My family and I had a pleasant relaxing time at this property, The owners were welcoming and friendly they provided helpful information and recommendations of the South Portland/Portland surrounding areas. Between the beach, walking/biking trails, breweries, and restaurants there was plenty to explore.
I didn't realize what a lovely neighborhood Willard Beach is! I felt like I was walking in a pretty painting of Maine every day. Even with a mixed bag of weather, each day and night was beautiful on the beach. Darrell (host) was great, responsive to requests and questions, made a big effort to help my dog feel welcome (her first beach vacation!). The house is comfortable, the garden spectacular, the beach ridiculously nice and very close. Location very close to Old Port for a fun day or two of window shopping and lunch. I look forward to returning!
Relaxing beautiful area great back yard. Owners are very accommodating. Could use updating, peeling paint in bathroom etc. Blinds could be cordless and updated easier to use. We could have used another fan (we did not use air conditioning) Also, we did not have any check in instructions. I think this was an honest mistake. Wouldn’t hold it against them. Definitely recommend! We will likely go back.
We had a wonderful stay at this property! The location is literally steps from the beach! It’s a discreet, side entrance to the beach, so it’s never crowded or loud. We were able to fall asleep and wake up to the sound of the waves and visit the beach easily throughout the day. The rental has a nice layout so everyone is able to have some space. The back yard is a beautiful garden, very spacious with plenty of spots to play and dine. The hosts are very welcoming and kind, while still offering the convenience of contactless check-in and check-out. We’re so grateful for such a memorable vacation and hope to return again soon!
We rented the apartment pictured in the listing (unit 2), but were placed in a different unit without notification (unit 1). Unit 1 was filthy with dust, human hair, stained carpets, a greasy kitchen, and ant infestation in the kitchen and bathroom. Our toddler dropped a cookie crumb and ants swarmed it as they do on the sidewalk. There were no curtains in the main bedroom so with the bright street light right outside the window, it was difficult to sleep. Also, we had to wake up at sunrise. We felt like we were in a really slummy college apartment. It was just gross. When we complained to Darrell, his solution was to put baking soda all over the floor to kill the ants. Weird. Then he offered us the unit across the hall (unit 2) because the tenant had just vacated that day (Monday). We were desperate with our infant and toddler and decided to accept. We then realized that unit 2 was the apartment we had ACTUALLY rented and it was not even available for the first two nights of our stay! These owners don’t have their rentals professionally cleaned between tenants. They change the sheets on the beds, that’s it. We spent hours cleaning the second filthy apartment in a desperate attempt to save our vacation. We had so much baby gear with our two little kids, trying to find a new rental and moving would be nearly impossible. And because this awful apartment was an improvement from the even worse apartment, our perception was probably distorted. So we sucked it up and tried to sweep and vacuum up all the dog hair that covered everything including the beds. We cleaned the fridge, removed the mold covered bath mat, cleaned the tub, and scrubbed the layers of dog spit off the kitchen floor. We bought toilet paper, hand soap, paper towels, and sponges. All of which weren’t provided!!! We set up the pack and plays again and tried to make the best of it. We should have just left from the beginning. We stayed in Unit 2 for four nights until we realized that lead paints chips were blowing in from the window sills and littering the carpet. The house is in disrepair and most of the windows didn’t even open. The paint is badly chipping and clearly lead, as it’s an old home. Very dangerous with young children especially because the apartments never get properly cleaned and are full of dust. This is when we freaked out and left. Moved to a hotel for our last night. Darrell refunded 1/3 of our stay. His wife Judith was rude and unwelcoming. Bad people.
We had a great stay in Maine-- fabulous location at Willard Beach and convenient to all the comforts of home!
A charming apartment filled with antique details 20 steps from Willard beach. The best part was the thoughtfulness and kindness of Judy and Darrell. The backyard is one huge garden with multiple places for eating and relaxing. They've made it a special place to stay.
This property is so ideal and the owners are lovely. I’ve now visited 2 yrs and hope to return again next year.
It really is just steps from Willard Beach! Lovely place! Big beautiful old building with a gorgeous back yard. And a very large apartment all to ourselves. Darrell is always available for whatever you need. Very nice man. We’d stay here again in a heart beat.
Just 30 feet from the beach entrance, this first floor apt is both convenient and captures views and breezes. Onsite owners are friendly and available for suggestions. Back yard is meticulous and a wonderful respite with many places to sit. Apartment is aptly portrayed in the pictures and, fortunately, included a small AC window unit that was welcome when we arrived in 90 degree heat. Several fans were also provided and were all that was needed for most of the time. Walking or biking distance to everything in SoPo.
