The shearing cottage is located on Sawdon Station a high country sheep station, 5 minutes drive to Lake Tekapo, and 20 minutes drive to Fairlie.

The 'shearing quarters' is set up for the people who shear our merino sheep in September. We are opening again March 2026, after a number of years closed with a permanent tenant, and contractors.

This accommodation is VERY basic, with a large kitchen, heat pump, wood fire, four bedrooms. It has older beds, and furniture, one verybasis shower room, and a limited laundry/bathroom area. Its accommodation for the hardy Kiwi to stay in, possibly not somewhere for overseas visitors.

Excellent location for families, who would like to experience a farm, huge area around the house, for cricket, mountain biking, walking, flying kites...... Great location to escape from the stress of life. We have a maximum of 6 adults for this cottage.

Full tea, coffee and sugar supplied, but no milk. Just need to bring your clothing, and food.

Close to Lake Tekapo, with its excellent hot pools, the night sky, the lake for swimming, boat cruising, and fishing. Walking to the top of Mt John, and the best Japanese restaurant in the country!

Cottage gets all day sun, is surrounded by the spectacular southern alps and the Mackenzie Basin. By climbing the small hill behind the cottage you can see for miles, 360 degrees - absolutely beautiful on a crystal-clear day.

Please read all our excellent reviews, ok back in 2020, but heaps has happened since then!

Please ensure you advise the numbers of guests staying, so I can give the correct price per night.

Smoking outside only.

No dogs allowed.

No hunting on the property. We employ a pest controller.

The cottage is located on a working high-country farm so caution should be taken as there are many hazards. Especially young children, with a creek and busy farm track nearby.

What an amazing old farmhouse, lovingly restored by the owners. A fantastic place to stay while exploring the Lake Tekapo area. Would stay again any time!

The kids love it at Sawdon Station. They get to go on a tractor ride and bottle feed the young sheeps. It was a great experience for the kids. Plus the whole family get to stay together in a big house with facilities to cook. If one is travelling from Lake Tekapo, must take a good look out on the left side of the road. We missed it the first time. Other than that, all was great.

What a great place to stay! We had a family get-together with 10 in total. The cottage is very well equipped with plenty of space and all the children had an awesome time on the farm (no electronics in tow), just bein kids. Would definitely stay again. Many thanks ??

This was a great experience and our family that came from Perth loved it including the snow. The accomodation was just what we needed and we would certainly come again. Our hosts where very welcoming including a basket of fresh farm eggs and the fire going on arrival. Thanks again

We absolutely loved our time staying in the shearers' quarters at Sawdon Station. The location is the best of both worlds - you feel like you're miles from anywhere, but it's an easy five-minute drive from Tekapo. The accommodation was super cosy and comfortable, with a big stack of wood for a roaring fire, and magical views beyond the woolshed to the mountains. We loved collecting pinecones for the fire, having family dinners around the big kitchen table, and just standing outside gazing at the incredible starry sky! Sue was a lovely host who made sure we had everything we needed and gave us lots of great recommendations for local activities - including horse trekking, which was amazing. We really hope to come back one day!

We had a fantastic few days there with family over the New Year period. Gazing up at the awesome starry night sky while welcoming in the New Year was a highlight! The Shearing Quarters was perfect for us, with plenty of space for all and a large lounge to play board games, cards etc or just reading a book. Close to Tekapo but gave us the feeling we were miles from the crowds in our own little slice of paradise!
