The charm and the mountainside location of Red Gate Cottage make for a cozy retreat for couples, a small family or anyone passionate about nature.
The location and setting of this rustic cottage can’t be beat! So close to the village and the Mohonk Preserve that everything is within 15 minutes. We enjoyed the local farm markets and a great CSA came with our rental. We spent an entire summer here and were never bored. The cottage is inviting and well stocked with everything you need.
Location and weekend was great! The property owner was attentive. We had a hiccup checking in and didn't receive the welcome packet info, but luckily was quickly corrected...property was close to all and easily accessible. Smart TV could be improved/updated, but we really liked the house and owner! thanks!
A light-filled and gracious place. The convenience of the location can't be beat, while still being up the mountain. Close to town, the Preserve, and centrally located in the Hudson Valley.
Great location for hiking the state park and Mohonk Preserve. The beds were comfortable and the kitchen had everything. Loved our stay in the area!
We had a wonderful stay here. The house was clean, comfortable and had everything we needed. We did have difficulty with a couple of the appliances and the TV so could have used instructions on those, but this was a very minor inconvenience
This property is lovely and located on a beautiful road just outside New Paltz. The house is really charming and decorated in a lovely combination of modern and rustic. The kitchen is large and easy to accommodate people and food prep and cleaning up. The beds were clean and comfy. The host was easy to contact and attended to our questions very quickly. The weather was exceedingly, unseasonably hot while we stayed there, but the cabin remained surprisingly and comfortably cool without A/C. Some not so positive things- the listing does not say anything about entertaining at the site. We were a group of 5 renting for the university graduation weekend. We intended to host a small gathering to celebrate and let the host know our plans. Her response was surprising. In the listing it states that the kitchen is perfect for hosting family and friends (which it is) but the host is not amenable to this, at all. We planned for 10 extra adult guests for a simple meal. Three hours. She shut down the idea and contacted lawyers who suggested she cancel the reservation without refund, increase the security deposit and that we obtain a separate liability insurance policy for $500,000 in order to host this small gathering. This was shocking and put a total damper on our special weekend. We rescheduled for another location so as to avoid any litigation for a small dinner party of adults. Word to the wise, this place is lovely and comfortable, but the owner is somewhat interventionist and, in my opinion, overly reactive. Don’t have anyone come over if you stay!
Great Spot for a weekend of hiking and relaxing. Cozy home with woodstove and open kitchen. Great location between New Paltz and the Moohonk Preserve.
While the location is perfect, about 2 miles away from the mountain house and close to good places to eat, was disappointed with the overall cleanliness of the house…mouse droppings found under the sink and on the bath towels in the bathroom…had to dry ourselves off with paper towels after showering…water in sink in bathroom and kitchen were freezing cold, thankfully the water in the shower was warm…there were stains on the sheets in the bedroom, cobwebs behind the door in the kitchen, no curtains on the windows…heat on the first floor was essentially nonexistent and while there is a wood burning stove there to use, have not had any experience using it and so felt uncomfortable using it…we were there during the snow storm this past weekend and they did provide us with someone to shovel the driveway which was really nice…they do have utensils and appliances there to use as well as some refrigerator items to use, but felt weird to use them as seeing there were mouse droppings there…the owner herself is nice but felt mislead in terms of the description of the property…it definitely does have potential as other renters have posted in their reviews, but definitely some major cleanliness concerns
This property is a cozy place for a single or couple to enjoy rustic living in the mountains with great hiking nearby. However, we were a family of four with two kids, age 9 and 7, and were disappointed. It requires the wood stove to keep the down stairs warm which is nice, however the stove is located in a high traffic area so we had to barricade it to keep our kids from accidentally walking/falling into it. There were artwork and books lying about that were not kid friendly and upset my daughter. However, the toys available were greatly entertaining and appreciated. The location is on a busy road so letting the kids play outside was worrisome, though I agree with other reviewers, it was not loud. There were no window coverings in the bedrooms which was not ideal for kids privacy. The laundry room required moving boxes to access the machines and no detergent or sheets were offered. With kiddos having the machines on vacation is one of the perks versus a hotel. I can see the cabin is special and has interesting character and would recommend it as a rustic hiking cabin, however I would not recommend to a family with young kids.
We wanted to get away for a long weekend with friends. The house was clean and did not disappoint! We enjoyed the wood burning stove and cooking in the kitchen. Great location. Although we didn’t hike this visit, we had a great time!
