About the Area

Nestled just 4 miles inside the southern entrance of Yosemite National Park is the charming and historic town of Wawona. Located at the base of Chilnualna Falls (the second-highest vertical drop waterfall in Yosemite), and home to the principal trailheads into the southern Yosemite wilderness, Wawona is also the closest town to the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias.
Wawona has the feel of a small town but is bustling with activity! Over 160 residents, including Yosemite Park employees, live in Wawona and can be seen gathering at the town's community center, playing a pickup game of basketball at the elementary school, jogging on one of the many picturesque trails, or simply walking their dogs and baby strollers through the winding residential streets. The historic Wawona Swinging Bridge boasts the best natural water slide in the Park! The historic village is filled with docents, stagecoach rides, horseback rides, and barn dances in the summer season, and the Wawona Meadow Loop offers year-round riparian meadow wildlife viewing.
Wawona was known to the local Native American Miwok in their language as Pallachun (a good place to stay). It is located entirely within Yosemite National Park (it preceded the founding of the park as a national recreation area) and is located on the South fork of the wild and scenic Merced River, on the main highway (State Route 41) from Fresno to Yosemite Valley.
Galen Clark, who helped gain preservation legislation for Mariposa Grove and what later became part of Yosemite National Park, occupied the Wawona area in 1855 and established a tourist rest and modest ranch which he later sold and made into a hotel and resort property (the Wawona Hotel). The Wawona post office was established in 1878 and was originally called Clark's Station.
The Redwoods In Yosemite has over 120 vacation rental homes and is proud to say that all of them are located in Wawona. All are within walking distance to everything that Wawona has to offer and every one of them is surrounded by the majesty of Yosemite National Park!

...about this location? Great, convenient neighborhood next to one of the most incredible places on earth. House is clean, check in was easy, and access (summer) no problem. 2br 1 ba with 2 large sleeper sofas in a big room. Separate room party/family/billiard room is a nice addition. WIFI but no cable on our visit.

Wonderful place to stay with our family. Plenty of room both inside and outside to run around and lots to do in the surrounding areas. Close to the Yosemite valley entrance (about 20 miles away) with local groceries and markets available. Lots to do in Wawona as well with hiking trails, historic sites, etc. Cabin itself was stocked with everything we needed for a three day stay, rooms were comfortable with extra blankets and fans if needed, pool table was a hit, and overall the place had a warm and home like feel. Management was helpful and available as well.

We really enjoyed this cabin located inside the park gate. There are some great hikes within a short walking distance. The kitchen was well equipped to cook a nice meal after a long day on the trail. The only draw back was that the house would not cool off until late evening or early morning due to the lack of AC. This is pretty typical and fans were available. I would recommend this place again just plan accordingly for the hot summer days. Great place to disconnect and enjoy the family.

We arrived to checkin at 3:30 or so, went in the office to get our key etc, and we were told we couldn't checkin till 4, odd, and the cabin wasn't ready yet, went outside to wait the 20 minutes, went back in at 4, the young woman who checked us in was lovely, gave good directions etc...went to the cabin and we were disappointed to find a big blue tarp on the roof, a rickety plywood bridge over a trickle of water, dirty deck and outdoor seating were filthy, opened the doors in and we were even more disappointed, furniture was very dated and dirty, carpet was vacuumed, but was very musty smelling, started opening windows to air it out, and no screens on windows, Very welcoming to critters..we aren't very picky, but cabin was expensive, we expected clean n recently updated, not old n musty..called the desk n told them how unhappy we were with accommodations and what our options were, she said to open windows n air it out, and that housekeeping had left and we were pretty much stuck. Refund policy is awful , We left pretty angry n disappointed went n stayed at another lodge for our vacation, and had fun. My advice, before you pay for any cabin or residence is to drive by it first before signing final contract.someone did a VERY poor job of screening this cabin before allowing it on the site. Don't stay here. better locations are available

The Redwoods 81 house was a great home base for our Yosemite trip. It was quiet and spacious for the four of us (2 adults, 12 and 13 yr olds kids). In the evenings, we enjoyed the pool table and watched the Olymipics as a family with the satellite TV. We stayed 4 nights. One the first day we took the time to go into Oakhurst to a larger grocery store for dinners at the house and hiking foods. This was was quiet helpful. The nearby Redwoods and Wawona markets were convienent and had a combined variety of food that a frig could be stocked at bit higher prices. Yosemite is beautiful. We'll have to go back when the Mariposa grove reopens.

Yosemite is a wonder, and this home is a great beginning and resting point for our park experience. It is kind, to the elderly (not many stair steps) Also close to the trailhead for Chilnualna falls, and points beyond, which we hiked. This is a spacious comfortable house, without being ostentatious, we were very satisfied. Excellent!
