West Jefferson, North Carolina
This 2009 built retreat features a 3000’ elevation, great mountain views, river access, a secluded location, and a huge screened porch.
The location of The Cottage is less than 10 minutes from Downtown West Jefferson where many festivals are held and many artisans keep shop. The town offers a few restaurants, bars, art galleries, an ice cream parlor, and a coffee shop. This is the only place in NC where cheese is made, and you can watch at the Ashe County Cheese factory downtown. Boone is a 25 minute drive, Appalachian Ski Resort is 45 minutes away, Beech and Sugar are about an hour drive.
Entertainment is provided by ROKU internet TV including programming by Netflix and Amazon Prime. Living has a 36” TV with ROKU. Full bedroom has a 13” TV with ROKU.
The kitchen includes a full compliment of cookware, silverware, and small appliances. Coffee by Keurig, bring your favorite K-cups. A small gas grill with complimentary fuel is provided. A full sized washer/dryer unit is down the hall when you need to wash a load of clothes.
Internet data flows via dual band WiFi at broadband speeds. You may connect your phone, tablet, laptop, etc. to the wireless network with ease. Download speeds average 15 Mbps. Please be advised there is no landline phone at the cottage, so you may want to verify your cell phone is set up for Wifi calling before arrival. Most cell service by any carrier is spotty at best in the mountains in general.
Guests enjoy river access via a private riverfront property that is yours exclusively during your stay. An elevated wood deck overlooks the South Fork of The New River. The River Access Lot is walking distance from The Cottage along a trail. A gravel road exists if you prefer driving, or if you are hauling boats in or out of the river.
Numerous walking trails are available to hike. There are over 5 miles of old logging roads and gravel roads to explore. Please be advised, the road to the cottage is a gravel one with a hairpin turn into the driveway. If you drive a large vehicle, you will have to make more than one attempt at the hairpin turn or park beside the driveway on the gravel road. You may have to back all the way out if you do not feel comfortable turning around.
Sorry, no pets.
It was perfect for a relaxing weekend away from the hustle and bustle of work and life
My parents had a great time! Everything was great and clean.
I got this rental for my 80 YO parents to come stay for a week as I have pets and they dont do well with them. The cabin was clean and nice. It located close to town, yet far away enough to bee away from the traffic and noise. It was a very pleasant stay. The only downfall was that there were grease and food bits on every single plate in the cabinet. Guests are supposed to do their own dishes, so I dont feel like it is the owners fault, but maybe checking the dishes when the place is cleaned would be a worthwhile effort.
This cabin was beautiful! Very clean, well stocked and in the perfect location. The beds were extremely comfortable and the porch and view was top notch. The driveway was not an issue (if you pull forward a little and back in it makes it a little easier). We can’t wait to come back!!! The host were amazing and the town is like a hallmark movie. We never ran out of things to see and do and actually can’t wait to go back. I hate to post this review and have this cabin book up so fast that we have to worry about availability however the hosts deserve the credit where credit is due. Thank you for sharing this cabin and town with us. We will be back to experience as many seasons as we can.
My husband and I fully enjoyed the quiet and privacy. The house was clean, the kitchen well stocked and our surroundings were pleasant. Our only disappointment was not being able to locate private access to the river. We were confused when we made the reservation about Location of river access, whether the access was on the home site or on another property… The pictures told one story and the text another. Several times we used the directions on the kitchen wall and still could not locate access. Nonetheless we had a wonderful week and thank the Moores for sharing their special cabin in the woods. Nice house, great view from screen porch. The house was clean, comfortable and secluded. Getting in and out of the driveway was a little tricky due to the angle
We have stayed in many cabins in NC, Virginia and Tennessee over the years. The cabin was decorated beautifully, stocked better than any we've ever stayed in, and extremely clean. The king-sized bed was very comfortable, and the shower had great water pressure. The location was within 15 minutes to groceries, shopping and dining. The view of the mountain from the windows and the screen porch was beautiful. The owner was very prompt with communication. The area felt safe. With all those wonderful things, there were a couple of downsides to the property. Number one being that driveway. There had been some storms prior to our arrival but the driveway was very rough and very narrow. It was an adventure getting in and out each time. The hairpin turns into the drive and then again into the cabin was a challenge at first but negotiable. Secondly, the biggest disappointment to us was the river access. It was not marked clearly other than on a map with highlighter posted on the corkboard in the kitchen. First we attempted to walk down. After 15 minutes we decided to walk back up the trail. It was rough and steep. Not an easy hike and definitely not something you'd drag your kayak down. Next, we decided to drive down according to the map. Again, the road down was steep and rough. When we finally got to the river, there was a private property sign and it didn't look like the one in our picture. We didn't feel comfortable trespassing on someone else's land and risking getting stuck if the trail got worse. It would have made it a little more reassuring if there had been actual physical signs on the foot trail (1/2 mile longer!) or some other type of markers to let us know we were indeed on the right track. A four-wheeler would have definitely come in handy for the access. IF you are looking for a beautiful, secluded place that is also close to everything and you have a narrow 4-wheel drive vehicle, this may be the place for you. If you are looking for some kayaking or river access at the place you stay, we would recommend going elsewhere. The difficulties getting to the river just weren't worth it to us. The description: Secluded Cottage With Private River Access, Screened Porch, WiFi, And Netflix; should be revised to Secluded cottage with beautiful mountain view and screened porch; close to West Jefferson. It just should not be marketed as having private river access until or unless the trail is improved, marked, or both.
Nice and secluded, road was tough to get down but once you got the hang of it, it became pretty easy with 4wd with all the snow on it. Great place to stay.
This is a wonderful mountain getaway! There is river access, but the access is about a 6-minute hike through the woods. It was beautiful!
We really enjoyed our stay at Moore Cabin! The view from the back porch was amazing, from sun-up to sun-down! The location perfectly framed a mountain. My husband said the view looked like a Bob Ross painting. It was well-lit and screened. If we'd had our kids, they would have loved to play out there. Fans in the rooms are an important thing for us, and we were thankful each room had them. The house had great a/c and heat. The kitchen had everything we needed, though we didn't cook anything while we were there. We didn't even eat all our snacks, so we left some (sealed) behind. ? Toilet paper, paper towels, soaps, etc. were well-stocked, which was a nice change from every other rental we've ever stayed in! We didn't realize this and bought some on our first store trip. We left our inevitable extras. The ONLY things we lacked were a lighter and charcoal/wood to get the fire pit/grill going. Those easy things to grab from the Walmart that's 10 minutes away. Super convenient. Bunks in the kid room we're super cute. Hangers were available, which was great! There is really only one closet, and it's in the kid room. There's one stand of drawers in there, too. The master bedroom had an armoire, but I had trouble opening it, and didn't want to mess with it. This wasn't an issue for us, because we didn't have our kids with us. We just used that room for our clothes. A couple of notes my husband wanted to make: - They're serious about the driveway. If you go in winter/snow, you would need 4WD. We had a Jeep, and we were glad. A big SUV (which is what we have at home) would have been really difficult to navigate on the driveway. I felt like I anticipated this with the pictures and description, but he wanted to make sure I mentioned it. The road in is bumpy. - The description said most people like to bring their own water for cooking and drinking. Definitely do that, unless you're used to well water. If you're a city water gal/guy, the washer is great, but you'll want to rewash when you get home. - The sheets on the king bed could have used deeper pockets, because they popped off a bunch. Our stay was great. We would definitely go back. We went at the perfect time to see the leaves change. We saw deer and a red fox near the cabin.
My family had an amazing stay! We spent almost the whole time on the huge screened in porch. Has a great view of the mountain and was the perfect place for morning coffee. B/c it has a TV we were able to snuggle under blankets and watch movies under the stars. To get to West Jefferson State park for a nice hike was only a 15 min drive and downtown West Jefferson was a dream and only about a 15 min drive. Will definitely come back!
