Dunnellon is located in Marion County Florida and is part of the Ocala Metro Statistical Area. The population here is just under 2,000 and is roughly 7.4 square miles in size which means that this area of Florida is relativity small compared to surrounding cities. Dunnellon is located a little less than 80 miles North of Tampa. Dunnellon was founded all the way back in 1887. Then two years later in 1889 phosphate was discovered here which lead to an expansion which came to a halt in the early 1900’s. One of the local subdivisions here “Blue Cove” was actually one of the original mining pits more than 100 years ago. There are a few major roads here in Dunnellon that are worth mentioning. There is the main road that runs through Dunnellon which is US 41. This is a South to North highway that spans from Miami to the Michigan Upper Peninsula. Then there is County Road 40 which is a bi – county road that starts along the Gulf of Mexico in Yankeetown which is located in Levy County. Then this road merges with County Road 336 before it enters the city limits and turns North onto US 41. There is also County Road 484 with is a major county road in Southern Marion County. This road begins at the terminus of County Road 336 and its multiplex with County Road 40. All of these roads will get you where you need to go here in Dunnellon. There is also the Dunnellon/Marion County Airport that can be found along County Road 484 as well as a boat launching area along the Withlacoochee River. Dunnellon is a relatively small community and most people here can easily get around by car.

The Goethe State Forest is one of Florida’s hidden gems and is located in the Nature coast area of Central – Western Florida. If you are not up for viewing Goethe State Forest on horseback, you can do so many other things. You can hike, bike, fish, explore caves, bird watch, paddle board, swim in the nearby Gulf of Mexico and even camp. This place is an absolute must see if you live in the Dunnellon area! If you are going to do one of the guided horseback tours, just make sure that you call ahead of time to set up an appointment. Spots fill up fast but this is definitely something you should experience at least once!
