The nearby Glendale Springs Inn offers a wonderful dinner menu, for those special nights out. You'll also find great restaurants in the town of West Jefferson, only 15-minutes away. This is small-town Americana at its finest, with a wonderful combination of quaintness, culture, dining, and shopping options. Here you'll find antique stores, art galleries, wine tasting and the famous Ashe Co. Cheese Factory. The old-fashioned country store also offers delicacies like homemade fudge, ice cream, salsas and local jams. Stroll the town and feel as if you've stepped back in time.
Drive a little further to Boone or Blowing Rock, for an even wider assortment of dining, entertainment and shopping options. And remember that here in Blue Ridge Country, the journey is as satisfying as the destination, with gorgeous scenery at every turn.
In the winter enjoy skiing, snowboarding, snow tubing or ice skating at one of the many area resorts. Awesome stay for a couple or small family if you're looking for a quiet retreat. The beds were not comfortable - the mattress in the master bedroom needs to be replaced. If you can overlook that issue, it's a great spot for a weekend getaway. We spent most of the time on the screened porch and deck, anyways. Close to West Jefferson and lots of hikes.
We liked the hot tub and the screened in porch. The grill was rusted out and unusable and the furniture was not very comfortable.
If you understand what you are getting, you'll have a nice stay. It's a small cabin, look at the pictures, the kitchen is small (note there is a larger, though not full-size, fridge than what's in the pictures). The bedroom is downstairs, the other 3 beds are in a loft, with a ladder, not stairs for access. The ladder made me really nervous because it has off-set steps, i.e., a step for left foot, then 8 inches higher, a step for right foot. It ultimately made it easier to climb, but it requires you to start with a specific foot or you miss a step. We used the hot tub in 45 degrees with rain, used it with 32 degrees and clear. The kids loved it. It did need some cleaning, but the company came out in a few hours of me emailing them to clean it. The biggest disappointment was the river. It was very difficult to access the river. The property is hemmed in by other properties and once you get down to the river, many properties are signed as no-trespassing. We never really figured out how to get to the river without going through what seemed to be someone else's property. But once you get to it, it's steep river bank in most areas and no trails, You can stand there and look at it and in the summer, I guess get in, but not when it's 35! A recent reviews suggested the place was haunted. My conclusion is that they are not familiar with baseboard heating. It's electric baseboard heating, warms up fast, makes lost of popping and creaking sounds.
As a Christmas gift, my wife wanted us to visit a cabin in location that was likely to have snow. She did get a little snow, so that was a win. I want to provide as accurate and fair of a review because there are elements of this cabin experience that I wish had known ahead of time. At least, more information would have saved me an absolutely owed Do Over Christmas Trip. I will start with the negative aspects, but I will provide the positives below. Negative Aspects: If you are arriving after dark, because in the winter it's dark almost directly after check-in time (4PM), you may be unable to locate the cabin without this following, unprovided information (And you'll have to drive 25 minutes to find signal to contact the office where you'll likely leave a message and wait for a return call- Which we QUICKL tro be fair): * This cabin shares a parking space with the visible cabin. You park and assume that you are in the cabin located to the right of you because you CAN'T see that there is a walkway to this cabin on the left. AND you can't see the cabin from the road, in the very dark night. The walking pathway to MossyTop is not lit. * The upstairs is only actually accessible if you want to climb the terribly unsafe ladder to go up. You will likely not get luggage up the ladder easily. * The Beds are HORRIBLY uncomfortable. Nothing will halt a romantic weekend like the inability to be comfortable in a bed. The main downstairs bed is on wheels, and I am assuming it's a very cheap foam mattress. The queen bed in the loft is uncomfortable. I considered sleeping on one of the twin beds upstairs because those mattresses at least sucked less. However, it's a pain to take any thing to the loft. So the loft is pretty useless. * Downstairs TV has cable only. No smart TV here. * The couch downstairs is not the couch in the picture. It's like a busted IKEA dorm room couch-like thing. * TV only in the living room area * No TV upstairs & No bedroom TV. * Night 1- The house was quite but NIGHT 2, there were scratching sounds on the walls, shaking silverware and sounds of the doors slamming. It was TERRIFYING. It sounded like a party was happening in the cabin, just not in the downstairs bedroom. These sounds would start and last 30-55 minutes and then calm down for 15 minutes and start again. My wife and I are doctorate level providers. We are NOT saying this place is haunted. But we don't have an answer. Hotub is nice &- Full Size Refrigerator
Cabin was quaint and quiet and close to the river for fishing. I wished though the neighbors weren’t so close… a little more secluded would have been nice. Overall the experience was quite nice.
Our third visit to Mossy Top was wonderful again! Although the kitchen (plates and silverware) could have been cleaner, everything else was very nice and just as described. Peaceful, secluded, very quiet, only a couple of neighbors. The hot tub was clean and worked great. The new fridge is nice, the new couch is nice. We plan to return!
My wife and I enjoyed the property very much! We was only there for a weekend, but it suited us well. It was very quiet at the property. Highly recommend to a couple looking for a weekend getaway just to relax.
Easy to rent and everyone was very polite and respectful
Very relaxing with lots of laughs
Only word to describe our stay is ah-mazing!!
Note: please inform that a 4x4 car is required when is snowing. We spent 3 hours stock in the way to the main road
The walkway from the parking spot to front door is extremely dark and the trees need to be trimmed back. There are a few solar lights for the walkway but they don’t work. There’s no “direct river access” as mentioned in description. You have to walk down the road, down a path, and what looks like through someone else’s property. The screened in porch and deck is very nice. There’s lights strung along the back porch that adds such a great touch. We really enjoyed the hot tub. Everything worked great. The master bedroom is exactly as pictured. There’s no where to put your clothes so you’ll need to keep your things in your suitcase. If that’s important to you please keep that in mind. I think there should be more than one roll of toilet paper and one trash bag provided. There’s a different couch than the one in the pictures and there’s a full size refrigerator now. There was a lot of dust for the cleaning fee charge. There was food in one of the pans hanging in the rack. The bathroom is small but the shower is extremely small. If you’re a bigger person this isn’t the cabin for you. If there’s more than two people I’d probably chose another cabin but otherwise it was okay.
