Stayed Jul 19, 2025First of all, Dennis was a great communicator, calling before and during our trip. He also left excellent recommendations about things to do in the area. The house is just as described, tucked away in the woods and close to the water's edge, and it has all of the necessities that you would need (although we did use the couple of rolls of TP that we brought with us). The local Shop N Save is only 15-20 minute aways, but we stopped at the Walmart Ellsworth on the way in to get groceries. This is Dennis and Helen's home, so expect it to feel homey with their photos, books, and knick-knacks. While there we explored the area (Bar Harbor, Acadia, Lubec & whale tour, Schoodic), and we also had quiet days at the cabin. We spent most of our days outside, sitting on the rocks, finding crabs, kayaking, watching the bald eagles, seals & lobster and fishing boats, taking local hikes and picking wild blueberries on Pigeon Hill and the nature reserve. The location was the best of both worlds, able to get to destinations quickly as well as staying put and enjoying the peace and quiet found at Bar Island.

Stayed Jun 28, 2025I rented this cottage for my parents and this is their review: We stayed for two weeks in late June/July 2025. The home is in a beautiful location and the host communicates clearly and promptly. However, we would not recommend this property for renters mainly due to the lack of storage space. Most closets, drawers, and shelving were already full of the owner’s belongings, leaving very little room for our things—especially in the bathroom and bedroom. Lighting throughout the home was also quite dim, making it hard to unpack or get ready. While the kitchen had some counter space, most cabinets were packed with too many dishes, spices (mostly duplicates), and pantry items left by previous guests. On the plus side, the bed was comfortable, and laundry facilities worked well once we figured out how to turn on the water. The garbage cans were also in the basement - making that nonsensical to use.We didn’t raise these concerns during our stay, as it felt like the space isn’t really set up for guests’ comfort. In summary: great location and host, but better suited to an owner’s personal use than to renters looking for a comfortable, organized stay.

Stayed Jun 21, 2025My husband and I stayed at the Magee Cabin for our first anniversary, and it couldn’t have been more perfect. We love a peaceful, private setting with access to nature, chances to see wildlife, and a home that feels warm, welcoming, and well thought out. This cabin delivered all of that and more. The kitchen was stocked with spices, oils, coffee, tea, and every tool we needed to cook. There were even extra blankets and bedding, making it easy to stay cozy. The hosts were kind, responsive, and never intrusive. Dennis contacted us before our trip to help us prepare and answered all our questions. Since we were flying with only carry-ons, it meant a lot to know what would be there—and even more when we arrived to find the specific items we’d asked about already stocked. The cabin was the perfect home base for rest and reset, and still let us explore the incredible sights, smells, and flavors unique to Downeast Maine. One of our favorite moments was listening to the seals as they fished just off the bank—so peaceful and special. We feel incredibly blessed that the Magees choose to share their home with guests; it’s a rustic cabin, not a polished resort experience—charming, comfortable, and just what we were hoping for.

Stayed Oct 12, 2024What a perfect Maine hideaway this property is; exactly what we sought for our family trip. The cottage is a quintessential Maine, log structure finished in knotty pine, beautifully decorated and appointed. The Hosts, Dennis and Helen, have thoughtfully provided everything and more that is needed for a week of exploring the area or relaxing and cooking fabulous fresh seafood meals. They had even, knowing we were looking forward to cooking fresh lobster, set out a large steaming pot and utensils for our preparation. They have provided all the maps, books and brochures you will need to explore, parks, trails, and Downeast gems to see and to really know Downeast Maine. Chipman's Wharf for the freshest seafood; Ray's Meats for an old-fashioned butchery; bakeries and restaurants in Milbridge and nearby. Situtated just a few miles from downtown Milbridge, in the pine woods, with seating and firepit at the shore and a close-up view of Narraguagus Bay. Barbecue a meal or just sit and watch birds, sealife and lobster boats plying the waters. Many hiking trails nearby to enjoy - Pigeon Hill, Petit Manaan views, McClellan Park; Winterharbor (cute village and ferry to Mt. Desert Island), Schoodic Peninsula. Also easy trips of an hour or less to Acadia NP, Machias (Yes, Helen's does have the most wonderful wild blueberry pie) and beyond. But coming home to this VRBO was truly comforting and SO peaceful we hated to leave.

Stayed Aug 31, 2024We felt at home here. LOVED the solitude. We were close enough to enjoy the area, yet loved just relaxing on the porch or having a fire by the water. We've gradually moved further north from Bar Harbor and just love it. Looking forward to returning. Great owners!!!

Stayed Jul 20, 2024What a wonderful stay we had at this property. All the amenities are pitch perfect for us and the location and area are what we always look for in a vacation home. It is a short drive to hiking, kayaking, as well as groceries. The screened porch makes any weather tolerable. We find complete relaxation here. You will not be disappointed.

Stayed Aug 19, 2023We had a great stay at the Magees’ cabin on Bar Island. Dennis called after we arrived to make sure we were settling in okay. Their cabin is so comfortable- kitchen had everything we needed to prepare our own meals, screen porch was great for relaxing any time. Lots of personal touches made it very welcoming. We enjoyed visiting the rocks and watching the tides, seagulls, shore birds and lobster boats, and walking on the island road. We visited local towns and businesses (recommend Ray’s Meat Market, Chipman’s Wharf, the Knotty Lobster, Robertson’s Sea Tours), and Schoodic Point. The Magees provide lots of suggestions for things to see and do. Great value, so glad we found this one!
