among them. I knew about this home as I had lived in Brewster while raising my children and we built a 3/4 Cape using a lot of the authentic designs as well. It was a joy to stay here and walk back through the memories of time.
We had the best Sister Weekend! The historical salt box did not disappoint. The stairs are definitely a challenge, but the owner makes that clear in the descriptive write up and pictures on the website. Beds are very comfortable and we truly enjoyed ourselves. Thank you Jane!
We stay at the Cape in different villages every year, depending on how much of the family can come. This year was just us. This lovely little cottage was conveniently located, had all the amenities we needed, and was just as presented in the initial description. We very much enjoyed our stay.
This is house is very interesting. Great location if you want to be on the northside. The owner, Jane, was great. She replied quickly to any of my questions and made everything simple. The house is a small, historic cape style house. The bedrooms are decent sized. The bathrooms are small but very functional. If you are a party of very tall people, this might pose a problem. The door from the driveway into the house is small, like 5'5, so taller than that and you are ducking to get in. The stairs to the upstairs are steep, there are pictures up that show it but still surprising in person. The kitchen had most things that you would need for cooking. The ability to rent the side-cottage on property is a great bonus feature. I would definitely stay here again if we wanted a house in this area.
Perfect fit for the two of us. Clean, comfortable, very nice landscaped yard. Easy to communicate with host.
Overall impression is we’ll be back.
Wonderful property; we thoroughly enjoyed this unique historic home and the convenience of being close to downtown Brewster. Would recommend for couples or small groups of friends.
The adorable and lovingly restored Elisha Howland saltbox is the perfect place to stay on Cape Cod. So historic and homey! Easy to get anywhere you want to sightsee. Just can’t say how much I enjoyed this stay!
What a wonderful stay. Our first time to visit and Jane was extremely responsive even before booking. The booking process was easy and Jane was quick to confirm. The house is so charming and just what we expected from an old half-Cape salt box. It’s impressive how much effort they put into restoring it and telling the Elisha Howland story. It’s a great location to get to east or west side of the Cape. Pics of the garden don’t do it justice. We loved sitting outside enjoying coffee. Everything is as described and pictured. We can’t wait to return. Thanks so much, Jane!
Lovely home and beautiful gardens which were just starting to come into bloom. I have already decided that I must visit again when more flowers are there to welcome me. Would love to try Grandma's cottage with a friend. A very relaxing 2 days, drove to Chatham for lunch at the Grey Goose it was a perfect day!
Overall as promised. Front of property is way overgrown and we couldn't find it at first. The smoke detector above the bed on the second floor was a constant annoyance as it flashes green all night long. Disspointed that linens were not provided. The rental linens did not fit. Couldn't figure out how to get the water fountain up and running.
Delightful historic cottage lovingly restored- so charming and cozy! Beautiful gardens. A perfect location for exploring the cape. The owner, Jane, is so thoughtful and accommodating..
It was a lovely place that fit our needs. I liked the quiet neighborhood.
We had a wonderful stay in this lovingly restored saltbox, attention to detail was stunning. Although our stay was short, we hope to come back.
