Stayed Apr 2, 2026The property itself was decent. The surrounding area, however, was downright post-apocalyptic. Burned out homes and cars, roving packs of wild dogs, chickens walking in the middle of the road, men urinating in their front yards, piles of garbage was measured 10 or 15 feet high, dilapidated homes and trailers - it was unlike anything I've ever seen. The unpaved road to the property was undriveable and damaged my car. We declined to stay at the property because of these surroundings; I did not feel safe there. Honestly it's horrifying that VRBO approved this property for listing. I will never use your site again. What a huge disappointment.

Stayed Mar 2, 2026The road up to the place was as advertised, bumpy and steep in spots, but no problem with an AWD vehicle. The house felt comfortable, nice couch to lounge on. The kitchen was adequately stocked with items needed for cooking. The fireplace was nice to have to take the chill off at the end of the day. More psychological than anything else for a person who loves sitting by a fire. Close to Harpers Ferry which is what we wanted. The host met us with the keys and showed us around upon arrival.

Stayed Sep 19, 2025I struggle with writing this review. We didn't spend more than five minutes in the house before deciding we were uncomfortable in this neighborhood and declined to stay there. The listing was accurate as for the cottage description, mountain view, and rutted roads (ok, the roads were perhaps worse than described but not impassable). For two female friends on a girl's weekend getaway, the drive through the community was uncomfortable from the perspective of surrounding properties. As previous reviews stated, we passed multiple broken down trailers and homes, many with doors, windows, or walls missing, exteriors littered with discarded items. Despite the owner's assurance that he had never had problems with the neighbors, our gut feeling of discomfort and fear drove our decision to leave for a hotel. While some would love the location and proximity to the AT, others might find, as we did, that the surrounding community was far outside their comfort zone.

Stayed Sep 1, 2025Very nice property, older and a little quirky, but clean and very well equipped. The kitchen had everything needed to cook full meals. We only used one bed but it was very comfortable. There is no ice maker which wasn't a problem for the two of us, but a larger group that uses a lot of ice might want to pick up a bag on the way in. Also, the directions to the coffee pot are in the red binder. The roads to the property were a little hairy, but we followed the directions that the property manager provided and had no problems. Although I would recommend a truck/SUV, we saw several locals with sedans and the Amazon delivery van several times so not as bad as you would think. My only real recommendation would be to invest is some high deck chairs that you can see over the railing. Also, it is not really handicapped accessible, because of a couple of steps in the house and outside, but it if you have minor mobility issues it is easy to navigate. We had a great time and would stay again.

Stayed Aug 7, 2025You can't beat the mountain top view! The house was very nice and clean. Good cell reception and wifi. Amazing fire pit! Helpful and friendly owners. Getting up the mountain is a little rough, so a truck, Jeep, or SUV is ideal. But it's worth it!! No more than 20 or 30 minutes to every attraction, restaurant, or store. I would live here permanently if I could.

Stayed Jun 19, 2025The house was quiet and comfortable. The view was amazing. But I will say the road getting up to the house is no joke. Definitely would want an SUV or bigger. I would worry about a car dragging. Pretty steep lots of ruts. The owner was very nice. The house was stocked with plenty of toilet paper and paper towels, and trash bags. There was also a few other things that you can tell he wants to say to be comfortable. I would go back for sure.

Stayed Jun 5, 2025We had the best view ever! The home was clean and we were able to have a fire one night which was great. I will say a vechicle that sits up off the ground is preferred due to the condition of the mountain road, we had an SUV and were glad because of the road condition. It was WONDERFUL!

Stayed May 26, 2025The house was spacious and well maintained. My son and I stayed for three nights. There was easily room to accommodate six or more. We had two days of rain, but it didn’t slow us down. We toured Harpers Ferry and did some hiking on the AT. Host provided everything you’d expect. Kitchen utensils, BBQ grill, blankets/bedding, TV, wi-fi, and ALL CLEAN and ready to use. There is a reason the view is in this property’s title. Mountain Top View is way up there.

Stayed May 14, 2025Richard was an excellent host at this cozy cottage with an amazing view. He met us when we arrived and explained a number of items, also had a guest information book which was helpful.Due to storms and fallen trees, power was out for half a day but Richard apologized, and checked in with us during the week. WiFi is good, beds were comfortable, and the cottage is much more spacious than I expected. We spent a lot of time on the deck (table and chairs provided), and enjoyed the relaxing environment. The cottage is walking distance to the Appalachian Trail, which was a bonus.Richard provided detailed info on access to the cottage; his directions provided a less steep route, so follow his instructions. There are some properties that have abandoned vehicles, but Richard mentioned that and that wasn’t an issue for us. In general, we were pleased with our stay and would consider visiting again in the future.

Stayed Dec 30, 2024My friends and I always go away for New Years. We try someplace new every year. This lovely mountain top home did not disappoint. It was spacious, clean and equipped. It was very cold (because it was January). Did some snow tubing close by. The drive up and down the mountain was a little nerve sketchy, but took it slow as I was not driving a SUV and it was fine. It was very quiet. We had an enjoyable time.

Stayed Apr 24, 2025This property was tough to get to, as it's literally on the side of a mountain and you must drive up unpaved roads. The house is relatively small and looks like it has not been deep-cleaned in awhile with the bathroom having gunk in between the tiles and the kitchen appliances were covered in dust. The bedrooms are extremely small and the water heater keeps your water warm for maybe 5 minutes before your shower is cold. Will not be staying here again.

Stayed Dec 5, 2024Beautiful view. Check in process was easy, clear instructions for check in and out. Host was great at communication and quick response. Location is difficult to find but not impossible, if following the instructions from the host. Not incredibly local to town but a quick 15 min drive will have you in the nearest. Tons of activities at the house, was unaware it was in a neighborhood it was in but still quaint. Would definitely recommend!

Stayed Dec 13, 2024We had a great time! The property was beautiful, and Richard is a great host. The roads leading there are not paved, and have a lot of pot holes and bumps, and you’re going up a mountain, so there is a steep incline. We navigated them fine in our Honda Odyssey, it just took some extra time and care. The home itself was very clean and comfortable. There were plenty of supplies for cooking, and grocery delivery from Walmart was easy to set up ahead of our arrival. We did order DoorDash our first night, and that delivery also went well.

Stayed Nov 27, 2024Thanksgiving weekend with nearby family. Cottage is spacious and clean. Great fireplace and very comfy beds. Turkey dinner for 4 was a delight. Located on top of the mountain overlooking Charles Town. The host’s recommendation of an SUV or more is correct. The uphill road is gravel with ruts but not treacherous. Cabin in the woods is a great description.

Stayed Oct 21, 2024Place was as described, worked great for me. House has good amenities, incl good wi-fi. No bugs seen (I expect to see a few in older places a bit out in the woods). Yard was clean and clear, serious fire pit available, and view was great, just as advertised. Things that might make this place not for everyone. - Last few streets are gravel and bumpy, my tires slipped a bit going up the hills, so a bit of an adventure the first time up and down, but I never felt anxious. - Neighborhood might be called ugly by some. I cdn't decide if it was ugly or beautiful, but liked it. It has mix of tidy small houses with clean well-lit outdoor areas (like this listing), and broken down houses surrounded by overgrown grasses and bushes, and complete disaster area junk yards that seem unlivable yet a dog barks from within one of the 3 scattered 1970's campers. So some people will love this for the stories latent behind each property's unique version of a no trespassing sign, others will like it as an escape from the bland texture of so many suburban developments. But others might, even with no snobbiness, just think it's ugly.

Stayed Aug 26, 2024The house is very clean, spacious, and comfortable--very well-stocked with everything you need. It's quiet and peaceful all around, and the view from the back is stunning! It's very close by foot to the Appalachian Trail, and a short drive to Harper's Ferry National Park. The only issue we had was with the general area; immediately around the house was fine, but walking up and down the road was unpleasant. It was also very difficult for us to drive in and out without scratching the bottom of our car on the gravel road; don't go there in a standard sedan, as you'll need a somewhat higher car. But overall we really enjoyed our stay, thank you!

Stayed Jul 25, 2024We travel A LOT and this is one of the cleanest rentals we have stayed in. Check in was unusual the owner met to give us the key. This was unsettling as we were three women traveling alone in a strange place. There is a lock box on the door so I am unsure why it was necessary to personally hand over the key. Sadly there is a lack of transparency that needs to be addressed. Per the listing there are old vehicles in neighboring yards, that is akin to putting lipstick on a pig. You basically take an ATV trail through a junk yard up a mountain. I would NEVER attempt to take a car up the road. Its unfair of the owner to assume everyone would be safe doing so. I understand they are used to roads like this but someone who isn't familiar with navigating a gravel road with giant ruts gullies and hairpin turns would struggle to make the trek up safely. I drove an SUV up and it was rough. It was apparent the owner wants you to come in a certain way because it takes you by less alarming properties. GPS is a more direct route but it's STEEP! You are never more than 50yds from an ancient abandoned camper with no doors or windows that someone actually lives in. Not to mention the 100s of sick looking feral cats or emaciated dogs tethered to the campers. The surrounding properties are visually disturbing and somewhat terrifying but the house across the road is newer. I understand that some are things the owner has no control over, however do your due diligence and read the reviews.
