Windermere is one of the places in the state of Florida where you can enjoy that increasingly elusive small town feel. The town is located in Orange County and is a constituent of the Orlando-Kissimmee Metropolitan Statistic Area. It covers a total area of just 1.57 square miles. The town operates a town manager/city council form of government. Five members of the council are elected for two-year tenures. Two of these run for election alongside the mayor in even years, while the remaining three run for election in odd years.
With an estimated population of 3,249 as of 2015, Windermere is a very small town. But the number of people living here has increased by more than 137 percent since 2000. It is a place for those who seek an escape from the crazy, fast life of the cities. Many of the community residents (over 90 percent) work on white-collar jobs. A significant percentage of these people work on management jobs. About 12 percent of the people work from home – that is a rather high proportion in comparison to both state and national averages.
Windermere, the median age of whose residents is about 40 years, is inhabited by many well-to-do individuals. It has a high number of slightly older people that are both well educated and wealthy. The city's per capita income stood at over $61,000 as of 2010, putting Windermere in the wealthy category in the state of Florida and entire United States. This high income is somewhat reflected in home prices in the town. Real estate here not only ranks among the most expensive in Florida, but in the whole of America. Median home cost is in the neighborhood of $400,000.
A very high premium is placed on education in Windermere. A whopping 67 percent of adults in the town are said to have at least a college degree. Some of the residents even possess doctorate degrees, showing how much value they have for education. The community is served by the Orange County Public Schools (OCPS), which also makes buses available to transport local students to and from schools. Students are typically assigned to schools in the area according to the home addresses of their parents or guardians. The student to teacher ratio in Windermere is perfect at just about 16. It is estimated that public schools in the area spend around $9,500 on each local student.
The town lies on the shortest road route linking the east and west sides of the Lake Butler chain, thanks to its location on an isthmus between several of the chain's lakes. Windermere has been working over the years to regulate traffic flow by carrying out different projects, including construction of roundabouts. These efforts have contributed to make average commute time in the town lower than the national average.
Without doubt, Windermere is an ideal town for families, especially those ones with high academic values. The community has a good educational system and high number of college-educated adults who could serve as inspiration to younger people. The town is a very safe to raise a family with one of the lowest crime rates in the entire country.
