Stayed Dec 31, 1969We were a party of 8 adults and four children under 3, and we stayed for a week. The building itself is a charming old farm house that is constantly being restored and rejuvenated by its devoted owner. There is plenty of space indoors for grownups either to mingle in the main living room or to isolate themselves in their generous bedrooms, perhaps enjoying one of the many tempting novels and classics that line the house's bookshelves or just a movie. The furnishings are a study in simple elegance - there are just enough chairs and couches for everyone to relax, but no attempt is made to fill empty spaces. The result is a very uncluttered house, which is a welcome respite from our cluttered modern lives. Additionally, there is plenty of room for children to careen around on rainy days. From the living room we enjoyed panoramic views of the neighbouring rapeseed fields. In the evenings, the lighting that streams through the windows is breathtaking. We enjoyed interrupting our dinners to look at the deer and pheasants that strayed through the yard, and so did our children. The sauna was a also godsend for those of us who had stresses and aches to nurse. The yard is an expanse of green that offers limitless opportunities for children to run, play games, and generally wear themselves out in safety, and there are even a few choice yard toys in the basement that our children enjoyed. The closest thing to a drawback regarding this property is the number of small ways in which old houses inevitably add character to everyday lives. For example, a bit of rain trickled through the front door onto the stone floor in the antechamber, and some of the faucets require a little extra effort to turn off. I notified the owner of the quirks that we encountered, however, and he is extremely responsive. We enjoyed daily walks down to and along the dike that traces Fehmarn's coastline - it's 15-20 minutes to get there if walking and then one can walk as far as one wants. Many of us also enjoyed jogging down to the water and along the dike. And on good days there were dozens of lovely sailboats (and no motorboats or jet skis) to enjoy the sight of. A slight drawback is the fact that one must drive 10 minutes to Burg to do any shopping, but this didn't really bother us. Overall, the relaxing, expansive feel that we enjoyed during our stay coupled with the extremely responsive owner mean that we would gladly return.
