Background and Weather Here –
Tempe is located in Maricopa County, Arizona and was once known as Hayden’s Ferry. This city is named after the “Vale of Tempe” which is located in Greece. The population here as of 2017 was more than 185,000. Tempe can be found in the East Valley portion of metropolitan Phoenix. Tempe borders Phoenix and Guadalupe on the West, Scottsdale on the North, Chandler on the South and Mesa on the East. According to the United States Census Bureau, Tempe is approximately 40 square miles in size with a very small portion of that being water. The climate here in Tempe is a very interesting one. It is what is known as a “Tropical and Subtropical Desert” climate. Most places here in Arizona have a “Desert” climate but Tempe is a little different. Typically, in desert climates there is virtually no rain and that really does not differ here. Tempe only receives 9 inches of rain per year. The national average is 39. There is zero snowfall here since the temperature will rarely fall below 40 degrees during the winter. The hottest part of the year here goes from the end of May until the end of September when the daily average high is a staggering 100 degrees. The low for this time is in the mid 80’s. So, the summer months here do tend to get a bit hot. The coolest part of the year here goes from the end of November until the end of February when the daily average high is 73 degrees. The low for this time is just about 44 degrees. The summer months can often see temperatures shoot up to 111 degrees. Since the climate here is partly a desert climate, the air can often feel very dry. That is because there is hardly any humidity in the air since there is virtually no precipitation.
Major Employers and Arizona Mills –
There are many large companies here in Tempe that help boost the economy. Arizona State University employs just shy of 8,800 people and State Farm employs roughly 8,500. These are the two of the largest employers here in Tempe. Besides them, Wells Fargo employs 3,300 people, US Airways employs more than 2,500, ABM Industries employs a little more than 2,000, JP Morgan Chase employs just under 2,000 and the Tempe Elementary School District employs about 1,700 people. Besides these employers, there is Arizona Mills which is an indoor shopping mall. This 1.2 million square foot mall has more than 200 retailers and was opened back in 1997. This shopping mall not only employs several hundred people, it is also one of the biggest tourist attractions here in Tempe. This mall is so large that is has more than 6,000 parking spots! Think about the fun you could have here on the weekend!
Hughes Acres and The Lakes –
“Hughes Acres” is a neighborhood that is located less than 7 minutes from Arizona State University. This area is perfect for people who want to live in an urban setting. The homes here can be found in the heart of downtown Tempe. Here you have the option to either drive or walk to local recreation. Most people who live here prefer to walk to local eateries and shops. Having such proximity to Arizona State University allows you to visit there for football games as often as you would like. There are also several night clubs here since it is located so close to a college campus. This really helps appeal to a younger demographic. This is one area of Tempe that you must check out when thinking of moving here! Another wonderful neighborhood here in Tempe is “The Lakes.” This neighborhood has homes ranging in price from $100,000 all the way up to $1 million for a house on the lake. This neighborhood, like “Hughes Acres”, is located a stones throw away from Arizona State University. Here at “The Lakes” you will find a community clubhouse that has such amenities as tennis and volleyball courts, a pool, gym, playground and a picnic area. If you own a boat, you are more than welcome to fish right on the lake. This neighborhood is for the active because there are always events going on here like concerts, barbecues and other social events. Right next door to this neighborhood is a major shopping center which makes things very convenient if you don’t want to travel far to go to the grocery store or bank.
