Keywords: 'It's About Time' you spoil yourself & stay in this 5 STAR Mountain Home. This 4 bedroom 41/2 bath home has 3 firelaces & offers dramatic mountain views from every room. Minutes from Mast General Store in Valle Crucis & the Watauga River.
I looked at hundreds of houses and decided on this house. I was worried about the spring water and the driveway. Neither was an issue. We grabbed a few gallons of water at the store in town. The driveway was in great shape and not steep enough to worry about it. Close to town, but feels like you are out in the wilderness. Best of both worlds. Gorgeous house. Great hot tub lounging.
Accurate listing, great views, and a wonderful outdoor fireplace!
First off the house is amazing, and George was responsive and helpful via text. The house is beautiful and the location deserves more stars that you can give it. That said the listing is misleading in several regards. The addresses on the listing aren’t the real address, there’s no mention of how crazy the driveway is, there’s no mention of the fact you can’t drink the water, and there’s no pool table despite the photo. I didn’t read the reviews, b/c the rating was a 4.8, so I wasn’t aware until after our booking that I needed 4WD. One person in our party had 4WD luckily bc we all got stuck and had to be towed. I’ve lived in Boone for 5 years, this isn’t inexperience of mountain roads, the driveway is steep, not steeper than normal for the area, but poorly maintained. Gravel has washed off the road and it’s basically a steep mud run with a should that falls off into a pasture and creek. If you’re an anxious person, find another house. The house is super nice, but lots of things were broken, the back porch door handle was completely broken off, two knobs in the stove were broken, the front door was broken, one of the faucets in the kitchen, and one of the shower faucets were broken. The hot tub was warm but the water had a funky smell and was yellowish, so despite our excitement to use it, no one did. The listing shows a pool table/ air hockey, that doesn’t exist. Great place to get away to, just be warned that it will be hard to access, and you can’t drink the water. Otherwise you’ll love the setting, the deer, and the gorgeous home! Despite our difficulties we would probably stay here again!
Warm and cozy home away from home, everything needed to feel as if we were at our own house, everything worked with ease, fireplace was a great touch and conversation piece, morning wake up was amazing seeing the mountains, rooms we’re comfortable and having private showers and restrooms were great!!! AAA+
Sugar Grove was exactly as advertised. It's a lovely cabin home in a secluded area, but yet close to Boone and many outdoor activities. We were able to walk up and down the hill and explore the property during our stay. You will certainly get a good glute and leg workout! The homeowner, George, was wonderful to work with and very responsive. Any questions we had were answered promptly. Wi-fi in the home was reasonable given the area. I was able to work remotely for a few days and had no connectivity issues. Please pay attention to the information in the description related to the private drive up to the home. It is a single lane, steep drive which requires a comfortable driver and a slow and steady pace. We were there in the fall, and although it did not rain, the drive was wet with dew and muddy in places. I recommend a 4x4 or AWD vehicle as a must in spring, fall and winter. Overall the cabin is a bit dated, but comfortable. It does offer 3 fireplaces, but the gas log fireplace was not operational. This did not impact our stay. The kitchen was stocked, but if you need something special, I would suggest bringing it with you or buying it in Boone. There is a Walmart, Publix and Harris Teeter all within a 15–20-minute drive. We did bring a Brita water filtration system, trying to cut down on our use of plastic bottles, and that was used extensively. Bottomline...Sugar Grove is a cabin home to be considered if visiting the Boone area. The sheer number of stars to be appreciated in the sky without light pollution is stunning and certainly worth the price of admission! My family is planning to return in 2023.
We had 11 people stay for 4 nights (2 grandparents, 4 parents, 5 children 9 and under). We loved the house and isolated location. Road to property is accurately described in the listing; rough, but 4 wheel drive not needed in the summer. House is not very far from a main road as were many of the listings in the ski areas. There were a few minor things that need to be fixed, but the owner was very responsive and is planning on taking care of them. The AC went out while we were there, but owner had a repairman out very promptly and fixed it. We regularly saw deer and turkeys. Adults and kids loved the house and setting. We would definitely go back.
Lovely home with plenty of comfortable beds. Great views and a great time.
It does not state 4-wheel drive required or recommended. Our friends arrived 1st and their vehicle got stuck in the muddy, washed out road to the house and blew a tire. Per the recommendation of the contact, they called to get vehicle out. The man came & dragged the vehicle out to the road (no help offered to get it anywhere to be fixed) & charged X (cash only). It was getting dark quickly so the rest of the party walked up the extremely steep road to the house. I called contact and he said that he didn't feel the road was that bad and our friends probably were not use to mountain roads. (Meanwhile he is out of state) I contacted VRBO who said we could try and change to another property. (I had purchased the cancellation policy) The issue was the party was stuck on the mountain in the dark with no vehicle to get anywhere. I tried repeatedly to explain this but was completely ignored. While waiting for us to get there, they tried to order food. The delivery lady came and said there was no way she could get up that road. Now, the party was stuck at the house with no way to get any food. My husband and I got there around 11pm. We have a Tahoe. My husband gunned it and we literally were swerving and fishtailing the entire way up. When we finally got to the top, I was hyperventilating. (I grew up in WV, I am not someone who does not know the mountains) This was an unsafe, potentially deadly situation. I tried to text the contact to explain how bad the road was and he ghosted me. Because of the condition of this road, we could not safely bring our Tahoe back down. Next day we walked down the mountain & met tow truck who loaded our friend's vehicle & drove it into town to be repaired. (x + cost of repair). After the vehicle was repaired, we drove back to the bottom of the road and again walked up the mountain. We had a 68 year old veteran with us that has COPD. He barely made it up the mountain the 1st night and was stuck in the house the entire 3 days. When the kids went to play the air hockey, it fell to the ground. 3 of the legs had been broken and it had been staged to be standing. The door to the outside fireplace was broken and you couldn't use it to get outside. We had to go thru one of the bedrooms each time we went out. One bedroom had moisture on wall. While we were there it went below 0 and froze the road. We got the Tahoe down slipping & sliding on ice. One party member fell on the ice & busted her knee open on the final walk down
This cabin is perfect. Has all you need inside, check in and out is super easy. Views are incredible, quiet, relax place. Owner though of all the details, it is just amazing. Will come back for sure.
This property was perfect for everything that my family wanted to do. Needing a 4x4 in the winter is a must! Bring extra bath cloths because none were available and housekeeping isn't coming! George, the owner, was definitely Amazing! He stayed in communication with us until we returned home. Being a Travel Assistant, I'm very particular about booking reservations but my family was pleased! The windows were open when we arrive so make sure to check those 1st upon arrival to ensure no little critters are vacationing with you! We would stay again,
