According to reports from a Dallas newspaper, nearly 800 people camped at the townsite before lots in the town went up for sale. Then on March 15th, 1881 the auction of lots began. Fast forward to the year 1900 and there were around 3,400 people living here. During that decade the Board of Trade decided to change its name to the 25,000 Club. The reason for this was because Abilene hoped to reach 25,000 residents by the next census.
