The Neighborhood:
The Village of Grand Traverse Commons, located one mile from downtown Traverse City, is formally known as The Traverse City State Hospital. In operation from 1885-1989, it was the third psychiatric hospital in Michigan. With its vast grounds of 135 acres of fruit trees, gardens, and farming livestock, all of which kept the institution fully self-sufficient. As of 2002, the Village of Grand Traverse Commons was established, reinventing and restoring the former hospital into a thriving hub for housing, gourmet restaurants, and boutique shops. With the properties scenic, vast landscape, hiking trails, and beautifully restored buildings preserving history, Kirkbride Hall is known for hosting events including weddings and receptions, concerts, fundraisers, along with hosting many community events throughout the year. Highly recommended is the Guided and Historic Building and Tunnel Tour hosted by The Village of Grand Traverse Commons.
Getting Around:
The Mercato (where a lot of shops and dining is located), Left Foot Charley's Earthen Ales, the bakery, and most everything is within walking distance.

Specifically came to see the commons
I had a wonderful stay here! The property was incredibly comfortable, extremely clean, had everything—a perfect location, and the village is very interesting! I enjoyed walking around the village area getting coffee and dinner.
No place to sit comfortably. Couch was a sleeper mattress with no back. Lighting was very dark for the evening and tv only got roju channels because we didn't have our own streaming. Had to take out our garbage but no unlocked dumpster so we had to take our garbage home with us.
I lived in Michigan for 50 years and have vacationed in Traverse City countless times and have always been interested in the State Hospital history and grounds. What a treat it was to be able to stay on site for a few nights. The Village is an amazing feat of restoration and should be a destination for all. The condo we stayed in was perfect-very clean, easy parking, comfortable sleeping arrangements, well stocked kitchen, linens, great host and all that stuff! We will definitely stay again!
Carrie was awesome in communication especially when my taxi dropped me off in the wrong location at midnight. She guided me to the proper spot via text. The space was very clean, spacious and best of all within walking distance to Cordia’s front entrance for visiting my relative. The place is updated beautifully, functionally and ease of entrance. Well done!
Great cool condo that was very clean. Lots of places to visit that are close and walking distance.
Loved being able to stay in a historical location with easy access to fantastic dining.
Property was so clean and comfortable! We walked around to everything! Property contact was very attentive and nice. We will be back!
Perfect location and very clean. Host had great communication.
The property was great, and the location was perfect. We were there for just one night. There are plenty of restaurants nearby. We would stay here again.
The property is super cute and has everything you need. We loved the location, Earthen Ales in the backyard, shopping within walking distance. Quiet area with easy access to everything we wanted to see and do.
Very clean and great location, close to down town Travers City. They Condo and the ajoining community / commons had a lot to offer right on site (walking distance).
Really cool location at the Grand Traverse Commons. Very unique. We loved it.
This residence was clean and the owner was very attentive! She updated us through the entire process on how to check in and check out. Highly recommend and would stay again!
