Ruidoso, New Mexico
'Free from disturbance' Rainbow Oaks is a quiet haven where time and schedules lose all meaning. Come relax back in time, so you can return to your future with a tranquil stay. Tucked away in the deep forest of the Upper Canyon in Ruidoso on 3 acres is Rainbow Oaks: the oldest cabin on the Ruidoso River. If you love seclusion, history, abundant wild life and a bubbling river, this is the place for you. The property has a spacious yard and swing perfect for children and young at heart adults. Giant rocks for climbing are sprinkled around the property along with hill sides for exploring and a stream to wade. Large picnic table in the yard is wonderful for outdoor dining. There is also a patio with chairs for additional outdoor enjoyment and a screened in front porch facing the river for hours of relaxation. Often deer, elk, bear, turkey and wild horses will wander by as you relax on the porch. Night time brings a new wonder: stars galore and our galaxy, the Milky Way are visible after dark thirty. Be sure to bring your four-legged family members as well, as the cabin is pet friendly! Rainbow Oaks was built in 1915 by the Honorable Judge Medler as a summer retreat from the heat in Las Cruces NM. The name, Rainbow Oaks is for the over 200+ year old Oak tree which is still on the property. The main cabin is one level featuring wood burning fireplace with three bedrooms and two baths including an antique claw foot tub. The old house has been completely renovated. The guest house is one bedroom with kitchen and bathroom separate from the main house. It is perfect for grandparents traveling with family. Cell service is limited in the Upper Canyon, therefore, we provide WIFI for your phones functionality. This property DOES NOT have air conditioning for summer months, but generally is 15 degrees cooler than the rest of Ruidoso and evenings are very comfortable.

Nice cozy cabin on a great piece of property with beautiful views!
The stay was amazing! Wild horses roamed through the property and the house was majical with old charm.
The property was the best, the cabins were so nostalgic. We will back!
It is so beautiful and peaceful at your home. We enjoyed it so much. The elk bugling on the last morning we all got to here was very cool. Thank you so much for sharing your home.
This was one of our favorite places to stay. It is very quiet and the river was beautiful. We definitely plan to go there again and will request the Rainbow oaks and Little house again. We now know that this is a great place and will plan to stay longer next time.
We loved our stay here. It's a great location surrounded by wildlife and large trees. It's less secluded than the description would lead you to believe as there are several other cabins nearby, but all were empty during our stay.
We did feel very secluded as cabins on either side were unoccupied. Enjoyed the screened in porch and the deer eating apples outside the dining room windows. Cabin furnishings and kitchen utensils could use some updating.
This cabin was perfect for our family vacation this year.
The cabin is rustic but so beautifully maintained and decorated. The property is lovely but a little difficult to find. It was just what we were looking for in a quick get away from the Texas heat. We especially enjoyed the patio and screened in porch.
The property was beautiful. The area was secluded which we really liked. The directions were lacking. Adding a couple of more instructions (after the bridge follow the road to the left until you reach a Y and then go right until you see Rainbow Oaks sign) would have been very helpful. All 3 of the families in our group struggled to find the home with the instructions given.
This is a great property. It borders the Apache reservation. Remote and rustic but still only 5-10 minute drive to Midtown. Perfect if you want to walk with your dog. Screened Porch was great. Internet was good. If you don’t have to be in walking distance of midtown then this is a no brainer.
I truly recommend this lovely cabin, it was perfect in every way, thank you!
Enjoyed the scenery and rustic cabin, all of the appliances and amenities worked great as well
We booked the cabin for a weekend getaway for a family of three. There was plenty of room to invite friends with the included small separated cabin. We enjoyed the scenery and history of the cabin. Would definitely do it again.
I’d rent again
The cabin and guest were a lovely place to stay and clearly a well loved and enjoyed destination. The scenery was beautiful however, there were a few spots in the home that were not as clean as I would have preferred ie a used ear plug on the floor, a dirty toilet bowl, etc.
This cabin was just what my wife and I were looking for. Comfortable and secluded, but close enough to town for the occasional trip in. We loved the wild life passing thru the property in the mornings and evenings.
Very much an older home/cabin. Rustic but comfortable. No cell service but there was a phone and internet. Loved and enjoyed the stream running in the back.
Loved the old cabin and the creek behind the cabin. Great experiences. Could not believe all the fees. But we’ll worth it.
This place is perfect. The wildlife is abundant. Saw lots of deer, and a bull elk came through quite a bit. Right up against the reservation. Only thing you hear is the river flowing about 25 yards from the house. Loved our stay here.
Finding the cabin was challenging. No signage at the main road or cutoff road. The screened in porch and river were fabulous and our favorite spot.
We enjoyed the seclusion of this property. It made our escape from work life much more enjoyable.
We enjoyed our stay. Everything was as expected. The kids loved the walk to the water and the wildlife was a plus. They loved it! We look forward to our next visit.
The cabin was small, it was fine for us because we were out and about. The first evening we saw a bear behind the property. We had the opportunity to see lots of wildlife and I assume the resident cat. I like that the property is remote and not on a busy street. I would suggest a new dishpan, it was quite old. This came with a small cabin we never entered because one quest could not make it.
I loved the cabin, the setting, and the privacy
This is a historic cabin right off the river. It has a wonderful screened in porch with seating for all. Our first priority was to fill the hummingbird feeder! Deer were abundant and it was truly peaceful. The cabin had great water pressure which can be hard to find being a native from Ruidoso. It’s was cozy and comfortable and we will be back soon.
The cabin is in a beautiful, secluded location right on the edge of Ruidoso, so close to downtown. A little dusty, but that is no surprise considering the present drought. Spent a lot of time on the back porch from which I saw deer, wild (I think) horses and one black bear. Highly recommend
Great stone cabins in a quiet neighborhood with the sounds of a forest. It was nice seeing the deer, wild turkey, horses, birds, etc. The cabin and guest cabin were as described in the ad and had plenty of indoor and outdoor seating.. they even have table cloths for the picnic table.. we loved staying there. They were cute and quaint which made us very comfortable. The family photo's were nice, painting the properties past. FYI you will want to bring your own shampoo, plus hand and shower soaps as they only provide enough for 1 night. We would definitely stay there again.
