A late 18th century former farmhouse located close to the coast. Spectacular setting for wildlife, this cottage is a gem, with its own tranquil gardens and woodland on a hillside near Cardoness Castle, with walks directly from the door. Little Boreland, is full of character and is an ideal holiday retreat for all ages from which to explore the beautiful, unspoilt Fleet Valley National Scenic Area. It is within a short stroll, 1/2 a mile, of the conservation town of Gatehouse of Fleet, with shops, cafés, restaurants, local arts and crafts, and the Mill on the Fleet Visitor Centre.

In 1951, Glencairn Balfour Paul saw the house from the road and fell in love with it. His brother Ian, a keen bird watcher and elder of the Kirk, lived there for twenty years from 1990, following which other family members now maintain the house and its grounds through holiday lets. It has caught the eye of many passing artists who have depicted the house and adjoining wood, including early 20th-century local artists such as A R Sturrock and A M Hotchkis. The Balfour Pauls found Little Boreland just magical.

There are sandy beaches and rocky coves along the coast while the hillier countryside is good for walking. Nearby the Galloway Forest Park, known for its starlit dark skies, has excellent cycle paths. There is so much to see and do with castles, prehistoric sites and specialist gardens, thanks to Galloway’s mild climate. Activities for children include Cocobean at Tywnholm, Loch Ken Activity Centre, Red Kites feeding station at Laurieston. There are ample opportunities for fishing, horse riding and golf. Nearby are many attractive towns including Kirkcudbright, the artists’ town, offering boat trips and art and craft shops; Castle Douglas, Scotland’s food town with many specialist shops and nearby Threave Castle and Gardens; Wigtown, Scotland’s national book town, and Creetown featuring the Gem Rock Museum.

Little Boreland was the perfect place for our family get-together of three generations. It is a very homely, welcoming and well-equipped house with plenty of space and sitting areas to enjoy the wildlife. Everything is provided for a comfortable stay, including books, OS maps and information to help explore the area. The house is in peaceful and secluded grounds but close to the village amenities.

We had a lovely time at Little Boreland. The property is full of character, clean, comfortable and cosy. It is in a beautiful location, with lots to see and do. The hosts were very helpful and we would definitely consider returning here.

Little Boreland is as near to perfect as you can get. The house, it's history, it's setting, are all outstanding. This was our second visit, and won't be our last. Locally, there is so much to do - walks, beaches, places to visit. It is just as satisfying to stay in and around the house watching windlife, and playing in the grounds. We were delighted with the friendly and helpful contact with both the owner and the caretaker. It accomodated our family of a couple, three single adults, and a 12 year old child very well. We were cosy and comfortable. We wished we could have stayed another week. All six of us would highly recommend Little Boreland. Review independently collected and verified by Reevoo

My finger hovered over the NO button in answer to would you recommend this property. This was a totally selfish gesture as I wanted to book Little Boreland again and not encourage other holiday makers to book it. I wanted it all to myself and when you visit you will see why. The house is a immaculately clean, well appointed, comfortable, with fantastic views and, of course, your very own wood. The travel and Covid safety instructions we received prior to our visit were concise and accurate. The house was clean as whistle, with the fires all laid. A holiday pack of goodies in the good size kitchen was on the worktop. The house abounds with original artworks and local information. Two good size bathrooms both with showers and one with a bath. One up one down. The down stairs shower room has a double size shower. Brilliant. One cannot ask for a more comfortable home to stay in. The garden and surrounding grounds offer a wide variety of birds, red deer and red squirrels. Feeders in the grounds and by the large panoramic patio bring in a colourful hord of birds. The BBQ worked overtime and with such a vista you will see why. Well, I can go on praising Little Boreland, and I suppose I should but I have just booked our 2021 holiday there. So now I really can say I do suggest you have a fantastic holiday and book it Review independently collected and verified by Reevoo

We had a lovely week at Little Boreland. The setting is fabulous and great for children - lots to explore. You are also a short journey to the charming Gatehouse of Fleet - nice beer garden at the Ship Inn, lovely park and useful shops. Fantastic beaches are not far away either. An excellent cottage on the outskirts of Gatehouse of Fleet in a semi woodland setting and feeling quite remote. Excellent for families although there's plenty of water close by if you have little ones.
