About the Area

Nestled just 4 miles inside the southern entrance of Yosemite National Park is the charming and historic town of Wawona. Located at the base of Chilnualna Falls (the second-highest vertical-drop waterfall in Yosemite), and home to the principal trailheads into the southern Yosemite wilderness, Wawona is also the closest town to the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias.
Wawona has the feel of a small town but is bustling with activity! Over 160 residents, including Yosemite Park employees, live in Wawona and can be seen gathering at the town's community center, playing a pickup game of basketball at the elementary school, jogging on one of the many picturesque trails, or simply walking their dogs and baby strollers through the winding residential streets. The historic Wawona Swinging Bridge boasts the best natural water slide in the Park! The history village is filled with docents, stagecoach rides, horseback rides, and barn dances in the summer season, and the Wawona Meadow Loop offers year-round riparian meadow wildlife viewing.
Wawona was known to the local Native American Miwok in their language as Pallachun (a good place to stay). It is located entirely within Yosemite National Park (it preceded the founding of the park as a national recreation area) and is located on the South Fork of the wild and scenic Merced River, on the main highway (State Route 41) from Fresno to Yosemite Valley.
Galen Clark, who helped gain preservation legislation for Mariposa Grove and what later became part of Yosemite National Park, occupied the Wawona area in 1855 and established a tourist rest and modest ranch, which he later sold and made into a hotel and resort property (the Wawona Hotel). The Wawona post office was established in 1878 and was originally called Clark's Station.
The Redwoods in Yosemite has over 120 vacation rental homes and is proud to say that all of them are located in Wawona. All are within walking distance to everything that Wawona has to offer, and every one of them is surrounded by the majesty of Yosemite National Park!

The Redwoods is a great option if you can’t get or can’t afford lodging in Yosemite Valley. It’s a fairly short drive and you can’t put a price on not having to fight the traffic at the Park entrances. There is a well equipped market on the property and the cabins are really nice. I did not give it 5 stars only because the lack of television service.

Our stay at the Redwoods was amazing as always. We have been visiting for over 15 years and it never disappoints. The only thing is I forgot my secondary cell phone, I just got home from a 4hr drive?‍? and don’t know what to do.

We love wawona and keep coming back to the redwoods in Yosemite. The cabin was perfect with lovely views, comfortable with many games for the family. Just remember to bring things like salt and pepper that are not provided.

The cabin layout was really nice for our family including teenagers. Big dinner table and comfy living area. The big deck and nearby walking is great too. The master bedroom, I believe, should be upgraded with nicer bedding and have one big / queen bed, placed comfortably in the middle of the room versus how it is - up against the wall with a twin also in the same room The BBQ worked well and was easy to use. This cabin is within Yosemite - we visited Redwood Grove at the South Gate on our way to the cabin - then went on to Yosemite Valley the next day (about 30 more minutes further into the park). Bring what you need for food as the market nearby is cute but tiny and expensive.

Summary of this property = Love! There was plenty of room for three of us, myself, husband & 21 year old son (plus our dog). The kitchen was well stocked & appliances appeared updated. Only interesting thing was no kitchen towels or a sponge, but we picked one up & there were paper towels to use. If you are driving, just bring those items & you'll be covered. The area was quiet & this location is back a little so you don't have cars or people driving by which was nice. BBQ worked great the first night & we used the fireplace often as there was a cold streak with snow flurries when we were there. Beds were all comfortable & there were plenty of blankets & bedding available, as well as closet & drawer space. I would 100% recommend this location & look forward to planning another stay in the future.

The cabin was perfect for our family six. The beds were comfy and shower water pressure was fantastic. (Although, make sure to bring your own shampoo and conditioner, because it is not supplied.) The living area, dining room, and deck provide great spaces to hang out and play games. (There is a fully loaded games closet and bookshelf.) It is close to the creek and well stocked local market. It took us about 40 minutes to drive to Yosemite Village every day. There are also great hikes with trailheads just minutes from the cabin! We highly recommend!
