Artemis house - its name taken after the ancient Greek goddess of the mountains and the forests - is a delightful stone cottage of unique character and architecture. Located at the foothills of the White Mountains, in an authentic Cretan village called Melidoni, it offers great mountain views and a good view to the renowned Georgioupolis beach.
This absolutely charming house has a very cosy interior made out of stone and wood in warm and fresh colours. The atmosphere of the house is veryrelaxing and the cypress trunks of the roof leave a fine nature smell. The floor is wooden in both levels of the house. The bedroom is in the upper level, providing a fine wooden double bed and offering a view to the valley and Georgioupolis beach. The beautiful kitchen and living room are in the main level. The shower and WC in playful colours are in the main level too. Wooden cupboards are spacious both in kitchen and bedroom.
There are many interesting walks in the area, a gauge to visit, and of course more advanced walks up the mountain tops. Its an ideal place for nature lovers. We offer tips, guidebooks and a detailed map with all the walks. And of course the district of Apokoronas where the house is located is famous for the archaeological site of Aptera, byzantine churches and monasteries, Kalyves sandy beaches, and traditional tavernas in picturesque villages of Vamos, Armeni, Stylos, Fres and others.
From Melidoni, where the house is located, you can easily access and explore both Chania city and Rethymnon city, as it is less than a 30 minutes’ drive from Chania Venetian port, museums and city life and less than 40 minutes from Rethymnon medieval city as well. The long beaches where mainstream tourism goes to are also 15-20 minutes away from this quiet retreat. So, you are close to the main tourist scene in a unique tranquil location.
Besides the maps and guide books, in the villas you will find a welcome pack including basic dairy products (milk and butter), local bread and cheese, thyme honey and olive oil.
Bed linen are changed weekly while extra towels are stored inside the house for your convenience. The house is cleaned weekly.
Please note that the Greek government has introduced a new tax fee, the Climate Resilience fee, which is €15 per day for summer house rentals. We are obliged to collect this fee during your stay and prior to your departure.

If you are seeking a secluded, quiet stay in authentic Crete White Mountains foothills, this is the spot for you! Beautiful stone villa with gorgeous windows. Very clean and property was accurately listed. The owners were very helpful to guide us there and also gave great advice and shared knowledge about where to go on Crete. They also had some food stocked for us which was really appreciated especially able to have a coffee or tea with milk and toast with cheese or honey the next morning! We were there during a short heat wave so it was hot. We had dinner in Fres as suggested and it was like having a home cooked/family authentic Greek meal on a beautiful courtyard & had we not stayed here, we most likely wouldn’t have made it up to Fres and it was incredible. For those who love this type of travel like we do, this is a great place.

The place is located in a beautiful hilltop with a great view. Inside it is equipped with a decent kitchen. The host is lovely. However it has no internet so you have to rely on a local phone network which is not great because you are in the mountains. Just something to know beforehand. I had to work and had to go to Kalyves when I had meetings. But other than that we enjoyed the great views and the small villages in the area.

Pretty traditional house, edge of village, wonderful views. Comfortable for two people. Good shady parking, which is a definate plus. Lovely terrace and a little balcony overlooking sea and mountains, for tea, breakfast or apéro. Our second visit to this area, not disappointed.

We loved our stay in this magical mountain retreat. The charming house was beautiful inside and out. Very clean and comfortable. The secluded peaceful setting was so relaxing. We had a spectacular view of the full moon rising over the mountains. Our hosts, Stavros and Tatiana, were the best! Stavros is very knowledgeable about all there is to do and see on Crete.

It was really nice up there in Melidoni in this marvelous solid stone house with a bright appearance and a tasteful interior. The bedroom's view is just amazing and Stavros and Tatiana were really nice (they welcomed us with bread, yoghurt and cookies :) ) The location is perfect when you don't want to be in the overcrowded chaos of the near-beach villages. If you like hiking this is perfect since the mountains are just behind the house. If not, its not really far (20 minutes) to the beaches. Apokoronas is the name of the region and it remained much more authentic then the touristic regions near the coast.

A fantastic property for solo travellers or couples looking to get off the beaten track. The house has stunning views and is ideally situated to get to a range of locations across Western Crete. The house itself is lovely, nicely finished and spotlessly clean. Tatiana and Stavros are ideal hosts, providing excellent communication and a warm and friendly welcome. Thanks for a fantastic stay!
