About the Area

Nestled just 4 miles inside the southern entrance of Yosemite National Park is the charming and historic town of Wawona. Located at the base of Chilnualna Falls (the second-highest vertical-drop waterfall in Yosemite) and home to the principal trailheads into the southern Yosemite wilderness, Wawona is also the closest town to the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias.
Wawona has the feel of a small town but is bustling with activity! Over 160 residents, including Yosemite Park employees, live in Wawona and can be seen gathering at the town's community center, playing a pickup game of basketball at the elementary school, jogging on one of the many picturesque trails, or simply walking their dogs and baby strollers through the winding residential streets. The historic Wawona Swinging Bridge boasts the best natural water slide in the Park! The history village is filled with docents, stagecoach rides, horseback rides, and barn dances in the summer season, and the Wawona Meadow Loop offers year-round riparian meadow wildlife viewing.
Wawona was known to the local Native American Miwok in their language as Pallachun (a good place to stay). It is located entirely within Yosemite National Park (it preceded the founding of the park as a national recreation area) and is located on the South Fork of the wild and scenic Merced River, on the main highway (State Route 41) from Fresno to Yosemite Valley.
Galen Clark, who helped gain preservation legislation for Mariposa Grove and what later became part of Yosemite National Park, occupied the Wawona area in 1855 and established a tourist rest and modest ranch, which he later sold and made into a hotel and resort property (the Wawona Hotel). The Wawona post office was established in 1878 and was originally called Clark's Station.
The Redwoods in Yosemite has over 120 vacation rental homes and is proud to say that all of them are located in Wawona. All are within walking distance to everything that Wawona has to offer, and every one of them is surrounded by the majesty of Yosemite National Park!

Our family stayed here while visiting Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park. We spent one night here. The address of the location was sent to us just a few days in advance of our registration. In addition to the address, you need a gate code (occasionally) and a code to the lockbox. The owners forgot to email us the detailed instructions the morning of our arrival. We had to call them in order to know how to get to the house and how to get in. They were apologetic and easy to work with and extremely nice. The house does have ceiling AC units and if you are traveling in a hot month, I’d recommend stopping and turning the AC on and letting the house cool down while you go grab dinner, etc. Unfortunately, traveling in July was very hot. It eventually cooled down in the middle of the night. Overall, it was a pleasant experience. The washer and dryer was nice to have. The bathroom is updated and felt clean.

We loved our stay at the Williams cabin. The kitchen was well stocked, with nice appliances. Large indoor dining table & huge outdoor tables with loads of chairs! It was very hot while we were in Yosemite but we managed well enough in the cabin letting the cool air in at night & closing up during the day. We enjoyed the short walk to Merced River to play in the river. Beds were incredibly comfortable & we would definitely enjoy staying here again!

My 4-stars for this visit is primarily because it was incredibly convenient being within the park boundaries and only ~35 minutes from Tunnel View, otherwise this cabin was very different than what I expect from a typical VRBO. This whole review needs clarification that I have different expectations with a VRBO than with a cabin rental company, especially when I know that Yosemite rentals probably get used hard through the summer. That said, prior to arrival I knew there was a management group, but I didn't fully understand this is not exactly a true VRBO private home experience. When you arrive you have to check in at the office to get your keys, so I'm glad we arrived during office hours because I don't know what happens otherwise? Once we got into the cabin we noticed a chair with a broken leg right away and the place definitely wouldn't be considered very clean but it's a cabin so we overlooked lots of that. Then it seemed there were many simple amenities missing. We barely had enough towels for our small group, there were no spices including salt&pepper, there wasn't a baking sheet but the 'housekeeping' provided one from the office only after I had to explain to the front desk why I would need one, and a kitchen drawer was broken before we ever used it... again, for an outdoorsy cabin in Yosemite this may be expected but I was anticipating this feeling like a VRBO-quality experience in terms of the housing. Now, with all of this said, we did still absolutely love the location, the property staff was kind, and being close to the little village market made it easy to buy spices/paper towels/etc. I just wouldn't consider this experience what I hope to get from a VRBO.

The neighborhood is tucked away behind the Wawona Hotel and is just a quick walk to the Merced River! Kitchen was well stocked. The deck was our favorite spot to hang out and BBQ. After-hours maintenance team was quick to respond to our empty propane tank and the office always had fresh towels and soap during our stay. The kids liked being able to walk to the market.

Nice cabin with good deck and decent view. Front and back door do not have screens so you cannot leave doors open to cool down the house in the evening without letting in bugs. This left the family room and kitchen extremely hot as only 2 windows open on the back side and none on the front. Bedrooms cooled off well due to multiple windows. Kitchen is small, but workable for 5. 8 would be tough. No vent hood hooked up over the stove so cooking became a challenge. The smoke alarm went off while cooking. Several other kitchen items needed attention like the broken deli drawer in the Frig. This was frustrating. Fun movies to watch.

Arrived Sunday and stayed through Friday. Quiet location, beautifully appointed and comforting cabin. Nice kitchen, living room. Two bedrooms, one master, the other has a queen bed and two bunkbeds. The cabin is a short walk to the Merced river.
