I don’t usually write reviews. Opinions vary greatly. But I felt I needed to in order to offer a fair choice for someone else which I feel I did not get based on the pictures and prior 23 reviews. The home was fairly clean however dust was on bedside tables. There were mice traps available for mice if needed. We didn’t. A letter with the mouse traps explained the need for them. It explained that mice were common in the forest and can get the house and further explained to not leave food out. We kept all food in fridge. Linens seemed fairly clean but very old. I appreciate family heirlooms but I I wasn’t prepared to use someone else’s. Towels/cloths were old and worn as well. The furniture is very old. One recliner offered no back support when in recline position. Trails were not found that are mentioned in the online description. Maybe this is a reference to the trails at Elk Knob Park which is close to the rental. There were various roads gong into the property but these roads did not seem like a trail and I did not feel comfortable walking not knowing if it was part of the 58 acres given in the description of the property or if I was trespassing. The outside property near the cabin needs attention as well -overgrown. Luckily this was not a trip to rest and relax in the rental. We were busy with fall festivals and looking at the beautiful fall leaves and stayed very little in the cabin. We felt this rental could be a great place to stay with some work.
This was our second visit. We were also there in 2022. It’s a beautiful home in a gorgeous location near Elk Knob State Park.
If you want a quiet place to rest and relax this is the place to go. Has a great rustic feel to it. Made me feel like no one and nothing was anywhere around. Went hiking on some of the trails and just enjoyed a relaxing vacation. For those who want the night life, Boone is only 30 minutes away. Plenty of cookware available, grill with gas or charcoal. Just be sure to pick up supplies before you go in because it's 20 minutes to a dollar general. Huge deck to set out on and enjoy the view. Just be aware that you are in the country, got to hear bobcat and wolf. The old school workmanship on the house is amazing with love edge woodworking galore. Loved the cut down stumps used as end tables. It is pretty friendly as well. Hope to spend a week next time we stay
The property was very clean and good sized. Nice large deck on back. It was quiet and serene; which we thoroughly enjoyed. There was a cabin nearby and behind and we were fortunate that no one was staying there or it could have disturbed our peaceful retreat. I would suggest a landline phone, if available, as even though we have Verizon (with latest cell phones), we RARELY had any kind of cell service so unable to use phone (or laptop 98% of time). We did not receive any specific checkout instructions so left the cabin using other instructions from previous cabins; in very good condition. Very isolated, with just us there. Overall it was an extremely nice quiet stay and I was very impressed with the cleanliness of the cabin. My suggestions are just that and not criticism. Thank you for the enjoyable stay.
58 acres, surrounded by 2300 acres of Elk Knob State Park. Perfect for us and our two Rhodesian Ridgebacks. The silence was awesome - so quiet that when we went down to Boone, the noise was shocking. Wish we'd booked 3 months instead of one.
secluded house, everything we needed and more. close to a town and lots of outdoor activities.
During my stay, I must admit I often was mindful of a state likely not felt since a very young child, the state of absolute calm and relaxation of both mind and body. It is a rare occurrence indeed to experience tranquility day after day where the mind is not bogged down with rush or worry and every muscle in the body is relaxed. The deck is useful anytime with both covered and uncovered sections and the kitchen has enough cookware to prepare any meal. I must admit to binge watching Daisy and the Six because the television channels were fully loaded with options. Outdoors there are trails right on the property and the fields are bush hogged so that the view whether in sunlight or fog is just lovely. The drive into Boone is not bad and I enjoyed several meals there. River Girl Outfitters is a nice option for fishing, biking, river activities or nature excursions. They also host farm to table type charity events once a month or so. The State Park is a couple miles up the road for hiking or Snake Mountain. The local artists are abundant and it is worth it to seek out where they display and sell their pieces. You can find anything from pottery to watercolors to jewelry and more made local. I also purchased many things for cooking grown locally. This is the type of place where you will sleep like a baby, play outdoors like a kid again, or even roast some Winnie’s and melt s’mores at the fire pit while throwing back a few beers just like your fondest memories with college friends.
The place is beautiful! I wanted something remote and peaceful and this place was it. It actually wasn't as difficult to get there as I thought it would be but would definitely recommend arriving during the day. We spent a lot of time exploring, hiking, and for dinner one night we headed to Boone. It was honestly the best vacation we have had (kids are 9 and 13)!
The pictures and description of this property do not do it justice. The home itself is much nicer, and much larger, than it appeared online. We arrived after dark, the host had turned the lights on for us and the home was spotless, with beautiful woodwork throughout. The next morning we were able to take in the incredible territorial view. My favorite day we spent at the property was the day we just hung out on the deck, watching birds and enjoying the silence. We spent our time driving back to Wilmington planning our next visit to this home. It was a perfect vacation.
I don't recommend arriving after dark. Google maps took us to the door without a problem, but driving in after the sun set left us uneasy and concerned we might not be headed in the right direction as we left the paved road and travelled in on a narrow gravel road. I would recommend you go in with a 4-wheel vehicle as the roadway is in good shape, for a gravel road, but there are inclines that can cause the 2-wheel to spin a bit. The host is very friendly and very responsive to our call for an issue with the door lock. We really enjoyed the wood heater and TV and internet when it turned cold and rainy for 2 days of our visit.
This place is perfect if you want to get away from everything and relax. The house had what we needed, and the directions were easy to follow. There is a nice fire pit and wood, so we were able to celebrate our daughter’s birthday with s’mores. And the price is just right.
We had a little of a hard time finding it but it was very nice when we finally got there. There was definitely privacy and we saw wildlife our first day. We did have to travel back out for a blow up mattress as it stated that it sleeps 6 adults but the couch is not large enough for an adult or my teenage son. The cabin had everything we needed otherwise and the host was very responsive. We enjoyed our hikes up into the mountains but it is more of a “stay at home” kind of vaca and not a “travel out everyday” kind of vaca as the road was curvy and 30 minutes from a store and out for most activities. We did enjoy our time and the teenagers said the wifi was great.
Always enjoy the area and this house is perfect for mountain getaway!!!
We really enjoyed our stay. Will be back for sure.
We had a great time staying at this home in Todd. We were looking to disconnect some and the property was isolated and in a beautiful location. Tom was extremely communicative throughout our stay, and very easy to work with as a host.
