Alpine, Texas
Adobe Vista is a two bedroom, two bath adobe home with commanding views of Sul Ross State University and surrounding Alpine, nestled on the slope of 'A Mountain', imagine an adobe hug!
Handmade in 2002 by the Peters family of four, Ted, Peggy and two daughters, Elaine (age 17), and Terra (age 13). Everyday 180 adobe bricks were made on-site with local dirt from a ranch. That dirt was hand-sifted, mixed with gravel, 10% cement, water, and love in a giant mixer! Dumped into a wheelbarrow, it was then, poured into a handmade form that looked like a giant bread pan without a bottom, holding nine breads. With handy hoes, we tamped the thick mud several times to ensure no air pockets, and like thick cake batter it sputtered and flopped into its form. Then the tops of the form were scraped with a door threshold and the little mud around the top were cut with a butter knife so when the form was lifted it didn't take the top with it. Left to dry about 5 minutes, then the form was lifted up, which took two people pulling evenly and coming up at the same time to minimize corner damages and birth the perfect nine bricks! Morning bricks were baked enough by the Big Bend sun that by the afternoon, they were turned on their side to dry overnight before being stacked the next morning. It took 3,000 of these to make Adobe Vista. Every brick was levelled and laid. You will see the walls have alternating brick sides, one level is longwise and the next layer was laid short side. This was for added stability of the structure. The adobe is exposed both inside and outside because 10% cement was mixed into the mud, making it possible to see every brick and enjoy the earthly and immense texture of adobe.
Adobe Vista was built for Elaine and Terra to attend Sul Ross State University. Doing so, they enjoyed living there throughout college. Now, nineteen years later Adobe Vista still gives adobe hugs! It's a feeling of comfort and peace that only 18 inches of handmade- mother earth walls can give. We hope that during your stay, you enjoy some of these hugs; they're on us!

We loved our stay at Adobe Vista. Perfect space, everything was nice and clean and a great location with beautiful views! Had everything we could need! Definitely recommend and will stay again!
A definite gem in a friendly n interesting town in West West Texas.
This is the second year in a row I’ve stayed here in November and it’s a great place! I highly recommend. Great location and all you need in Alpine!
Perfect location for us. Great view from the windows of Sul Ross and Alpine.
Was very comfortable and easy to access everywhere we wanted to go.
We enjoyed our stay. The area looks a little sketchy but we did have any issues with anyone. Just the neighbors dog that kept coming over trying to start stuff with our dogs. House is very cute.
Cozy but modern comfortable furnishings temperature controls for each room well equipped kitchen. Great water pressure.in shower excellent. Lovely area with night lights outside. No chemical smell and good coffèe_tea provided. Chaming natural fèel. I would gladly return
Great place to stay. Quiet and close to everything. Great view of Alpine at night and the mountains. Everything you could want.
Very cozy and quiet. Wi-fi iffy
Great little cottage.
The house is just perfect and fully stocked. The views are amazing and sunset behind Haystack Mountain was beautiful. We will be back!
Easy renting experience. Home was decorated inside beautifully and had a great city lights view. We enjoyed our stay very much
This was my wife and I home base for our Big Bend vacation. We loved the house and it's history it was perfect for us. The only negative was the Tv it seemed like the only way to watch anything was to have a Netflix or Hulu account of your own to login, since we didn't have any of that so we didn't watch anything on tv..
Fantastic, cozy house with great history. The view of Alpine after dark is worth waiting for. Very clean and accommodating. We will be back. Thank you!
This is a delightful little casita with everything you need to be comfortable and relaxed. Close to town with restaurants and stores this place is a winner.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The neighborhood was quiet and the town view was great. The house was stocked really well.
Great house and great view!!
We had a great trip. The place was clean and comfortable, and met all of our needs. I would recommend it.
Loved the property and location with the view. It has a microwave now. Pillows are very fat and hard on your neck. Bring your own.
Only problem was the door lock. The instructions were for a different door lock and we had difficulty locking the front door. April was responsive and the problem was fixed. Otherwise this property was excellent
This casita was very comfortable, two bedrooms and two baths make it very convenient for two or four people. Small kitchen but has all of the necessities for simple meals, drinks and chips. Lovely view from front windows and outside eating table and chairs. Close to town, could easily walk to close restaurants.
The property was perfect for 4 adults. Well equipped kitchen. Lovely view. Clean and comfortable.
Very cute, well done and exceptionally clean house. Perfect for the 4 of us and our dogs. Great views. Unfortunately it rained A LOT while we were there but we loved the house and the area. It was lacking in a few basic things (no extra paper towel, no real cleaning supplies, limited toiletries, no aluminum foil or that type of stuff - and few towel hooks/bars for wet towels - also limited towels available) but despite these very minor things, we really enjoyed ourselves. Very nice and very comfortable. (Especially enjoyed the clawfoot tub!!)
A fantastic home for Big Bend adventures! The house is so comfortable, very well appointed, and has two comfy beds. The split cooling system worked great, even with the record Texas, July 2022 heat wave challenge. But by far, the most amazing experience we had in this house was the incredible view of Alpine when sitting outside at this house situated close to the top of one of the tallest hills in town. At night it was a magical panoply of stars. We saw the Milky Way after dark. And during the day there was a great view of the town of Alpine itself. I highly recommend this amazing adobe home as anyone's home away from home in Alpine.
Great location, great people, good times.
Great cozy house. Loved the doggie door. Had everything you would need to cook and/or bake. Host was quick to respond to any texts.
