Things to do:
Shenandoah Outfitters is a great place to start in planning your river adventure. It is an easy walk from Deer Forest Lodge. Check out their website or call them to make a reservation if you choose to use them for your canoeing, kayaking, rafting, or tubing adventures on the river.
If you would rather use your own equipment and plan your own river adventure, you can make use of the following boat ramps:
- Bealer’s Ferry Boat launch (about a mile south on Page Valley Road)
- Foster’s boat launch (about a mile north on Page Valley Road)
- Seekford boat launch (4.5 miles north on Page Valley Road)
- Inskeep boat ramp (6.6 miles south on Page Valley Road)
The cabin also provides easy access to some of the area’s best hiking:
- Habron Gap Trail (intermediate/two miles one way), with its trailhead near Foster’s boat ramp: Enjoy stunning views up and down the South Fork of the Shenandoah River until you crest on the Massanutten Trail
- Indian Grave Trail (intermediate/2.6 miles one way): Just beyond the Seekford boat ramp is the trailhead for the Indian Grave Trail, which also summits at the Massanutten Trail.
- Kennedy Peak Trail (intermediate/9.5 mile loop): Don’t give up before you reach the overlook!
You also won’t want to miss the great hiking along Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park, including the Stony Man, Little Stony Man, Hawksbill, and Old Rag hikes.
Of course, no trip to Luray would be complete without a visit to the iconic Luray Caverns. The caverns are a national treasure and are the most popular caverns in the eastern United States.
Some good restaurants in and around Luray include:
- The Speakeasy Pub
- Broad Porch Coffee
- Watch and Warrant
- The Valley Cork
- Triple Crown BBQ
The Blue Ridge Whisky and Wine Loop goes through Luray. Some locations along the trail that are an easy drive from the cabin include:
- River Hill Distillery (15 minutes)
- Hawksbill Brewing Company (17 minutes)
- Faithbrooke Barn and Vineyards (20 minutes)
- Castle Vineyards (20 minutes)
- Wisteria Farm and Vineyard (25 minutes)
Other area attractions that are worth a visit include:
- Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park, with water slides, swimming pools, splash pad, mini golf, ziplines, and more (20 minutes)
- Bear Mountain Adventures, with awesome ziplines and a climbing wall (20 minutes)
- Fort Valley Ranch and Trail Rides (23 minutes)
- Shenandoah National Park and Skyline Drive (35 minutes)
Guests will have access to the entire cabin and property.
The cabin has keyless, contact-free entry. There is no need to stop and pick up a key. When you arrive in the area, you can go straight to the cabin and unwind.
I will be available at all times while guests are in the cabin, although I try to keep regular business hours as much as possible for the sake of my family. If something needs attention, I will do my best to get it fixed as quickly as possible!
The neighborhood is mostly comprised of vacation cabins full of fellow river adventurers, but there are some full-time residences there as well.
The cabin is on a regular, monthly pest control schedule, but sometimes unwanted bugs may venture inside. This area is home to stink bugs, Asian beetles, wood roaches, gnats, and mosquitos, which may view open windows and doors as an invitation. I recommend keeping windows and doors closed when not in use.
Page Valley Road is a small, meandering backcountry lane that snakes its way along the Shenandoah River, passing campgrounds and cabins galore. A few miles past the cabin, the pavement ends and you will be driving on gravel. Forest Road itself is a dirt road that can be a bumpy drive. I recommend a 4x4 if you are visiting in Winter.
The cabin is in a remote area and there is no broadband internet. We provide Wi-Fi through cellular internet which the best option available, but is not what you would expect to get in a city. Most locals use AT&T or T-Mobile. Verizon is pretty weak.

Check in is at 4:00 pm and check out is at 10:00. These times are fixed. The cleaners keep a very tight schedule and make their plans around this six hour window. Out of respect to them, I cannot make exceptions to these times.
Please note that as a small business, I am not able to grant last-minute refunds, so I highly recommend protecting your investment with travel insurance.

The cabin was very nice and was the perfect place to get away from the city!
The property was beautiful, the woods were just lovely. Super relaxing time in such a fantastic setting.
We liked the location and the cabin has everything one needs to enjoy the outdoors, or stay in and enjoy the hot tub, pool table, or a TV in nearly every room!! Very large dining space and kitchen and nice yard for outdoor activities if you are so inclined. Great area and scenery!! Watch for deer, they walk around all over the place!!
Family get together to celebrate Thanksgiving. The kitchen was well stocked to cook a Thanksgiving feast. Everyone had a great time playing pool, relaxing in the jacuzzi, and each night sitting by the fire pit. We are a family of 9 and had plenty of room/space.
Very relaxing, the bed on lower level was amazing. Secluded yet still close to everything you’d want to do like fishing, hiking, wineries. Was a very relaxing stay. Took a couple days to get the hot tub to heat up but also enjoyable. Our pups totally enjoying their first away from home trip. Would def rent again
Everything was just like the pictures! there was plenty of room for all of us and there was a lot to do at and nearby the house. Dolly was able to answer all my questions and gave great tips on how to have a good time in Luray. I’d love to stay again and I highly recommend this place!
Accurate description on posting. Within 15-20 mins to restaurants, stores, and attractions. Beautiful night sky.
With Easy access to tubing, kayaking, and near by hikes, we love this place and can’t wait to come back again! Enough room for everyone to relax and enjoy the Shenandoah, we cannot recommend this place enough!
I have NEVER seen a place so very well prepared for us! The cabin was spotless. And the kitchen was well stocked beyond our imagination. The description in the listing doesn’t do this place justice. I would rate in 10 stars if I could. And the communication with the host (Dolly) couldn’t have been better. She kept in touch through the entire process and made sure we were comfortable all through our stay there!
My family and I enjoyed our stay at Deer Forest Lodge. Check in was super easy and communication with the host was open and quick. The host family is kind and all they really want is your family to enjoy the time at their property. Amazingly, there were not a lot of bugs... maybe because we kept a fire going in the pit or had citronelle candles on the deck? But this was the first time ever that we stayed in a cabin and our three girls didn't get eaten alive by bugs! The cabin had everything we needed... We forgot to bring trash bags, but the house had enough for our stay. In turn, we left some disposable cups and plates for the next guest. Overall, we enjoyed our time and would recommend to families with children. Thanks, Dolly and Brendan for sharing your place with us!
The cabin is great, and Dolly is too! Highly recommended!
We were looking for a place for our multigenerational family to spend time in nature. We found this cabin to be a good space for us to relax and enjoy time together and small groups. We enjoyed the hot tub and fire pit while on property. We visited local sites like the caverns, museums and restaurants.
It’s truly a beautiful property. The hot tub was wonderful and it was extremely clean I found. I went on a similar trip to the Smokies the previous year and it was not nearly as clean as it was at Deer Forest Lodge. We travelled with 9 and although it was tight at times, there was enough space for all of us. The jacuzzi was a great way to relax. The one thing is that we were a bit tight on toilet paper near the end of the week but nothing major. Great visit!
It was an enjoyable weekend at the property.
Our group of friends really enjoyed our stay. Dolly was a great host and checked in when our reservation was made, prior to our stay with cabin details, and after check in to ensure we were all set. Thanks for giving us a great place for our getaway!
I recently stayed at a log cabin in the woods in Luray and had an incredibly relaxing experience. The cabin was cozy, well-maintained, and had all the amenities I needed for a comfortable stay. The location was perfect for a peaceful getaway. The host was also top-notch, being friendly and helpful. I highly recommend this cabin to anyone looking for a serene and relaxing vacation
We had an amazing time staying here and we are so grateful they provided us with a Christmas tree. The entire family had a blast and had a lot of fun. Everything was clean and the grocery store was super close by. Amazing experience!
Amazing cabin tucked away on the side of a mountain. Small and cozy, but at the same time spacious enough that the 8 of us (plus a dog) never felt like we were in each other's way. Pool table, hot tub, and board games were all a big hit considering we stayed during the remnants of hurricane Ian. Spacious backyard for the dog to run around freely. Quiet neighborhood so you could enjoy the peace of the outdoors. Extra bonus of having most things provided (linens, towels, toilet paper, etc etc) in the already well provisioned house. Only a short drive to get to Luray and Skyline drive. Owner was quick to respond with answers to questions about the house and recommendations for places in the area. Overall a great stay and great weekend!
Great communication with host. Anything needed attention she was on top of.couldnt have asked for a better host. Great getaway for couples..will return.
We were very comfortable as a group of 8. Walking distance to Shenandoah River Outfitters.
Our group had a great time at the cabin. We liked the location right by the Outfitter. We enjoyed the porch and firepit. The property was clean and efficient and we would definitely return. Host was very easy to reach. Thanks for an awesome trip!
Everything was set up perfectly and had tons of stuff to do. Personally we enjoyed the pool table more than anything. I would highly recommend!
Great cabin to stay in.
