Jupiter is a city of over 60,000 people in Palm Beach County, Florida. It is situated about 15 miles north of West Palm Beach and has Miami further north. It forms a portion of the Miami Metropolitan Area, which had an estimated 6,012,331 million people as of 2015.
The area where the community stands was originally named after the Hobe Indian tribe who inhabited the area around the Loxahatchee River. A misunderstanding of the Spanish name “Hobe” led to it being recorded as “Jove.” Mapmakers later thought the name was the Latin term for the Roman god Jupiter, with this eventually leading to the present name of the town. Jupiter became a major location for guiding ships from mid-16th century, used by explorers for planning trips to both Central and South America.
This oceanfront community boasts a tropical savannah climate. The weather ranges from warm to hot for much of the year, with common but brief thundershowers during the hot season. Jupiter is known for its verdant landscaping around public parks and private homes. Many tropical and subtropical plants can be found here.
Jupiter has several residential neighborhoods and many condominium complexes. With scenic beaches all around, it is quite a popular destination to many people. There are numerous vacation homes in the city owned by wealthy individuals from other places like New York City and Boston. Some of these vacation home owners eventually become residents of Jupiter. Median household income and per capita income were $54,945 and $35,088 respectively in 2000.
A major landmark in the city is the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse, which was completed in 1860 and commonly used as its symbol. Since 1973, the lighthouse has been on the National Register of Historic Places.
Other places of interest in Jupiter include the National Register of Historic Places-listed DuBois Pioneer Home, Loxahatchee River Historical Museum and Palm Beach International Raceway. Both the St. Louis Cardinals and Miami Marlins have spring training facilities here, same as their Class A minor league affiliates.
