Taos, New Mexico
This apartment is right downtown and convenient to everything Taos has to offer including restaurants, shops, galleries and museums.
For five years this was my popular shop Red Cat Melissiana. One day I realized my passion was Vacation Rentals (I have 11) and not retail so it was time to re invent myself once again... Red Cat Melissiana Apartment is located in an 1880's building with all the charm of old Taos and so much history. Originally this was a street with small homes and shops across the street from the Plaza and the original Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. This street was once the Red Light District of Taos with a network of underground tunnels leading to interesting destinations and all kinds of varied stories. There are many spirit activity reports for juicy stories to share. Just ask me...
This apartment is now a newly re furbished space decorated with my antiques, original art and sense of whimsy throughout. It's everything you could want on your vacation for 1-4 guests and so very 'Taos'.
Built in the 1880's, the building has many wooden vigas (ceiling beams), creaky old wood floors, 14" walls and many windows.
The living room has a queen sofa sleeper with a gel foam mattress and sleeps an additional two guests with bedding stored in antique trunk/coffee table. ($25 per person per night) There is a big flat screen TV if TV is something you want on your vacation. It's located in a one of a kind cupboard in the living room behind closed doors. I also have a record player and albums for that retro feel.
The bedroom features a queen bed with high end bedding and a decorative quilt. There is a trastero/armoire for your clothing and just leave your robes at home since there are two just waiting for your cozy moments here.
The kitchen features an eclectic tiled counter, vintage cooktop, sink and refrigerator combo. It is well equipped and offers all amenities for any cooking at home. Table for two-four and extra chairs if you need them.
The bathroom features a fully tiled corner shower and a sink set in an antique Mexican cabinet. There are lots of towels and any supplies you might need.
Winter heat is provided by two stoves. One gas and one electric. Operate gas log stove only by the wall thermostat. NEVER turn off main gas line. For summer there are ceiling fans and a swamp cooler, but the 14" thick walls keep this space comfortable year round.
If you visit in spring, summer or fall you can enjoy 'Melissa's Secret Garden' a private little private oasis under a box elder tree surrounded by container plants, a wall fountain, outdoor lighting and lots of assemblage garden art. I am also offer a BBQ grill and string lights so my guests can enjoy this outdoor space.
My style of decor is Melissiana Eclectic. What is this it's a mix and match style with antiques, yard sale and consignment treasures, original art and more--always fun things for my guests to discover, appreciate and enjoy.
This downtown historic building actually has three private apartments and is perfect for single travelers and couples or combine the three and bring a bigger group of friends and families. The three apartments will sleep up to ten guests in total. All kinds of possibilities (Check out my other two apartments on this street Vrbo 422849 (the Red Cat House) and Vrbo 513557 (Casa Flora)
As with all of my properties this apartment is dog friendly. I provide dog sheets for bed and sofa as well as a decorated mutt mitt box in the side courtyard. $10 per night per dog. Just leave on kitchen table.
Great prices, nicely furnished with a quirky sense of style, well equipped, comfortable beds, old adobe with thick walls for peaceful nights and privacy, right downtown and parking across the street. WOW!
Very charming apartment style accommodations. Loved it from the moment we walked in.
Cute and quaint
Property was kitschy, just as described. Nice downtown location. Very fun. Would recommend for 2. Pull out couch was fine but not great for us old gals. Thanks for the great stay!
My two friends and I enjoyed staying so close to the town square and were able to walk everywhere to shop and eat at all the fun and interesting places. Melissa was easy to communicate with and made sure we had her information to contact her if we needed to during our stay. The area we stayed in gave us plenty of room and was comfortable for us.
Studio that was quaint and felt very traditional. Small kitchen area, full bathroom, bed and sofa bed with a small side/backyard. Kitchen has fridge/sink/two electric burner combo that seemed sufficient for small meals. There are two swamp coolers and a window A/C in the front area. The place was very close to lots of shops and restaurants. I think we visited during the low season so there were no issues with finding parking across the street but if it was high season I think I would be anxious about not having a dedicated spot.
Cool hundreds of year old adobe building, beautifully decorated. 200 feet from the plaza. We were not wanting for anything. We really enjoyed our stay!
Nice
This adorable apartment was just what we were looking for! The bed and sofa were super comfy and it's very close walking distance from the plaza and all the neat little shops in downtown Taos. It was a great base for exploring the town, and a soothing retreat for a cup of tea and a good book when the weather got bad. We were even able to cook ourselves a decent breakfast on the funky retro stove/sink/fridge combo. I only wish the otherwise well-appointed kitchen had at least one kitchen knife -- it's tough to slice an apple with a butter knife! Loved it, and we'd love to come back.
Will be back to this apartment next time!
We really enjoyed the property and the location. The quirky decor was great. The property while clean could use a thorough dusting. Also the mattress and pillows need replacing.
Exactly as advertised and the perfect spot for a long ski weekend. Best of both worlds - easy drive to ski and right in the heart of Taos for afternoon/evenings! Would definitely stay here again.
Nothing about this review is intended to dispute or take away from the overview provided by the host, which is absolutely accurate. However, what this means in person is worth considering, allowing you to better assess fit for you. It is a studio- the bed and living are separated by a screen and open bookcase. The bed and kitchen are separated by a half wall. The space is LOUD. You are literally on the street facing a parking lot, and you can hear your neighbor, particularly when they are in the bathroom or kitchen. The decorations are extensive. There is no space for your items if you like to be organized, or have them somewhere other than the floor. The one wardrobe was full of sheets so you could only use hangers. Shelves are full, desktop is full, mantel is full, etc. The kitchen does not have an oven or real freezer space. My ice pack for my knee (we were on a ski trip) did not fit in the freezer shelf. The bathroom is charming- but the sink is not terribly accessible for anything beyond hands. To end on a positive note, if your intention is to explore Taos via walking- you could not be in a better location. Again, everything the host says is true, but in reality we found the studio not workable for us and our dog. Despite having booked five nights we left after one night, and unfortunately ended up paying for two lodgings.
We could walk to pretty much everything we needed. The apartment is a really nice space, comfortable, warm in this cold February. We had a great trip.
The house was exactly as described and was a very enjoyable and a comfortable stay for myself, my husband and our 2 kids. The house was fully stocked from plates, cups, bath supplies, etc. We definitely recommend staying here and hope to do it again ourselves!
Unique, comfortable bed, awkward bathroom, small kitchenette
the place was perfectly taos from top to bottom. and very spacious- could easily have had 4 people, except for the bathroom - the shower is very tight
Location ideal, property quirkey...very Taos, spacious living/bedroom area, very good bed with bed warmer. Bathroom was tiny, sink not very conveniently located, but good water pressure. Kitchen also small, not equipped for cooking properly: 2 burner stove, small fridge froze over, no cutting knives, utensils, etc. Overall a really fun place for 2-3 day visits, not 2 weeks extended stays.
good experiece
Great location near the Plaza. Active area - gets quiet around bedtime. Unique style and furnishings. Comfortable place with easy access to the Taos area.
Enjoyed the Casita with one exception. Could not use cute outdoor area due to skunks. Saw on immediately and smelled thru out stay. As we brought our dog this was an issue. Easy walk to Plaza If you are wanting a quiet retreat this is probably not the best choice for you. But we enjoyed it.
This place was everything!! The antiques and New Mexico flair-right up my alley! The little courtyard was so dang charming. This is walking distance to the main hub, so perfect location! I am late reviewing, but its been on my mind and I will definitely return!!
The property was fantastic! This was my second year to rent from Melissa on VRBO. The location was fantastic! Accommodations were just right. Will definitely try to rent from her for next year.
Our first time to Vrbo!! This property was very clean and comfortable! Great location! My husband was very skeptical about the whole rental thing but he was very pleased!
Very clean , heavily decorated with rustic items. Shower very small and has slippery floor. Bathroom sink has over cabinet that makes doing more than washing hands difficult. Location was close to all downtown areas . Bed was comfortable. Kitchen was sufficient for our stay. Overall was an enjoyable experience
Our weekend visit to Taos and Northern New Mexico was all the better because of our wonderful stay and accommodations at Melissa's home. The unique and clever decor is inviting, the location is central, and Melissa is the perfect host - thank you!
