San Luis Obispo, California
We gladly welcome all families, couples, and outdoor adventurists seeking a once in a lifetime experience in the coastal mountains of Central California. Stone Mountain Retreat is a licensed residential vacation rental property in the county of SLO [LIC# 6006917], and offers a 200-acre getaway landscape. Recently purchased from an amazing family who loved and stewarded the land for over 100 years, this space has been passionately co-created with loving intent to provide our guests a safe harbor to connect with God, self, and loved ones.
As you make your way to the cabin, your adventure starts with your journey up a ~3-mile dirt road [Note: Low ground clearance vehicles are not recommended due to dirt speed bumps installed prior to reaching the property]. In a matter of minutes, you’ll find yourself surrounded in the most beautiful landscape on the coast that sets the stage for complete relaxation. We highly recommend taking the drive in with the radio off, sunroof open if you have one, and windows rolled down as it enhances the experience of hearing nature, creeks flowing from the mountains next to your vehicle, and catching the shadows of the sun peeking through the canopy of oak, sycamore and laurel trees covering the open road to this tucked away sanctuary in the mountains. It truly is the central coast’s Secret Garden, as the plush green ecosystem is well known for breathing life into all that come and visit.
As a guest, you’ll get to experience many of the friendly animals on the property - deer, foxes, wild turkeys, lizards, and a variety of birds such as the red-tailed hawks, blue jays, hummingbirds, sparrows, woodpeckers, robins, finches, and great-horned owls.
Although minutes away from local attractions and adventures of the beach and downtown SLO, guests will have the unique experience of true seclusion. Our rental provides privacy to be free, awake the adventurous heart, and remind us all that it is okay to be a kid again.

Amazing cabin tucked away in the valley, the hike was great, the road in was rough so be prepared but that doesn't take away from the experience because once you are in you don't want to leave. Could've spent a week here if I had more time.
This property was beautiful and gave us the get away we needed. It is remote, but our 4Runner handled the 3 mile dirt road with no problem. The hike to the top of the mountain was stunning and the primary bathroom shower was like showering in the forest. If you have the right car to get there, it's truly a great escape.
Lovely secluded cabin in the woods. We were here after Xmas, but kept thinking that it would be a great place for the family in the spring or early summer (not too hot). The house was very comfortable for family togetherness. A big plus was the stocked kitchen - both for condiments and cook ware. We actually cooked real meals! Glad we had our SUV for the 3 mile dirt road on the way in - an adventure in itself! Chad was very good about keeping in touch.
The property is very secluded, which is great if you want to get away. However, dealing with the Hosts was less than pleasant. We arrived at the property after a 4-1/2 hour drive. It was cold inside the property. I called Chad, the host, for directions on turning on the furnace. I was told, “did you read the guest manual?”. Jessica, the other host, also said the same thing. After a long drive, the last thing I or my husband wanted to do was read a stupid manual. There was another time prior to our arrival when I asked a question and Chad told me the same thing, “read the manual”. On our first night, around 2:00 am, the house loss power. I was asleep but my husband was aware and later that morning, when I woke up, he told me we had no power. Luckily, around 10:00 am, the power came back on. We left to go sightseeing, and came back when it was getting dark. We had minimal lights on since we knew the house was powered by a solar power. Nonetheless, the power went out again and we were in the dark except for candles and our flashlight. We called Chad who sent out a repair person, Craig. One of Craig’s first question was, “did you read the manual.” Craig then proceeded to try and fix the problem. At one point he tried to turn on the backup generator. It didn’t work but it did fill the house up with a lot of exhaust fumes. We stayed without power for the rest of the night. In the morning we went out. Later on, I received a call from Jessica, letting me know the problem wouldn’t be fixed until the following week. She said we would receive a refund. Jessica was very apologetic. We hurried back to the property and packed our bags as quickly as possible as we wanted to get on the road asap for our long drive back. We left dishes in the sink since we couldn’t use the dishwasher because of the lack of power. I received an email later from Chad, letting us know he had refunded us for the nights we hadn’t stayed plus the night Craig had been there. However, we were still going to be charged for the first night, plus any Vrbo fees and a cleaning fee. Basically, it was over $700 for just the one night. I responded back to Chad and advised him that Jessica had said we would be receiving a full refund which makes sense because even though we did stay for one night, our vacation in total was ruined since it was too late to make vacation plans elsewhere. I never heard back from Chad regarding the full refund.
This property was comfortable and very quiet. It was more secluded than we expected, and it was a pleasant surprise! So quiet, tranquil, and relaxing. I recommend this property if you are looking for a quiet get-a-way from the hustle and bustle.
The hosts and house were terrific. The amazing part is the location. Very remote and beautiful forests of oaks. The hike to the top of the mountain was probably a few miles on a private walk which was beautiful and the destination at the top had very dramatic views. The property description is understated compared to the actual hike.
Magical and remote, surrounded by nature
If you want to get away and just chill, hike, meditate and recharge - this is your place! Get back to nature!
Very nice stay. Quiet Just what was needed
Travel on a long,, very slow, deeply rutted dirt road which is completely dark at night and treacherous even for our 4 wheel drive SUV, is required to reach this cabin, which is in an extremely dry, fire risk forested area. We live part time in a mountain cabin in the woods and fully understand the nature of safe exits, which this place does not have. The cabin itself is quite a bit more down at the heels than the photos suggest, and It had not been cleaned when we arrived at our allotted time. We walked away from the money we had put down for a long stay. Even if the fire risk doesn't worry you, the rental rate should be half of what it is for what you are getting. The owner politely refunded only the cleaning fee and damage deposit.
