Hope Town, Abacos
A Hope Town Settlement Icon
Nestled in the historical settlement, Clifford Sawyer House is the result of construction that began in 1868. This was the home of Elizabeth Sawyer, the granddaughter of Wayannie Malone. Hope Town was founded in 1785 by Wayannie – a widow from Charleston, who fled the United States with her four children for safe refuge from the Revolutionary war. Today, the Clifford Sawyer House is considered to be one of the very first homes built in Hope Town and stands as a testament to an age and style gone by. Picket fences, porches, and clapboard accents make it a prime example of quaint and colonial architecture. The house has been completely renovated in 2021, but still maintains much of its charm and decades of history.
This adorable vintage cottage is designed with high-end furniture and features throughout. Great efforts have been made to provide modern conveniences while respecting the original character and charm. Guests will love the dipping pool nestled in the lush backyard setting. The home is located in a quiet residential neighborhood on the settlement’s north side. Just a short 1-2 blocks stroll from the beach, harbour, shopping, restaurant, bike rentals, and incredible views of the landmark lighthouse.
The Property includes 4 total bedrooms and 3 baths in the following layout:
King-size bed in the main bedroom, Queen-size bedroom in second bedroom, and 3 full-sized built-in beds in the loft. The separate studio includes an additional Queen-size bed, bathroom, and kitchenette.
The home features central HVAC, smart TVs in each room, Wi-Fi, and an up-to-date kitchen. Ship-lap walls, custom cabinetry, and large showers enhance the cottage feel. There are also 3 porches to enjoy the views of the manicured yard and park.
Outside the home, guests will love the beautiful dipping pool, which is surrounded by a lush garden and the ocean waves in surround sound. The yard is fully fenced, giving you a sense of seclusion and privacy and includes a grill for cooking out. There is a fully enclosed outdoor shower with hot and cold water, great for rinsing off after a day at the beach. The home is located across the street from Taylor Park, which is a bonus for kids.
This was one of the best vacation rentals we have ever stayed at. The owners are great people and the house has as much charm as you can fit under one roof! Cant beat this location too. Will definitely be back soon
We enjoyed one of our most memorable vacations ever thanks for the incredible hospitality and the beautiful, charming, historic Clifford Sawyer home. My husband & I were joined by one of our older son's and his wife, as well as one of our college-aged son's and his long-time girlfriend. We had ample living space and beautifully appointed bedrooms, including one separate studio adjoining the property for our married son. It was so close to everything, and the stunning Atlantic Ocean is less than a 200 yards away and is a delight to listen to in the evening while sitting on the side covered porch. Can't recommend this home enough!!!
This is the perfect location! The host is extremely clean, well taken care of, and handled 6 adults with more than enough room. This is the best hidden gem on the island!
The house was great. Perfect location for our family, which has a big range of ages. Cozy with all of the amenities needed. Perfect “homemade” for our daily adventures. Elizabeth Scott was VERY responsive, and helpful.
United Yacht sales is so proud to have been apart of the fishing tourney to benefit the Lighthouse. The house was perfect! Comfortable, well appointed. Better than the pictures. We will definitely be back!
Loved our stay at the historical sawyer house. For a house with history, they’ve done a great job with upkeep. Modern and clean furnishings and very clean. The house was kept very cool and AC worked great. The upstairs worked really well for our three kids with three separate beds. Would be great to add a dresser up there or extra shelves—no clothes storage for the three people the room accommodates. Location: We enjoyed being so close to the lower public dock for access to the marina water ferry and behind the basketball courts. The house had a pickle ball net and we were able to set it up on the courts a few times. Having a pool to cool off in as a break from the beach was great too. The house had plenty of outdoor shade too. Finally, it’s right next to Vernon’s grocery store. The downside to the location is that it is a bit of a walk from your cart parking. Didn’t bother us, might bother some. Also missed having a dryer. It’s so humid nothing dries. With 8 people, towels and bathing suits were hanging everywhere all the time and still wouldn’t dry out. We would come back!
We had a ball the heart of Hope Town due in large part to this charming, well-appointed home. The interiors have been stylishly updated and the outdoors have been designed to make indoor and outdoor living truly seamless. Just steps away from Vernon's Grocery, we had all the banana bread, coconut break, key lime and chocolate silk pies at our finger tips! The owner was extremely responsive to any want or need and even helped with local recommendations while we were planning our trip that we were having a hard time sourcing ourselves. We LOVED our stay at the Clifford Sawyer House and will definitely stay again!
Great location and house. Loved the back yard!
Excellent
Great property in a fine location.
I was absolutely in love with the house the second we walked in! The design and decor made it feel like home without that overly beachy feel. The upstairs for the kids was spot on. We could not get them down for hours when we arrived. The location was great with the park right across the street and only a couple houses down from Vernon’s grocery and Munchies which we visited daily for ice cream. We can’t wait to come back in summer!!!
The house was perfect. Great location, very comfortable with a good island feel. The upstairs and dip pool were perfect for our kids, and we had good space to entertain friends. Would definitely recommend and go back.
We just loved our stay. We have been coming to Hope Town for the last 8 years and have enjoyed many locations on the island but this place was just the BEST! The home was beautifully redone although we were only in there to cook and sleep. We spent all day in the backyard and pool when we were not at the beach or on the boat. I highly recommend this place.
The Clifford Sawyer house is nothing short of PERFECTION! The house is well equipped with everything you would need, and decorated with the utmost style. The splash pool in the backyard is such a treat after a long day out exploring the cays. You can walk to everywhere from here…beach, grocery, restaurants, clinic, straw market. But I would still rent a golf cart so you can get to the south end of the island. We were able to rent a dock at the end of the street for our boat, which was a huge plus. I cannot recommend this house enough! Elizabeth and their caretaker were easy to communicate with and we can’t wait to visit again.
Amazing house in a perfect location on Hope Town!!! Everything we needed was there. House was extremely clean and beautiful!!! Highly recommend this property!!
We were the first renters of this property, and we could not have been happier with what we found. The home is beautifully decorated, and all of its independent spaces lend itself to everyone in the group being able to slow down and relax! The kitchen had everything we needed and the loft area for the kids was so perfect, they hardly wanted to come down! The location is super close to the lower dock and has easy access to all areas on the island. Thanks for an amazing trip!!
