Background on Port St. Lucie
Port St. Lucie, Florida is in St. Lucie County. This section of Florida is the most populated municipality in the entire country with a population of nearly 200,000. Port St. Lucie is located a little more than 125 miles Southeast of Orlando and approximately 114 miles Northwest of Miami. The city is more than 120 square miles and was incorporated back in 1961. The history of Port St. Lucie is quite interesting. In the 1950’s this area of Florida was mainly farms, businesses and a fishing camp. But then in 1958 with a $5 budget (yes, you read that right, $5) the General Development Corporation purchased 40,000 acres of land in the River Park development along the North Folk of the St. Lucie River. The first thing that was developed here was a bridge over the St. Lucie River which allowed cars direct access to Port St. Lucie. Fast forward a few years to 1961 and there were 250 homes in this new city. According to the United States Census Bureau, Port St. Lucie is a total of 76.7 square miles.
Climate in Port St. Lucie
The climate here in Port St. Lucie is what is known as a warm, humid subtropical climate. The summers here tend to be hot with daily temperatures averaging somewhere in the low 90’s. It is no surprise that the winters here are very mild and warm. During the winter months the daily average temperature is usually in the mid 70’s which makes it very comfortable during the colder months. Port St. Lucie does get a decent amount of rain though. Roughly 53 inches of rain falls here a year.
Major Roads in Port St. Lucie
There are a few major roads here in Port St. Lucie. State Road 91 which is better known as Florida’s Turnpike is the only toll road in St. Lucie County. This turnpike has two exits that fall within the Port St. Lucie city limits. They are Port St. Lucie Blvd and Becker Road. State Road 9 which is better known as Interstate 95 can be found in the Western part of the city. This road provides easy access to both Miami and Jacksonville. Finally, there is State Road 5 which is also known as U.S 1. This road runs from Key West all the way to Jacksonville and crosses over into Georgia at Folkston.
Sports in Port St. Lucie
Port St. Lucie is home to the New York Mets spring training. It is also home to the St. Lucie Mets, which is a minor league baseball team located here in Port St. Lucie There is also the Florida State League which is another minor league baseball team. Port St. Lucie is also home to the Gulf Coast League Mets which is the farm team for the New York Mets. All three teams play at First Data Field which is a stadium that holds approximately 7,100 people. The PGA Village gold complex which features 54 holes of golf can be found here in Port St. Lucie as well.
Education in Port St. Lucie
The St. Lucie County Public Schools serves the children of Port St. Lucie. Within this district there are six elementary schools, seven kindergarten through eighth grade schools which could be considered a mixture of elementary and middle (junior high) as well as three high schools. There are three colleges in the area as well. There is Barry University, Keiser University as well as Indian River State College.
Megan Fox who is best known for her roles in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Transformers is from Port St. Lucie. 80’s rapper Vanilla Ice is also from this section of Florida.
