The unincorporated census-designated place (CDP) is made up of 16 neighborhoods and is considered part of the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater metropolitan area.
The history of Lutz goes back to the building of a small depot in the vicinity along the Tampa Northern Railroad. The area around the depot was named for W. P. Lutz, who was said to have contributed in ensuring that the railroad is extended to the community. The name was made official when a post office of the same name was approved by the United States Postal Service. The number of residents grew as more and more people moved there from Tampa.
A replica of the depot that led to the creation of the town can be found at the crossroads of U.S. Highway 41 and Lutz-Lake Fern Rd. The section of the community, which is referred to as the “Beautiful Downtown Lutz,” also features a public library.
The area considered as Lutz often extends beyond its immediate limits. Several zip codes extending beyond Hillsborough County to unincorporated areas in southern Pasco County are commonly considered part of the unincorporated CDP. The entire area described by the zip codes 33548, 33549, 33558 and 33554 are described as Pasco Lutz by locals.
