Cape Vincent, New York
2023 update : No high water this year.. We have also added additional filtration to our water system. New 2021 outdoor enclosed shower with great views. New 2021 outdoor stone terrace by house 2022 added Thermidor stove/oven with outside ventilation, and added one more trail 2023 replaced some furniture and added new flooring to second floor
Escape from the crowds! Satellite internet(not quite as good as cable, but you can video conference, Zoom etc) allows for ability to work remotely or just stream videos and relax. This is a well maintained four bedroom, cottage, with AC (an additional stone cottage, with AC, houses the 5th bedroom, but has no bathroom) with a barn(with 'game room' on second, unfinished, floor with ping pong, foos ball, weights) and dock(holds four boats) at the foot of Grenadier Island(no bridge!), which is at the mouth of the St. Lawrence Seaway and is a part of the Thousand Islands.
All the rooms offer a spectacular view of Lake Ontario, including passing freighters in the distance, and/or Basin Harbor. The house sits on approximately 700 acres of private preserve, on a 1200 acre island great for exclusive nature adventures. You are renting much more than just a house! The house itself is on seven acres of lawn, with stone fire pit by shore. We have also purchased a commercial insect fogger to reduce or eliminate (or close to it!) any mosquitoes or other insects around house. Spraying done regularly, when guests not present.
The house has the charm of an old stone house with the comforts and conveniences of a new home. There is a large master bedroom with a private balcony and ensuite tossed marble bathroom, a bedroom with a queen bed and another with a pair of twin beds and lounge area(including pull out sofa), as well as a 4 bed bunk room with a loft.
The separate stone cottage contains a full size bed. The two other bathrooms(all bathrooms have at least a shower) are relatively new, and tiled in marble as well. The full kitchen has almost every convenience; including a kitchen aide, ice cream maker, warming drawer, waffle iron and new Thermidor range.
Grenadier Island is nicknamed 'The Paradise of Kings'(but should be Queens as well). On the island you can hike, swim (use of a private beach at the head of the island as well as, flat stone beach by the house), boat, bird watch, mountain bike, fish, water ski, tube, and more! (provided with rental are: canoe, 2 kayaks, and a paddle board .There is even a restored 19th century one story school house on property with original desks which kids amd adults love. All other pictures are on the island or beach on west side.
In September/October, there is still plenty to do, from apple picking(numerous apple trees on property, hiking, bon fires by newly renovated fire pit, or just reading by the two fireplaces.
If you choose to leave this bit of paradise, then you can go ashore where you can find tennis, golf, shopping, movies, museums, bars, restaurants, etc., or head over to Kingston, Canada which is about 40 minutes away by boat. (It's a bit longer if you take the Ferry from Cape Vincent), or go to Cape Vincent by 15 minute boat ride, to visit one of its stores or restaurants

A great place to spend a week and disconnect from the everyday life. Great property with lots or as little to do as you want. Very nice people to deal with for booking and our stay. It has become our home away from home.
Our family travels quite a bit, but this island now occupies a special place in our hearts! John (our host) and George (the property caretaker) both went above and beyond to make us feel welcome and make sure we had everything we needed. The house is both elegant and comfortable, and we felt at home immediately. We woke up to jaw-dropping views in the mornings, then went on day-long adventures all around the island. No one day was the same, and we kept finding new surprises and delights. We built a fire by the lake every evening to watch the stunning sunsets, and then we'd retire to the cozy library to collapse in the comfy chairs and enjoy our books or a movie. We left yesterday and I miss the island already!
We absolutely loved our week here and we certainly hope to come back again in the near future! What a place to escape and relax and enjoy nature! There's so much for everyone to do and so much to explore. The property was beautiful and the lake water was so clean. We enjoyed lots of fishing and beautiful sunsets and relaxing on the porch.... can't wait to go back!
One of a kind property. Was more then I expected. Truly a special place
One of a kind family vacation! Private, relaxing, and so much to do. We all really enjoyed ourselves!
Once again my family and I had a fantastic time on the island! The house is super-comfortable with plenty of places to hang out. The views from the deck are spectacular. The island has lots of nooks and crannies to explore, including a white sand beach. The house and garage are stocked with everything you would need (including extra beach chairs - a nice touch), and the recent addition of a commercial icemaker makes island life a lot easier. The owner is great to deal with and George the caretaker makes sure you are always well taken care of. This is our favorite vacation spot by far. Love this place!
My family had an amazing time on Grenadier Island. If you are looking for a place to escape and enjoy nature (with all the modern conveniences) then this is the place for you. There is plenty to explore on the island and the natural beauty of the place is unparalleled. Wild life is plentiful - we saw deer, foxes, mink, cranes, herons, geese, snakes, frogs, osprey, eagles, and numerous other types of birds. The house is incredibly comfortable and has everything you need during your stay. Our family only left the island once during our stay for provisions. The owner John and his caretaker George are incredibly helpful and made sure we had everything that we needed. You can tell that this isn't a normal vacation rental -- it is a family home that clearly John and his family cherish. We will definitely be back next year.
Very nice...maybe a little remote for some , but perfect for our family
Another great vacation on the books at Grenadier Island! The house is very comfortable, even for my crew of 10 people! Lots of places to hang out, cook and eat together too! The views from all of the porches are fantastic. Loved the addition of the A/C throughout the house! There is so much to do on the island that we hardly ever left the place! John (the owner) is very accommodating and responds to requests immediately. This is our favorite place to vacation in Cape Vincent. We will definitely be back next year!!!
My family of 6 (kids ages - 15, 13, 7 & 7) and our 2 labs had the most wonderful time at John's place. We spent all of our time outdoors - jumping from the boat, to the paddle boards, to the ATV's/Polaris. The scenery was gorgeous and having the island to explore everyday was so much fun. Long walks, catching frogs, turtles, and fish and than water front fire pits nightly made for an amazing get away from it all! Thank you John! And thank you to George for all your assistance!
