The cabin was really comfortable and the view and surrounds truly gorgeous. The house is minimally equipped but everything that was there was of high quality. It was wonderful to be off the grid (though I did appreciate that there was still cell phone service). The road to get there was winding and it was rainy when we were there, but even still we managed it in our dinky little Prius (thanks to owner Bill for giving us a report of the road before we set off). We would love to return.
Off the Grid routine took some time for us to get used to; but the stunning location and breathtaking views —and the cabin’s wonderful character —made it all worth the off-grid compromises!
Great place to stay. Would definitely stay again. Pros: VERY private. Wonderful wilderness and sunset views from the cabin windows and deck (bring binoculars). Access hiking trails out the front door of the cabin. Dog friendly. Responsive owner. No wi-fi or television (bring something to read and games to play). Cons: 1. Two mile private road to the cabin is rough. Our sedan did fine, but we had to drive very slowly and the road was dry. Recommend all-wheel or 4-wheel drive vehicle, especially during wet conditions. 2. Mini-fridge only and oven not hooked up yet. Plan accordingly. 3. Solar/battery powered cabin with propane. Recommend running the heat a few minutes before bedtime to heat the loft and then setting the thermostat overnight to no more than 60 degrees so you don’t run out of battery power in the middle of the night.
The cabin is very secluded so if you don’t like being at least 40 mins from town then this is not the place for you. Views were beautiful overlooking the reservoir and mountains. If you need assistance then Ranger Mike is the nearest person within 2 miles down a windy cliff side dirt road with about 30 other houses. Trailside Cafe in Carmel Valley Village is super yummy with beer on tap and breakfast and lunch all day. Plaza Linda restaurant has great Mexican food. The house uses Solar and then a generator so Bill (owner) can help you if you aren’t familiar with those things. Save energy in otherwords. House has a mini fridge so pack lightly. We had to use our ice chest for our drinks and fridge for food. Overall it was a relaxing and peaceful four day stay.
Sadly only there for one night but hoping to return as we loved it, and immediately felt relaxed. A small, rustic, off-grid home nestled on top of a ridge in the Carmel Valley with wonderful views. Off-grid but with solar battery power and propane so definitely creature comforts to enjoy. It was an opportunity for us to experience a little wilderness with our dog for the first time without being toooo far from civilization. We wouldn't liked to have gone up there without AWD or 4WD but given we did have an AWD the drive became part of the adventure. We wouldn't have popped back down to a grocery store if we'd forgotten anything but going out for day trips would have been fun too, driving up there. It is pretty remote though so solid recall for any off-leash pets as there's a lot to sniff!. Owner extremely help
