Tucked away in the heart of Deal's charming conservation area, The Old Smoke House is a characterful cottage, perfect for couples or small families looking to escape to the Kent coast. This centuries-old cottage is full of quirks and charm, with original features, painted floorboards and cosy corners that make it feel like a home away from home.

Downstairs is a living room with a cosy wood burner for chilly evenings, a pretty wallpaper dining area and a small but well-equipped kitchenfor relaxed holiday cooking. French doors from the kitchen lead to the sunny and private rose-walled garden, perfect for morning coffee or a glass of wine after a day of exploring. On the first floor is a light and inviting twin bedroom and a family bathroom with a bath and overhead shower. On the second floor is the double bedroom, which has a lovely view over the rooftops and gardens of Middle Street and out to the sea beyond. There's also the option to have a sofa bed set up in the sitting room for teens or occasional guests. Your four legged friend is very welcome.

The location couldn't be better, just a minute's walk from Deal's pebble beach and promenade, where you can stroll along the seafront with old fishing boats or take in the views from the end of the pier. The town itself is full of independent shops, bars and restaurants. Browse the antiques at Mileage, pick up some gifts from Barkend, grab a fresh sourdough loaf from Arno & Co and vegetables from Merchant of Relish and enjoy dinner at The Blue Pelican, Frog & Scot or Victuals.

There's plenty to explore nearby too. Walk south along the coast to Kingsdown, past beach huts and pastel coloured seafront houses and Walmer Castle, a former home of the Queen Mother. Further afield, the mediaeval town of Sandwich offers quiet riverside walks and traditional pubs. Or hop on a train to Canterbury to visit the famous Cathedral. If you are looking for a truly British seaside day out, Broadstairs is just a short drive away with its sandy beaches and ice cream parlours. The trendy town of Margate is also nearby, home to the Turner Contemporary and the retro amusement park Dreamland.

Very pretty and comfortable and on a lovely street handy for the seafront and high st. My twin room had two good-sized beds and didn't remotely feel like a 'kid's room'. The only bad point was that we couldn't get any hot water out of the overhead shower, but we managed with the hand-held one.

A sweet cottage in a good location. Generally well-equiped. Small welcome gift appreciated. However, customers need to know about low beams in living area _ quite a hazard. Outside space very neglected and full of weeds. Outside furniture rusty and uninviting and could be the cause of grazed legs, although cushions are provided. General waste bin had not been emptied for weeks. Had to contact customer service, who then organised removal promptly. No information about recycling or waste collection days in cottage information folder. Previous visitors' used towels uncollected in bathroom. Attic room windows need attention - have to be either closed or fully wide open as no catch to allow a small opening. Blinds blow and bang. Curtains might work better.

We had a great break at the Old Smokehouse with the bonus of plenty of spring sunshine. We loved the character of the property and it is very comfortable with a well equipped kitchen. The team at Keepers Cottage were helpful as always, letting us have a late checkout. I had not factored in that the clocks were changing on our departure day and we lost an hour! There are steep stairs in the property and some low door frames, just to be aware.

We loved staying at the Old Smoke House in Deal. It's a fantastic historic house in a fantastic historic area of Deal. Other-worldly, quirky and cosy, yet with all the modern comforts you need like central heating, dishwasher and washing machine. A quiet location but only a stone's throw from the sea and the high street, Middle Street transports you right back to a different time in history entirely. Fantastic. Who needs Downton Abbey when you got the real Deal! 'Modern' Deal is a very lively and friendly town. There is something for everybody here. The seaside, shopping galore, eateries and historic pubs aplenty, nature, culture and history are all at your doorstep and we liked the overall atmosphere of the place very much. The team of Keepers Cottages were responsive and very kind. The lovely christmas tree and decorations were the icing on the cake. Thanks for having us. Greetings from Holland. Ton, Gina and Juulke the dog.

This is a quirky old cottage situated in a beautiful and quiet part of Deal, very close to the beach and cycling/walking opportunities. We enjoyed many walks, cycle rides and swims as a result. We enjoyed our stay and were not too fazed by the steep stairs and low ceilings as we were expecting them. In general the cottage is well equipped and comfortable - lovely bath, soft bedding and towels and a good supply of kitchen equipment. Items such as washing machine and dishwasher have been cleverly incorporated into the limited space in the cottage. The top bedroom in particular is a lovely space, with the bonus of a delightful sea view. The notable exception in terms of comfort was the sofa as the seat cushions have been replaced by large feather pillows that soon flatten out onto the frame. It really was deeply uncomfortable after about 5 minutes of initial comfort. This can be easily remedied I'm sure by replacing the sofa or seat cushions. We would stay here again if this issue was resolved. We very much appreciated the speedy response from Keeper's Cottages when we contacted them with a couple of queries early on.

Beautiful period cottage, carefully modernised and just a stone’s throw from the sea, near to great pubs, shops, cliff walks, plus the excellent rail link. We enjoyed being car free! We loved the sea view from the top bedroom, dazzling in the morning, and the patio for breakfast. Hot sunny weather and daily sea swims were icing on the cake.

So lucky with the weather in Deal….. cottage rather disappointing. There is limited head room in several areas - couldn’t stand up in the double bedroom ! The furniture and fittings are exhausted and the cottage felt grubby throughout - shame ……

Absolutely love this house. We rented it for 5 weeks and enjoyed every moment. Great location, bags of character, and in generally good condition. Few niggles - it needs new crockery and the knives are blunt, but overall highly recvommended.

We had a lovely stay in Deal and the cottage was very pretty and historic, but we found the low ceilings and spiral stair case a bit challenging.
