Crop Over: Crop Over, a five-week summer festival, is Barbados' most popular and colorful festival. It's origins can be traced back to the 1780's, a time when Barbados was the world's largest producer of sugar. At the end of the sugar season, there was always a huge celebration to mark the culmination of another successful sugar cane harvest - the Crop Over celebration.
As the sugar industry in Barbados declined, so too did the Crop Over festival and in the 1940's the festival was terminated completely. However, the festival was revived in 1974 and other elements of Barbadian culture were infused to make the extravaganza that exists today ..... an event that attracts thousands of people from across the globe.
Jazz Festival: The Premiere Jazz Festival of The Caribbean
The Barbados Jazz Festival, which celebrates the best in international and local jazz talent, has become a major annual Caribbean event.
The venues for the festival also reflect the diverse nature of the festival. The modern Sir Garfield Sobers gymnasium suits a large crowd. The open air Farley Hill National Park is ideal for a day of picnicking and jazz. The lovely Sunbury Plantation House is over 300 years old and steeped in history.
Thoroughbred Horse Racing: The racetrack in Barbados is at the Garrison Savannah which is less than two miles outside the capital Bridgetown. It has been the home of horse racing since the colonial days of 1845. The officers of the British Regiment who were stationed in Barbados, used what was then the parade ground to match their horses in races and the wealthy merchants and planters later joined them.
The Barbados Turf Club, which regulates and promotes horse racing in Barbados, was established in 1905 and organizes three (3) seasons of racing per year. These meetings run from January to April; May to August and from October to December.
The track is a 6 furlongs oval grass strip and races are run at distances of 5 furlongs (1000 meters); 5½ furlongs (1100 meters); 7.8 furlongs (1570 meters); 9 furlongs (1800 meters) and 10 furlongs (2000 meters), with the horses running in a clockwise (right handed) direction.
Enjoyed our stay here at Spring Court. Nice and quiet. Pool was very nice. Neighbours were quiet also.
Great property. Easy access to beach and restaurants and groceries
I had a fantastic stay at this apartment. It's beautifully maintained with a balcony and nice pool area. It's about 20 minutes walk from the nearest shops and Accra beach so it really adds to your experience if you hire a car. Cathrin and her agent, Brian, were extremely well-organised and helpful. Would thoroughly recommend (and I hope to go back some time)
My wife and I are from Michigan USA and prefer to holiday in Feb/March to escape a little from our snow and cold weather. This was our first trip to Barbados and it was fabulous. We rented a car so we had our mobility and really got a sense of the diverse geography and culture. Many wonderful restaurants and beaches. Too many to mention (Shaker's, Mama Mias, Uncle George's in Oisten and The Cliff, etc). Rockley beach is one of the best on the island and is only two kilometers away. Cathrin's villa was truly a home 'Away from Home' - it is on the second floor in a very quiet neighborhood.
The apartment was clean and cosy felt just like home. Beautifully decorated with a lovely balcony. We enjoyed mornings on the balcony having coffee and seeing the monkeys and roosters on our walks into town. The walk down to the beach was our daily ritual. The beaches in Barbados are spectacular. It was a little bit further than we expected and missed having a grocery store near by. It required a bit of planning everyday. However, we found out much to late that you could call in and they would deliver groceries. They also have a service which drives you home as well which is free but you can sometimes wait over 30minutes for a ride. The home is Easily accessible to transportation that gets you anywhere you want to go on the island. The fare is $2.00. The access to the swimming pool was great and I enjoyed it on a few occasions. Would highly recommend as a great place to stay. Cathrin thank you for sharing your beautiful place.
Fabulous - the most relaxing & enjoyable 12 days we have had in a long while. Location gave us many opptions - but we did hired a car to explore the island. Cooked fresh fish bought from the fish market which was a real treat. Had Breakfast on the balcony watching & talking to the wonderful variety of birds whilst also being entertained by the monkeys. The flat was beautifully decorated & well equipped & easy to manage. Last but not least the people are wonderful - they were always charming helpful & with a wicked sense of humour. We will be back - loved Barbados & loved your flat Cathrin ???
What a wonderful small (two adults) apartment in a very quiet location close golf course and within walking distance to Rockley/Accra beach facility, shops and centrally located between Bridgetown and Oistins and not far from St Lawrence Gap. The apartment boasts all household facilities making it feel like 'home from home'. Initially it can be a little hard to find if you take a taxi from the airport and the driver does not know the area but if you follow the map provided and watch for the landmarks it should not he a problem. The apartment complex, although small, is very well maintained and the local agent/manager, Brian, made us feel welcomed and on hand if and when any problems arise. We'd definitely recommend this to anyone looking for somewhere to stay on the South West part of the island and I'm recommending it at the moment to my sister in Trinidad. If and when we return to Barbados we'd look to stay here again.
This was our first holiday to Barbados and we have had the most amazing time. We had a long flight delay, but this was no trouble as Brian was happy to meet us at the apartment not matter how late we arrived. He was very welcoming and helpful. Cathrin, the owner always replies quickly to emails and answered all our questions. The apartment is lovely, a real home from home. The complex is small and quiet and everyone was really friendly. The walk down to the beach does take 20-30 mins but we really enjoyed the walk. There is a car hire place nearby, Top car rentals, they were very helpful and we were able to hire a car at short notice. The local ZR buses are brilliant, an experience not to be missed and at 2 barbadian dollars each, a very cheap way of travelling around the island. The local supermarket, Masseys, is quite a walk away, probably about 30 mins which is not ideal in the heat but they do have a courtesy bus which will bring you home so this is perfect. Eating out is quite expensive but we did enjoy some lovely places. Shakers is a must, look at the recent reviews on trip advisor. A little shack that we would have walked past, but the food was beautiful, would definitely recommend the blackened fish!! The staff were really friendly but you need to book as they are always busy. A trip to St. Nicholas Abbey is also worth a visit, a beautiful setting, lots of history and a lovely cafe! So many wonderful memories of our first trip to Barbados, will not be our last. Thank you to Cathrin for providing such a lovely base.
Loved staying at this address. We saw a different side of Barbados this time round. We walked everywhere and enjoyed the residential area. All the locals we met was friendly and all just fitted into our plan spot on.The accomadation was like home from home.Even shopping was a leisurely walk to the masseys store with their minibus free bus back. All in all a great setting and we was both pleased with this type of stay.
This lovely little apartment was perfect for our stay, it is very quiet, but still only 5 minutes car ride into the Gap, with plenty of restaurants. We rang a taxi each night from the home phone & they arrived promptly within 3 minutes every night (we did have a car, but only used this during the day to explore, as we do like our bottle of wine in the evenings). We saw monkeys playing daily from the balcony , even running across the pool area (which we had to ourselves), humming birds also visited constantly on the feeder, which we placed home made nectar in. ( 1 part sugar to 4 parts boiling water in a cup, allow to cool & fill up the feeder). We actually didn't want to leave the balcony ! However we did manage to explore all of this beautiful island.......The booking process was easy & Cathrin was always on hand for any questions via email. Brian from the management company met us at the apartment with the keys and showed us around, he was on hand if we needed him. Don't delay, book today, you won't regret it. We can't wait to go back, thank you Cathrin for letting us share your gorgeous home & to Brian for all your help.
