The two things I wished I had known were: the wifi is unreliable. I tried to make a brief appearance on Zoom calls for work and it would not support that (it's just a T Mobile cell hotspot, and mostly had only 2 bars when we were there. on Speed Tests it clocked anywhere between 1MBps and 10Mbps - as luck would have it, 1 when I was trying to get through to work). I have Verizon on my phone and had only 1 bar at the house. I had told people I was available and so had to drive and sit in the local grocery store parking lot to make calls.
Great beautiful location! Wonderful family vacation! Peaceful and quiet!
The property was well maintained, clean and well appointed. Quiet and relaxing atmosphere. Just two this time but would be wonderful for a large family gathering
Easy to rent. Good communication with owners. Enjoyed the property. It is close to lake lure with out being in the busy part. Mirror lake was really peaceful and we pretty much had it to ourselves. It is in a nice gated community that is spread out. Awesome trip. 100% would book and stay here again. House has everything you need. The only negative mark I have is the size of the dock. It is tiny. Something tells me that it has to be though since they all seemed to be roughly the same size.
Overall a great experience. The house was as described. My only complaint was there were several roaches in the living room/kitchen area, and roach droppings in areas. The house was clean, however I hate roaches. The house probably could use pest control
We enjoyed 4 beautiful days at The Red Canoe. Being fall the leaves were turning and the view of the lake from the house and the dock were stunning. The canoes, kayaks and paddle boat provided were wonderful for paddling around the lake. The house was very comfortable and the kitchen was well stocked to cook our meals at the house. Fun game area in the basement. Enjoyed the hot tub. The loft area with the king bed was very comfortable. Since it doesn't have walls noise does carry up to the loft but we found if you turn on the bathroom fan it acted as white noise. We took a trip to Chimney Rock and explored Lake Lure but most of our time we enjoyed just relaxing, enjoying the peace and quiet and the beauty. We definitely would love to return.
The house was clean and comfortable with all the things we needed for a week stay. We loved the hot tub and walking down to the dock for fishing, swimming or canoeing. We explored the area as well and enjoyed the beach, mini golf, hiking and a few good dinners out. The grocery was pretty close as well so we could prepare several dinners at the house. All in all, a great vacation.
We enjoyed our time at the Red Canoe. The setting is awesome. Having a private lake with canoes and stand up paddle board to explore was really nice. The neighborhood is so quiet and beautiful. We loved the swimming hole, beach and waterfall. The house is very well equipped. My boys loved the Foosball table in the evenings and we made some great memories with our inability to play ping pong. The only thing I wish I would have realized before booking this home is that the master bedroom/bathroom is in the loft with no actual door. Between those that snore in the family and mixed sleep schedules (some stay up late, some get up early), the master bedroom can hear everything happening on the main level and vice versa. Otherwise we greatly enjoyed our stay and John and Madelyn were very nice to work with!
We spent three weeks searching for an awesome place to visit for our annual Family Vacation. When we saw Red Canoe with all its wonderful reviews and a long list of desirables we knew we had found it. We booked it and anxiously awaited our stay. The plan was to spend some time out in the backyard playing corn hole, swinging in the hammock, and throwing the frisbee around. We were excited to spend time swimming in the lake. The house offered everything you could ask for. That's the vacation we paid over a thousand dollars for. But here is what actually happended. The first thing when we arrived the dirt road just before the driveway had a huge mound of rock and dirt and gullies the full distance across the road. We should have been told we would need a 4x4. Every time we entered and exited the house we had to tear up the bottom of our car. On the third day a man in a tractor came and fixed the road. When we went inside we unpacked and headed downstairs to play ping pong and checkers. In moments it became apparent that the place was overrun with spiders. I don't mean we saw a few spiders and I'm whining. No, there were spiders everywhere. Everytime you moved a spider was fleeing. We decided it was probably just because that was the basement and it wouldn't be so bad upstairs. Later that night I was in the recliner and had grabbed a blue blanket from the closet. I fell asleep and woke up to see a giant black spider climbing across my lap. I screamed and threw the blanket away and watched in horror as three spiders scurried out from the blanket I was sleeping under!!! The next day we decided to get outside. Only the yard hadn't been mowed in a long time and it wasn't exactly the paradise we were hoping for. The Lake, ironically called Mirror Lake, was brown the entire trip. At first we hoped it was just from rain stirring it up but instead the entire time the lake looked like a giant mud puddle. I have pictures. Lake Lure, right down the road is clear and lovely but this isn't a place you would want to swim in. I could go on but I hate to be the one to leave a bad review. But the thing is, I hate even more that we wasted our Family Vacation on a spider infested house next to a giant mud puddle. Plus, all of that money for this type of experience. We have spent less and had far better vacations. We travel twice a year so we travel quite a bit and this is only the second bad review I have ever left. I wish someone had told me before we booked.
We stayed at the Red Canoe twice in the last year while attending Tryon International Equestrian Center events. My mother, wife, two kids, and other family members all loved the Red Canoe's convenience to Tyron, clean house, hot tub, private dock, canoes, paddle boats, and relaxing atmosphere. We love to cook and the kitchen had everything we needed. The view from the porch was delightful, especially over dinner. While we did not use the firepit, it is on the list for next time! The owners, John and Madeline were *very* responsive to our inquiries and were great hosts. We highly recommend this lake house and look forward to staying there again! Thank you, John and Madeline!
