About the Area

Nestled just 4 miles inside the southern entrance of Yosemite National Park is the charming and historic town of Wawona. Located at the base of Chilnualna Falls (the second-highest vertical-drop waterfall in Yosemite) and home to the principal trailheads into the southern Yosemite wilderness, Wawona is also the closest town to the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias.
Wawona has the feel of a small town but is bustling with activity! Over 160 residents, including Yosemite Park employees, live in Wawona and can be seen gathering at the town's community center, playing a pickup game of basketball at the elementary school, jogging on one of the many picturesque trails, or simply walking their dogs and baby strollers through the winding residential streets. The historic Wawona Swinging Bridge boasts the best natural water slide in the Park! The history village is filled with docents, stagecoach rides, horseback rides, and barn dances in the summer season, and the Wawona Meadow Loop offers year-round riparian meadow wildlife viewing.
Wawona was known to the local Native American Miwok in their language as Pallachun (a good place to stay). It is located entirely within Yosemite National Park (it preceded the founding of the park as a national recreation area) and is located on the South Fork of the wild and scenic Merced River, on the main highway (State Route 41) from Fresno to Yosemite Valley.
Galen Clark, who helped gain preservation legislation for Mariposa Grove and what later became part of Yosemite National Park, occupied the Wawona area in 1855 and established a tourist rest and modest ranch, which he later sold and made into a hotel and resort property (the Wawona Hotel). The Wawona post office was established in 1878 and was originally called Clark's Station.
The Redwoods in Yosemite has over 120 vacation rental homes and is proud to say that all of them are located in Wawona. All are within walking distance of everything that Wawona has to offer, and every one of them is surrounded by the majesty of Yosemite National Park!

We enjoyed our stay at Chipmunk Hollow. The cabin was quaint and comfortable. We enjoyed eating on the deck. We had all we needed in the kitchen to prepare the meals. It was beautiful to see the stars at night. We will go back if the opportunity arises.

Very close to Wawona Hotel, not far from Mariposa Grove and about an hour drive to the Valley and to Glacier Point. Inside the park, so no park entry reservations or lines to deal with once you're there. Modest and cozy, everything worked. Friendly and helpful staff. No A/C (plenty of fans), so during an intense heat wave it was hot in the cabin a few times by late afternoon, but never too hot to be outside on the shady deck, and it cooled down nicely by bedtime.

Be prepared to check in with Redwoods Yosemite Management prior to occupying cabin. That wasn't indicated in our VRBO instructions. Luckily, we chose to stop by a nearby management office to use their phone(due to no cell reception), & discovered that was the procedure to check in. Had we arrived 1 hour later, we would have been unaware of the after hours check in procedures Otherwise, our accommodations were perfect & would gladly stay again.

The stay was more than we could've asked for and was a perfect cabin for two adults. Very quiet, peaceful, and beautiful community with a hiking trail and river 3 minutes away! The cabin itself accommodated all of our needs- kitchen was large enough to cook a nice meal one of our nights. Lots of pots, pans, and dishes provided. The porch was the best spot to relax and drink coffee in the morning while watching the summer wildlife! We saw a large deer on our walk to the hiking trail. Few very minor improvements could be made- the carpet was still very dirty and crumby when we arrived (everything else was clean though). Also when we arrived, the lady that gave us our key envelope at the front desk didn't tell us the directions to our cabin were INSIDE the envelope (we assumed only the keys were in there) so we were lost for a bit and had to go back to her. Make sure to look into the envelope for easy directions to your cabin, otherwise navigation through phone apps can be tricky.

Loved the cabin except smaller than expected. Bedroom was so small and very hard to move around to get out to use the bathroom. There is a ottoman directly in the line of the bathroom. Both me and my hubby both stubbed our toes going to bathroom in middle of night. Dining table is way to large for such a small room. Kitchen is more like a kitchenette, if you plan on fixing all your meals this is not the cabin for you. Last but not least book directly from Redwoods as you can book a bigger unit for less money!

We didn’t really no what to expect as we had never visited Yosemite before and were not familiar with the area where the cabin was. When we arrived we approached the location where the cabin was situated amidst quite a few other cabins. It was laid back down a small little road shaded by just the right amount of trees. From the outside, the cabin was very cute and well maintained with a nice sized deck with a small table and a gas bbq. Having a grill on the deck is pretty much a requirement for me as I bbq quite a bit. The grill was clean and worked great as it got hot enough to grill steaks very well. On the inside, the small little cabin was the perfect size for me and my wife and the layout of the rooms was great. The kitchen had just about everything you might need to cook a wide variety of meals as well as a coffee maker. The gas stove was great and worked well and the refrigerator was just the right size for everything we needed to cold or frozen. The bed was comfortable and the bedroom was great with a nice Chester drawer and a good size closet that also had a nice vacuum in it to vacuum up any pine needles or debris you might track into the house. The location of the cabin is away from the valley and craziness of most of the tourists that flood the park. I doubt that many of the other cabins are setup quite as nicely as this one and if we are ever able to make it back here we would love to stay here.

The little cabin that we usually rent wasn't available for this trip so we choose Cabin 14. It is our new favorite! We love the size, and the fireplace was a real treat. It was equipped with everything that we needed for a retreat.

our stay was more than amazing! The staff and locals were great, accommodating, and friendly. We went for xmas and were looking to obtain solitude and serenity from the city and thats exactly what was achieved. Daily trips to the river, let the dogs run, star gazing and stoking of the fire were all our favorites. Lots to do in the area but we decided to stay to our cabin and relax and read. Thanks Yosemite! We will come again soon!
