About the Area

Nestled just 4 miles inside the southern entrance of Yosemite National Park is the charming and historic town of Wawona. Located at the base of Chilnualna Falls (the second-highest vertical-drop waterfall in Yosemite) and home to the principal trailheads into the southern Yosemite wilderness, Wawona is also the closest town to the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias.
Wawona has the feel of a small town but is bustling with activity! Over 160 residents, including Yosemite Park employees, live in Wawona and can be seen gathering at the town's community center, playing a pickup game of basketball at the elementary school, jogging on one of the many picturesque trails, or simply walking their dogs and baby strollers through the winding residential streets. The historic Wawona Swinging Bridge boasts the best natural water slide in the Park! The history village is filled with docents, stagecoach rides, horseback rides, and barn dances in the summer season, and the Wawona Meadow Loop offers year-round riparian meadow wildlife viewing.
Wawona was known to the local Native American Miwok as Pallachun (a good place to stay). It is located entirely within Yosemite National Park (it preceded the founding of the park as a national recreation area), and is located on the South Fork of the wild and scenic Merced River, on the main highway (State Route 41) from Fresno to Yosemite Valley.
Galen Clark, who helped gain preservation legislation for Mariposa Grove and what later became part of Yosemite National Park, occupied the Wawona area in 1855 and established a tourist rest and modest ranch, which he later sold and made into a hotel and resort property (the Wawona Hotel). The Wawona post office was established in 1878 and was originally called Clark's Station.
The Redwoods in Yosemite has over 120 vacation rental homes and is proud to say that all of them are located in Wawona. All are within walking distance to everything that Wawona has to offer and every one of them is surrounded by the majesty of Yosemite National Park!

This was a great place to stay, within Yosemite, and a very nice alternative to a hotel in Yosemite Valley. The 60-ish minute drive to Yosemite Valley was scenic and beautiful, especially with a stop at Tunnel View. Mariposa Grove was so close! And the stream/river that runs around the cabins here was fun to explore. Loved that the hosts had many, many guidebooks and maps of Yosemite - very helpful. Cabin was cozy and outdoor seating gave us another place to hang out, even in the rain.

Easy checking and many pluses through out. Weather was beautiful and fairly cool. A bit dried out in the Fall. Donner Pass was quite interesting. Hopefully return in the Spring.

Property was set in the most peaceful location. We had a wonderful 3 days of chilling, hiking, running and cooking in a well appointed cabin. Thank you to the owners for leaving so many extras to use while cooking and the fabulous coffee machine. We absolutely loved our stay.

We were lucky enough to snag cottage 39 fairly close to our trip date. The cottage comes fully equipped with cooking pots/pans, utensils and dishes. The market is just down the road with movies, snacks, alcohol, ice, fresh fruit/veggies and frozen meals. A/C worked great…it was 39 degrees when we were there. Great find!

We stayed a this wonderful property from 8/1 - 8/4. The property was perfect for our party of 5 (3 adults + 2 kids). The house had everything we needed and was super clean and cute. We didn't have enough time to explore the property at Wawona, but it did give us a great launch point to wake up early and explore Yosemite valley. I will definitely try to stay here again in the near future and would highly recommend

Pros: We recently stayed at this property for 6 nights. The cabin was very well equipped with coffee/coffee maker, pots, pans, utensils, paper towels, etc. There were board games to play at night that we thoroughly enjoyed. Beds were comfortable and showers had an abundance of hot water. The cabin seemed to be clean overall. Cons: The pictures on the website are outdated. The immediate area surrounding the cabin was overgrown and unkempt, with fallen trees right next to and behind it. The featured picnic table by an attractive stream was unusable- completely overgrown brush and a fallen tree obstructing it. The entire stream area was overgrown so nothing like the nicely landscaped photo. The deck is peeling all over, the cushions were tired and stained and the artificial flowers pictured in the photos were faded, worn and covered in cobwebs. The grill is not brand new as would be suggested by the price tag hanging from it in the photo. Also, the propane tank was empty- we emailed about it through VRBO on Monday. No response until I emailed again on Thursday. They promptly replaced the propane and indicated to phone the office directly with concerns. The cabin had an odor that was evident each time we re-entered. Maybe mold or mildew. Lastly, the decor is 'homey' but a bit dark and dated. I think some TLC/updating is needed. Hopefully all of this info is helpful when making your decision.

This 1950s cabin reminded us of our grandparents' home - it was a lovely, nostalgic experience! But don't let the vintage tag confuse you - modern appliances in the kitchen and bathrooms. Just a WONDERFUL experience all around!

The place was comfortable and quiet, with all the kitchen supplies we needed, a fab deck and grill, and cable TV for evening wind-down.
