Topton, North Carolina
A traditional log home, completely wood inside and out. Just a small glimpse of heaven from this beautiful lakefront log home with breathtaking views of Nantahala Lake and the mountains surrounding it. The majestic mountains rising out of the crystal clear mountain lake waters are the backdrop for a wonderful vacation. This large body of water towers at the height of 3013 ft above sea level.
The spaces inside are large and comfortable for 10 people. The kitchen is fully equipped and modern with a Jenn-Aire dual fuel gas stovetop cooking and electric baking. The dining table will seat 8 people comfortably and has a view of the lake. The bedrooms all have queen or king beds. The basement has a pool table, a TV and a table top shuffle board table, all for your entertainment. It also has an additional bathroom with a shower/tub combination and a laundry room with a washer and dryer.
There is an outdoor fire pit for roasting marshmallows and making s'mores or build a fire outside and enjoy. If you choose to bring a boat, there is deep water, concrete, public ramp for launching nearby, and we have a deep water dock for keeping your boat during your stay. The lake is lowered by Duke Energy beginning around the middle of September, and it doesn't come back up until the spring. During these times, the dock will be resting on the lake bottom.
The gentle slope from the house to the lake and dock is easy to walk along the gravel path, which has a few landings. Enjoy sitting outside and watching the lake's water activities.
Photos of the interior can be relied on for a general feel of the furnishings; however, the furnishings may be changed from time to time. Photos of the exterior can be relied on for a general feel of the walk down to the dock. Don't think that they were taken yesterday, they weren't, but it is still the same backyard. The summer months have more foliage on the plants and trees than the winter months. The exterior photos were taken in the cooler months, and we don't show all the seasons in our photos. Heavy rains will cause the pea gravel to move, and that is unfortunate, but we don't have a lawn maintenance person to add more gravel. The mountains are natural, and we want to keep it that way.
There is a Harrah's Casino within a 45-minute drive.
Must be 28 years or older to rent.
The drive to the cabin is about 20 minutes of gravel, single-lane road, and is not conducive to low-riding vehicles.

Perfect place for our extended family of 10. Beautiful setting with great lake access. The house had everything we needed.
From the breathtaking lake views, to the cozy yet spacious cabin everything is absolutely amazing. My family and I stayed a week, and didn’t ever want to leave the cabin. Such a relaxing spot and perfect for quality time, everything in the cabin is set up for an unforgettable stay. Highly recommend! The owners are amazing, and so helpful when needing questions answered as we are from Florida and things are a bit different down there. Can’t wait to plan another stay and come back.
Our second time at Nantahala Lake, again amazing. We had a great time at this house, which was the perfect size, and loved the visits from otters and ducks. The dock was great, and allowed us to enjoy our boat and the lake to the fullest extent.
We rented this property for a gathering of close friends. The house is very well appointed and the location is amazing. We were able to rent a boat that was delivered right to the dock. Would highly recommend this for any large family.
Excellent second stay and memories to match
Rented the cabin for 10 nights. Had a great time hanging out on the dock and kayaking on the lake. Rented a Ski boat for 3 days of our stay. Only left the cabin to buy groceries.
We loved everything about the cabin. No complaints! We wanted to be directly on the lake this year so it was perfect. Our kids spent most of the time on the dock fishing and swimming. The screened in porch on the main floor was one of our favorite places to hang out. Beautiful place !
The Matern’s cabin is a beautifully designed cabin that accommodates a large group of 10 and you never feel crowded! The lay out of the cabin includes many sitting areas to give everyone the privacy they need. The cabin is situated in a prime location on the lake with a dock and very nice walk way. The owners were very accommodating and informative. Ask questions if you need to know anything! The kitchen is Very well stocked with most anything you will need! We are big cookers and we’re quite comfortable in the kitchen! Drive is not as bad as some say. First trip up is a little Intimidating but gets easier each time! We were there the beginning of June and did not have Four-wheel-drive or all wheel drive and did just fine. Look for the waterfall in finger of lake if you rent a boat. It is well worth the hike up! Wayah bald is beautiful scenery although if you like hiking, try bartram trail near the lakes end marina.
Stunning and peaceful location! The pictures do not do it justice. House was fully stocked with board games, kitchen items, etc. The driveway/roadway leading there is a bit tricky and as much as you read over the directions it is still hard to find, but don't let that discourage you. You will loose cell service so make sure you print out directions and info. This was our first family vacation with three families coming together and it could not have gone any better. Thank you for sharing this hidden gem!
The cabin and location was awesome. We had the best time. The lake and the views were astounding. The kids had a blast in the cabin, ping pong tournaments, hot tub, being on the lake, making nightly s’mores, catching fire flies, white water rafting, zip-lining, hiking, and rainbow trout fishing for dinner. This is a must do when considering the area. You won’t be let down!
