About the Area

Nestled just 4 miles inside the southern entrance of Yosemite National Park is the charming and historic town of Wawona. Located at the base of Chilnualna Falls (the second highest vertical drop waterfall in Yosemite), and home to the principal trailheads into the southern Yosemite wilderness, Wawona is also the closest town to the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias.
Wawona has the feel of a small town but is bustling with activity! Over 160 residents, including Yosemite Park employees, live in Wawona and can be seen gathering at the town's community center, playing a pickup game of basketball at the elementary school, jogging on one of the many picturesque trails or simply walking their dogs and baby strollers through the winding residential streets. The historic Wawona Swinging Bridge boasts the best natural water slide in the Park! The history village is filled with docents, stagecoach rides, horseback rides, and barn dances in the summer season and the Wawona Meadow Loop offers year round riparian meadow wildlife viewing.
Wawona was known to the local Native American Miwok in their language as Pallachun (a good place to stay). It is located entirely within Yosemite National Park (it preceded the founding of the park as a national recreation area), and is located on the South fork of the wild and scenic Merced River, on the main highway (State Route 41) from Fresno to Yosemite Valley.
Galen Clark, who helped gain preservation legislation for Mariposa Grove and what later became part of Yosemite National Park, occupied the Wawona area in 1855 and established a tourist rest and modest ranch which he later sold and made into a hotel and resort property (the Wawona Hotel). The Wawona post office was established in 1878 and was originally called Clark's Station.
The Redwoods In Yosemite has over 110 vacation rental homes and is proud to say that all of them are located in Wawona. All are within walking distance of everything that Wawona has to offer and every one of them is surrounded by the majesty of Yosemite National Park!

Nice cabin could use some updates. Cons: The cabin does not have AC which may not be noticed if you're not staying in July but it got a bit warm in the middle of the day. It cooled down at night so it was only an issue if we were there midday. The beds were VERY firm so if that's not your cup of tea I would look else where. Lastly, if you've never been to Yosemite the park is huge and up a mountain, so it takes time to get to the attractions. The cabin is an hour and some change drive from the Valley of Yosemite which is the area where all the pictures you see are from. I did not handle driving up the mountain well, so if you plan to visit this area of the park more than once it's something you may want to take into to consideration. Pros: very close to Mariposa Grove which has giant sequoias, there's also the sugar pine railroad which was fun. You can also ride horse back (or hike but we're not hikers) to see the Chilulana water fall which is right up the road from the cabin. The cabin has a great deck to watch wildlife and enjoy the trees. Staff was very friendly. There are small grocery stores nearby but if you're needing a big grocery run stop in Oakhurst before you get to the cabin on your way up.

As a group of 5 friends, we enjoyed our stay. The place was clean and had everything we needed. The grill was nice to have. The only issue was the WiFi not working. The maintenance guy had us connect to the WiFi next door. But we could only access it from the living room. It took a little over 30 minutes to get to Yosemite Valley, but it was still a good location considering it’s still inside the park. We would definitely stay here again.

This was our first trip to Yosemite, and we all had a wonderful time. We all loved the cabin. It was a great home base while exploring the park. The cabin is clean and well maintained and we were all comfortable. I would not hesitate to rent this property again.

Wawona is a great place to stay while visiting Yosemite and this house is the perfect home base. I wanted to mention that we locked ourselves out of the house at 11:30 pm and a staff member responded to our call very quickly. We were back inside in no time. The redwoods staff was very friendly and helpful. Thanks redwoods!
